Can anyone help? I'd quite like a constant stream of Graham Norton, Loose Women and TED talks with a touch of magic fm. Can anyone recommend anything?

My dad wrote a porno made us laugh a lot on car journeys

lastqueenofscotland · 28/11/2018 20:55

I love the guardian politics one
Also athletico mince, but think that may be an acquired taste

PristineCondition · 28/11/2018 20:56

Shameless placemark

HexagonalBattenburg · 28/11/2018 21:02

Love The Allusionist but they're so damned short (I tend to fall asleep listening to podcasts most nights)
Other ones I listen to a lot (I like techie type ones as a general rule)
Darknet Diaries (kind of true crime but internet related)
Twenty Thousand Hertz
Behind the Bastards (my current one of choice)
Guardian Long Reads (this one's great falling asleep fodder for me)
Infinite Monkey Cage
No Such Thing As A Fish
Radio 4 Analysis (I dip in and out of depending on if the topic in hand interests me)
There are a few TED related ones - I think I had TED radio hour on for a while but unsubscribed to it as I'm forever tweaking what I've got on subscriptions.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 28/11/2018 21:09

I agree, the Allusionist should be an hour every 2 days Grin

dellacucina · 28/11/2018 23:38

Watching!

I listen to loads that have already been mentioned, but will add:

  • early episodes of Lexicon Valley (I hate the ones hosted by the actual academic),
  • On the Media (very US focused though)
  • ladies here might like The Longest Shortest Time, though I haven't listened in a while
  • Savage Love Blush
notacooldad · 29/11/2018 00:14

I'm listening to Distraction Pieces hosted by Scroobius Pip. He has a different guest every week and they are from varied backgrounds.

I have also subscribed to Microsearch research, The Hack ( it is an Australian spin off from Triple J) and Unsolved murders and Beyond Binary thinking.

Oooh brilliant thread placemarking

notacooldad · 29/11/2018 00:37

This has been a good thread, ive subscribed to quite a few Morecambe channels after reading this.

Those that are new to podcastsonce you have installed a platform ( I use castbox but there's plenty of others) and you are not sure where to start just search your favourite topics e.g. Current affairs, films, unexplained, true crime, psychology etc and it will come up with suggestions. You may find it is trial and error to find which channels you like.

notacooldad · 29/11/2018 00:38

Ha, I didn't know that 'Morecambe' was in my auto correct!

Gyokuro · 29/11/2018 02:39

Just got into the brilliant world of podcasts and I don't have any recommendations yet but I'm definitely watching this thread for some!

I love Fortunately with Fi and Jane, just started listening to Scummy Mummys, Dad wrote a porno and most of the R4 comedies, I loved Sarah Kendall on Flip
I just use the podcast button on my iphone /ipad is there any benefit to dowmloading a proper podcast app?

isitfridayyet1 · 29/11/2018 07:36

End of Days on the BBC sounds app is really interesting. It's about the Waco cult back in the 90s and explains how so many Britons became wrapped up in it.

TyraAllen · 29/11/2018 08:21

Wrongful Conviction - talking to people who (usually) have been released from prison after being wrongfully convicted, also to the Innocence Project staff who worked on their cases. Some of the stories are both heartbreaking and infuriating.

In The Dark - long form crime series, the first series looked at the Atlanta child murders, the second (which has just finished) looks at a a man who has been tried 6 times for the same murder in small town Mississippi.

Radio 4's The Report/File On 4/Law In Action - these are shorter, usually about 30 minutes but go into a lot more depth about stories which come up in the news - they've done investigations into abuse in care homes, academy financing, county lines drug running. Law in Action can be really good for explaining why some big legal issue happened the way it did and Joshua Rozenberg is always good to listen to.

The Tip-Off - A journalist talks to other journalists about how they reported a big story - often they are local papers so they cover things like hospital scandals and shelter funding, but Amelia Gentleman was also interviewed about the Presidents' Club report.

Yellowbutterfly1 · 29/11/2018 08:44

Are podcasts free to listen to?

BarbaraofSevillle · 29/11/2018 08:48

Yes, they're free yellow. Many have adverts in or they ask listeners to donate.

Or the ones made by the BBC are paid for out of BBC funding (you don't need a TV licence to listen to the radio and hence BBC podcasts, but BBC radio is funded by the TV licence - I think, maybe it's something to do with totally free access to information?).

wafflyversatile · 29/11/2018 09:04

Ones I haven't seen mentioned yet:

We knows parenting
Welcome to Nightvale
Futility closet
Skeptics with a k

I use stitches but it's a bit lacking for UK podcasts.
Anyone recommend one?

Destinysdaughter · 29/11/2018 09:10

My faves are

Chartmusic- hilarious podcast about Top of the Pops, featuring music journos from NME and Melody Maker ( lots of swearing! )

You must remember this podcast - the 12 episodes about Charles Manson are fascinating

Tim Ferris- American author who interviews highly successful people/entrepreneurs, very interesting.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 29/11/2018 09:14

If you want something light and fey, try The Far Meridian

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 29/11/2018 09:17

I use Castbox and under Details about each particular podcast, there is a suggestion list for further listening. I've used this a lot to expand my library.
I've now got about 50 channels bookmarked for future listening.
I tend to have about 4 channels on the go at once.
For drama, I prefer to listen to the entire series at my own pace rather than waiting for weekly episodes, so I wait until series is well underway

BuggerFlip · 29/11/2018 09:26

Some great suggestions there. I've only just started listening to podcasts and so far it's just been Simon Mayo Confessions and Adam Buxton which are both great. There are so many that in the back catalog that I can't see me finishing them but I've just subscribed to quite a few more now. Adam Buxton is brilliant though and just my level of humour!

OhioOhioOhio · 29/11/2018 09:38

This is great. Thank you.
