I like this family but I can’t help but wince when I see a plate full of biscuits on their foot rest surrounded by feet encased in trainers.

AIBU to think they should TAKE THEM OFF!

Sorry.

faff I completely agree with you! So many people are dismissing the fact that it’s more of a cultural thing than a class thing.

I lived in Canada for 12 years (only just returned to the UK last year age 22). It is definitely the custom there to take your shoes off. Even professionals (estate agents, financial advisors) took off their shoes when entering our home! I actually had no idea it was (mostly) normal to leave them on in the UK. I still think it’s ruder to tramp into someone else’s house with your shoes on than to apologetically ask guests to take them off. The exception being if you were having a party and people got dressed up. That’s just my opinion, anyway! Smile

Cor blimey guvnor! I am not remotely upper class and am white British like the Malones (and their mega dogs), about whom this thread was started. We keep our shoes on! We are common. My feet get unbearably hot in slippers and my shoes stay on instead. Some of my friends want shoes off in their houses. Why not? Their homes not mine. Not a problem, not rude, not offensive and class doesn't enter into it.

JamesBlonde1 · 29/11/2018 18:26

Not RTFT. I reckon those dogs make a right mess trailing mud and God knows what in, and all the slavering so they won’t care what they walk in from the street either.

We’re a shoes off house. I’m sure the dogs are very pleasant though. They like the look of all the cakes and treats.

" I actually had no idea it was (mostly) normal to leave them on in the UK. "

In my experience it isn't. The only households where shoes are kept on are not the cleanest.

theymademejoin · 29/11/2018 19:08

@yolofish - so come to my house, keep your shoes on or take them off, either way that's absolutely fine - please just come in and be happy here.

That's the perfect middle ground, as opposed to @FloralTeacup 's "middle ground" of Just take off your flipping shoes and get comfy. Seems so silly to keep them on.

I don't want to take my shoes off in your house. My feet get cold easily. I also prefer to have support as I have dodgy knees.

I sometimes take them off in mine, I sometimes don't. Obviously, if I put my feet on the couch, I'll take them off. Generally though, I am more comfy with shoes on that off.

My house is perfectly clean, thank you very much.

LoniceraJaponica · 29/11/2018 19:12

Sorry. I should have added that in the shoes on houses that I have visited

FloralTeacup · 29/11/2018 19:54

@lonicerajaponica
The main experience I have of a “shoes on” household is my partner’s parents. All I can say is I have no idea what colour the carpets actually are...
I find it so bizarre. Shoes are made for outside. Why wear them inside?! Fine if you need them for foot issues/knee issues. But they make special slipper-like shoes for that?

greatauntpearl · 29/11/2018 19:58

Can I ask where do you put your handbag when you get home?

LoniceraJaponica · 29/11/2018 20:04

On the floor

straightjeans · 29/11/2018 20:05

It's disgusting. You step in spit, piss and whatever else out there and then come home and trample it into your carpet and rugs.

littlemeitslyn · 29/11/2018 20:09

I wear shoes indoors

anitagreen · 29/11/2018 20:31

I don't get why anyone would wear outdoor shoes at home on your carpets? I also don't put my handbag down on any surfaces either. It's not that I'm obsessed with germs but I've trod in vomit before and couldn't imagine just walking through my house treading that in .
It reminds me of being a kid when we'd step in dog shit and run it through the house without realising only for my dm to go mad Blush

longwayoff · 29/11/2018 21:34

For crying out loud. Boot scrapers. Doormats. Obviously if trodden in noticeable filth we take our shoes off.

anitagreen · 30/11/2018 11:28

Okay if nothing noticeable you've trodden in, but what about all the other muck you walk in daily, the pavements etc it's full of germs

FloralTeacup · 30/11/2018 12:31

@anitagreen Exactly this! I always thought a doormat was to get rid of excess dirt before stepping in the house... then you take off your shoes.
