Can anyone help? I'd quite like a constant stream of Graham Norton, Loose Women and TED talks with a touch of magic fm. Can anyone recommend anything?

I came on to say you must remember this. The Manson one were very in depth, also the "dead blondes" series is intriguing and sad, especially the Barbara Payton one, that stayed with me.

Kaz2200 · 29/11/2018 09:53

Hi can I ask you experts, are podcasts downloaded? Can I listen off line? Totally new to podcasting, is it simply anything that is pre recorded such as books music and programs.

pooemoji · 29/11/2018 09:56

If you like true crime/serial killer stories and don't mind a bit of smut/swearing/bumsex chat...def try All Killa No Filla

Kaz

Yes, they're downloaded. I use the Antennapod app although there are probably loads available. I think I tried a few and stuck with this one because it worked for me.

I subscribe to my podcasts and app is set to check for new episodes once per day when my phone is connected to wifi.

Currently it seems that I have to tell it to download, although it should happen automatically - I probably have to look at the settings again, but I’m in a fairly good routine of just going into the app every couple of days at home to check things are downloading – I have some podcasts where I don’t download every episode because otherwise I just won’t get through them all.

So I end up with a list of podcasts , which I listen to in the car – my phone plays through my car stereo using Bluetooth. Once a podcast has played, it automatically deletes.

I travel round for work as well as commute for about 1 hour round trip each day I’m in the office so I get a good few hours of time in the car each week to listen to my podcasts.

I am place marking as I dont have time to read the thread right now.
I love a good podcast.

ChaircatMiaow · 29/11/2018 10:24

West Cork - a true crime podcast based on a murder that happened in Ireland over 20 years ago.

I started listening to it with a firm opinion in one respect, and now I’m not so sure...

S-town
Serial (but not loving latest series)
Dr death
Sword and scale (omg I love it!)
Terrible, thanks for asking
The archers Blush
Casefile
Up and Vanished (but again, not loving the latest series)
Finding Cleo
Swindled (this is brilliant!! Each episode on a different conman. Presented in a very deadpan way similar to casefile and very cleverly done, by an Aus)
They walk among us
Young Charlie

Kaz2200 · 29/11/2018 11:02

Thanks so much Barbar I think there is so much content it is hard to no where to start, I'm not really into true crime, I'm more into discussions, I like Jeremy Vine on radio 2.

CheddarIsNotTheOnlyCheese · 29/11/2018 12:48

I've just started listening to podcasts. I listen to books on Audible and they have a huge selection of podcasts that they recommend you listen to while waiting for your next credit to drop. I randomly picked Ricky Gervais. I've woken dh up just by shaking with laughter. Karl Pilkingtons comments, ideas and theories are sublime.

PiperPublickOccurrences · 29/11/2018 12:52

There's also a really good Radio 4 one about Irish mother and baby homes - think it's called "The Home Babies".

WellGoshDarnIt · 29/11/2018 13:39

If you can identify with tales of social awkwardness and mortifying situations, Adrift with Geoff Lloyd and Annabel Port is a good fun listen. Often has guest comedians on too.

I mentioned in an earlier post to think about things that you are interested in such as politics, current affairs, health, film, science, philosophy, travel, whatever and put a general search out under a topic. The podcast platform will come up with suggestions for you.

ApocalypseNowt · 30/11/2018 17:20

Can I just warn you off Sword and Scale. The hose (Mike Boudet) is a weapons grade tool. He asks for nude pictures from young female fans, has said some dodgy stuff about people with disabilities/mental health issues and uses loads of 999 (or rather 911) calls in his episodes (and acted like a twat when someone from one of those calls asked him not to).

There are lots more true crime podcasts that I honestly think are better anyway!

dellacucina · 30/11/2018 17:25

I actually agree on Sword and Scale. It's also basically a conspiracy theory distribution centre.

PiperPublickOccurrences · 30/11/2018 17:41

Once you start listening though you'll get a clearer idea of what you like, and what you don't. If you're already a Radio 4 listener, then do a search for their podcasts as a starting point. Or look for a podcast by a journalist you like reading or someone you like seeing on telly. I personally don't enjoy the "mates having a laugh in the studio, chatty and jokey" style of podcasts. I'm not interested in sport, or film, or hearing about what fantastic parents other people are. Not my thing. I much prefer the journalistic, "spoken newspaper" style of podcast on news-y, politics or social issues.

missionofmercy · 30/11/2018 18:04

Everyone has different tastes and interests, but sometimes we all like similar things on podcasts!

Here is my library. I just use the podcast app supplied with IOS phone. Has a timer and switches off if I fall asleep. Brilliant.

Beautiful Anonymous (weird but true stories, often bizarre, but very entertaining)
Casefile, we all know about this. Excellent.
Court Junkie, US based true crime stories. I really like the narrator and the cases.
Dan Snow's History Hit. Self explanatory
Dirty John
Desert Island Discs
Great Lives
From our own correspondent. So interesting.
IPM. Really like this, stories from real people about events in their lives.
The Guilty Feminist
They walk among us (UK true crime)
Travel with Rick Steves..... now this is armchair travelling and I really like it.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 30/11/2018 19:39

Thanks everyone, I've subscribed to some corkers on the back of this thread!

wafflyversatile · 30/11/2018 23:33

Ftr i really like the latest serial. Fascinating if depressing look at the injustice of the justice system day in day out. I'm not sure what is objectionable about it.

BarbaraofSevillle · 01/12/2018 05:04

I agree about the latest series of serial. A big fat wake up call for anyone under the illusion that the US is a civilised first world country Sad.

On a lighter note, I particularly enjoyed a recent episode of Fortunately, where Fi and Jane talked to Esther Rantzen. Good conversation plus coverage of all the worthwhile charity work Esther has done - primarily childline, and now she is working with a charity helping to overcome loneliness and isolation in older people.

stopitandtidyupp · 01/12/2018 06:49

Another vote for serial and S town.

TheCag · 01/12/2018 06:54

For anyone who likes Casefile, I highly recommend Redhanded. The presenters are great.

JM1967 · 01/12/2018 08:11

If you love true crime you might enjoy Crime Writers On.....they discuss and review the various true crime podcasts. I love hearing their perspectives and great way to find other true crime podcasts.

Destinysdaughter · 03/12/2018 07:22

Oprah Winfrey does a series of podcasts where she interviews people, she’s recently done one with Michelle Obama, talking about her new book, fascinating!

PiperPublickOccurrences · 03/12/2018 08:42

I really struggled with the last season of Serial. Not sure what it was. I felt it jumped around quite a lot and wasn't as relate-able as the other two seasons. I'm also not as keen on the presenter's style - she tries to be jokey and informal but it's all obviously scripted so just doesn't work as well. Really noticeable when it was the English guy talking - exactly the same narration style.

Kaz2200 · 03/12/2018 16:05

Do all the podcast apps have the same content, I have cast box and cast addict, but nether recognise opray Winfrey when I search.
