Gogglebox, the family who wear their shoes indoors

I like this family but I can’t help but wince when I see a plate full of biscuits on their foot rest surrounded by feet encased in trainers.

AIBU to think they should TAKE THEM OFF!

Sorry.

I always notice the plates of treats but never spotted the shoes but then I am from a family who never take their shoes off indoors. I thought it was a newish thing. I don’t ever remember having to take my shoes off when visiting friends or family when I was a child or teenager.

TheSquashyHatOfMrGnosspelius · 21/11/2018 07:48

You take your shoes off because people spit in the street. Dogs shit too but human spit is my reason : (

Gwenhwyfar · 21/11/2018 07:51

I tend to take shoes off indoors these days, but if I was on telly I'd probably keep them on.

Gwenhwyfar · 21/11/2018 07:53

"I thought it was a newish thing. I don’t ever remember having to take my shoes off when visiting friends or family when I was a child or teenager."

It is. Definitely wasn't so usual in the 80s and was considered a 'posh' thing where I lived.

treaclesoda · 21/11/2018 07:55

I had one friend at primary school (mid 80s) whose parents insisted on everyone taking their shoes off in their 'good room'. Everyone was dying to be invited to her birthday party because it felt so naughty and exciting to be allowed to take your shoes off in someone else's house.

Gwenhwyfar · 21/11/2018 07:59

Treacle - I had one as well, but one of her parents was of Nordic origin and they gave you clogs to wear instead.
At my grandparents' I wasn't allowed to take my shoes off.

dontalltalkatonce · 21/11/2018 08:00

It's their bloody house! YABU. Turn it off if you don't like it.

MaisyPops · 21/11/2018 08:04

I've never noticed on gogglebox.
But I do notice when my relatives insist on wearing their shoes inside our house because they are shoes on indoors people. (And then they complain to me about marks on their carpets... Confused but that's another issue Smile)

recraft · 21/11/2018 08:28

Due to dodgy hearing I always have the subtitles on, hides their feet nicely. I should think the Malone's house is 'lived in', I bet Dave and co. don't wipe their feet when they come in. I like Mrs Malone, she has such a nice face.

dontyouforgetaboutme · 21/11/2018 08:42

Wearing shoes in your home is perfectly normal ffs. You ABVU to suggest otherwise. And the fact it grosses you out implies you have a problem. Sorry!

theymademejoin · 21/11/2018 08:55

@Rachelover40 - No-one wears shoes indoors, they either have their slippers or just socks.

You obviously suffer from selective reading, given the number of posters on this thread who have said they wear shoes indoors.

Like some others, I was brought up to believe that it was rude to take your shoes off in someone else's house. If someone asked me to, I would but I would think they were rude for asking. Equally, if someone rocked up to my house and removed their shoes, I wouldn't say anything but I would think they were rude as shoes off is very familiar to my mind and unless I know you very well, being that familiar in my house is rude.

Other than kids, nobody outside family has ever taken their shoes off when coming into my house. It's definitely not the norm where I live.

I've been asked to take off my shoes once, ever. It was when I was looking for university accommodation with my son (lodging in someone's house). This particular landlady seemed a bit insane for a multitude of reasons but this just added to the general batshitedness of her set-up.

That said, I do recognise that people are different and that other people have different opinions to me.

outdoor shoes indoors are grim, but shoes on furniture next to food - yuck! its a bit lune putting the cat’s litterbox directly next to your food...

While I don't have much of an opinion on the show, as I object to the premise of watching people watch TV, I think YABU regarding shoes in the house.

I think the key issue is dogs. When you think about it, dog paws go outside. They walk through all the dog pee etc, a lot of them pee on their own feet at some point. Very little difference between them and shoes. And if you have ever had a ten stone mastiff step on your bare feet, you'll know why we keep our shoes on!

Also regarding your comment about dogs mouths being cleaner than shoes, I'm not sure I agree. My late dog used to lick its penis and backside fairly thoroughly! I believe this is quite common dog behaviour.

Can't comment on the biscuits, but a PP said they're not eaten and are only there for show. Is it possible this is the case?

OutPinked · 21/11/2018 09:03

Many families no longer have carpets so shoes indoors really isn’t a big deal. We are a shoes off family despite wood flooring throughout but that’s personal preference (mostly cause I cba mopping every day Grin).

Asthenia · 21/11/2018 09:05

I think it’s strange asking people to remove shoes etc but I always ask when I go to people’s houses. Also how can you be properly comfortable and cosy with shoes on?! Can’t snuggle up on the sofa!

RockYourSocksOff · 21/11/2018 09:06

For those asking me to simply turn the tv off, why? It’s an observation.

The point I was making was not wearing shoes indoors as such but propping your shoe clad feet next to the treat tray on national tv.

I hate shoes on indoors for the germ factor. I think you're either a germaphobe or not. I know some people find it very unwelcoming being asked to take their shoes off but I feel so agitated when people don't- and it is my house! Shoes next to biscuits is grim! Blush

LaurieMarlow · 21/11/2018 09:17

I've no idea who this family are, but delighted to see yet another shoes on/off thread on AIBU.

Previous threads have established that shoes off is predominately lower middle class and seems to be more common in certain regions.

The debate around whether it's more rude to ask guests to take them off or leave them on will continue til the end of time.

Drivemecrazy1974 · 21/11/2018 09:19

I totally agree with you, OP. I love this family, they make me laugh - a lot. Especially the dad! However, the feet by the biscuits/cakes makes me want to throw something at the screen - it really winds me up!

xJessica · 21/11/2018 09:19

We are a no shoes household and it's not that recent because we were brought up o take our shoes off at the door, although my mum is from Poland where they always took their shoes off as long as she can remember, even strangers to the house removed their shoes.

The thought of wearing shoes in the house turns my stomach. Think of all the urine, vomit, faeces remnants and god knows what else on the pavements. I read an article about it the other day about how much bacteria is brought onto carpets from shoes. I like my DD to be able to play on the floor and know it's clean. I've never ever asked anyone to take their shoes off but everyone somehow just does it. I don't know if it's because we don't have ours on or if it's the shoe rack at the front door. A lot of my friends don't wear theirs in the house anyway.

ProfessorMoody · 21/11/2018 09:30

Yuck. The thought of shoes on bedroom carpets, furniture etc is just bogging. If someone has a problem with removing their shoes in my house, they can leave.

IrmaFayLear · 21/11/2018 09:35

It's an odd one, shoes. Because I would never, ever wear my shoes once past the hall, yet I wouldn't dream of asking a guest to remove their shoes.

I love the Malones, and I covet Dave the Dog!

MyBrexitIsIll · 21/11/2018 09:37

I’m amazed at how anal people can be so anal about shoes but have no issues with a dog or a cat coming in, sitting on their sofa, roam around the house or even go in their bed.

Because let’s be honest, when it comes to germs and poo etc... where is the difference?

LuvSmallDogs · 21/11/2018 09:40

Make me remove my shoes at your peril, if I have one of my Atheletes Foot infections you will soon regret it! Or your guest may have an infected ingrown toenail (never had one myself, but the smell is eye watering).

All I can see is those Keeping Up Appearances bits where the poor workmen run out the house from the barking mad snob and try to put their shoes back on without stopping to sit.Grin
