Gogglebox, the family who wear their shoes indoors

I like this family but I can’t help but wince when I see a plate full of biscuits on their foot rest surrounded by feet encased in trainers.

AIBU to think they should TAKE THEM OFF!

Sorry.

If there was no food on the foot rest I don’t think I’d mind so much but it’s just like allowing your shoe covered feet onto the kitchen table in my mind. Sorry!

GabsAlot · 20/11/2018 23:11

i actgually hate seeing bare feet up on sofas leering towards me freaks me out

DrWhy · 20/11/2018 23:12

The dog owners I know are all shoes on household, we are a shoes off household and yes, people generally take their shoes off - I’ve never actually had to ask anyone. Usually people, including the health visitor who was here today seem to take their cue from the line up of shoes by the door and the fact that I’m wearing socks and automatically remove them. We have a neighbour who really doesn’t like to be in ‘stockinged feet’ as someone put it so when she comes to babysit she brings her ‘indoor shoes’ with her!

RockYourSocksOff · 20/11/2018 23:12

The dogs mouth is probably more hygienic than the shoe treads.

Whether they’re indoor shoes or not, take them off around food, please!

I've just looked it up & I think the dog was called Frank & died in May! Not Dave, unless that's another one!

hamblehumpty · 20/11/2018 23:14

Yak - wearing outdoor shoes indoors is so unhygienic - you're bringing any amount of faeces, sick, spit etc from the street indoors onto your carpets - wood floors not so much albeit I have wood floors all through downstairs precisely for this reason and hoover/mop daily.

I ask people to take their shoes off if they're so rude not to - never had a problem.

RockYourSocksOff · 20/11/2018 23:14

Even my dc’s 11 yo friends take their shoes off at the door!

I wear my shoes indoors so that doesn't bother me but the proportions in that room always look off to me. Tiny room, massive sofas, massive dogs, medium to large humans, and a big plate of 10 untouched fondant fancies.

Celebelly · 20/11/2018 23:16

Ah it was Frank who died, Dave is still around!

Ooplesandbanoonoos · 20/11/2018 23:16

I have spent years trying to get DH to take shoes off indoors. He wears them till bedtime. Am getting annoyed just writing this Angry

GabsAlot · 20/11/2018 23:20

dave is still with us

vinegarqueen · 20/11/2018 23:22

@cherrypavlova I want your lifestyle. Ceramic tiled house, dogs, and wood fires? Bliss.

I think shoes on next to a plate of food might be a bit offputting for me if I was personally there and expected to eat it, but they are all family and it's a programme about being in your own home, so I guess they want to be comfortable watching all the tv.

RockYourSocksOff · 20/11/2018 23:22

I’m glad Dave is still with us Smile

I guess I’m imagining myself on this programme with my boot clad size 6 work shoes, surrounding the temptating nibbles which is being aired to the nation. Yuk!

YANBU. Wearing shoes in the house is rank.

CherryPavlova · 20/11/2018 23:40

No, not ceramic everywhere only kitchen, downstairs lavatories, rear porch and utility. It’s old, odd coloured and laid directly on earth. It’s cold underfoot. Rest of downstairscis either ancient wobble parquet or modern oak. Sounds nice but keeping warm is a serious effort. Only one dog but he’s big and energetic so in and out like a yo yo.
Woodburners are lovely but hauling logs in from the top of the garden in the pouring rain isn’t quite so romantic.

We put food on a table not next to our feet.

NaiceShoes · 20/11/2018 23:41

My 16 yo son's friends come round and take their shoes off without being asked. I mentioned to him that I was impressed that they did and he replied: "we all come from nice houses so of course we take our shoes off!"

Why would you want to tread poo, sick, spit etc into your carpets? Fair enough if you have hard floors that you're happy to clean daily.

GabsAlot · 20/11/2018 23:43

if my dh takes his shoes off u better run for cover-id advise against it

LadyPamplemousse · 20/11/2018 23:45

I've seen these shoe threads before and find them fascinating. I am yet to set foot inside a house where the default is to take off one's shoes. And I have been in many a nice house.

SuperMumTum · 20/11/2018 23:45

Taking shoes off indoors is a relatively recent phenomenon. Most people of a certain age wouldn't dream of taking their shoes off when visiting someone else, and would feel uncomfortable if asked to, but would probably wear slippers for comfort at home. I think it's a class thing as well, the middle and upper classes would traditionally keep their shoes on until bedtime.
I always take mine off as I find it much more comfortable and I encourage my kids to do the same but I don't expect my parents or my grandmother to remove their shoes when they visit (or anyone else unless they turned up in wellies).

BlancheM · 20/11/2018 23:54

I've never known anyone leave their shoes on indoors, at my house or their own. It's a dirty habit and thankfully not one I've encountered. The indoors would just be an extension of outdoors and we all know how filthy the streets are!

It certainly isn't in my experience - we as children were brought up to take shoes off as soon as we went to someone's house - just part of good manners such as saying please and thankyou etc - I find it bizarre that so many don't take shoes off indoors - you're literally bringing the crap, vomit and germs into your home - bleuggh!

Charolais · 20/11/2018 23:55

I would never dream of asking someone to remove their shoes when entering our home. That is extremely rude. We have older friends and relatives and the thought of them struggling to remove their shoes and walking bare foot it just awful.

I have to have help putting my shoes on and removing them because of serious health issues. If someone asked me to remove my shoes I would not enter their home.

You eat from plates and use utensils, not the floor. I bet the same people demanding people to be barefooted in their homes are also the ones who wash and rinse their dishes in the same dirty water. UCK!

LadyPamplemousse · 20/11/2018 23:55

Calm down dears.
