Potty training 2.5 yr old Dd. I hate the word ‘panties’ but ‘knickers’ seems age-inappropriate and ‘underwear’ too generic. Are there any better words out there?

Boys- boxers
Girls- Knickers or pants

iIcouldsleepforaweek · 19/11/2018 21:31

Pants for both boys and girls

LittleAlbatross · 19/11/2018 21:31

I'm in West Cumbria and lots of locals here call trousers etc "pants." I think it's because a lot of American trade came through here at one point.

I call underwear pants but my 3 year old DD has decided that my childminder, a West Cumbrian, is clearly the more authoritative on the matter as DD insists that I call them knickers Grin

DorothyLNaySayers · 19/11/2018 21:31

I AM NOT AMERICAN! I’m Irish. We used to say panties and front bottom in my house when I was small and there was absolutely never anything pornographic about either. Overly twee, maybe, but definitely not pornographic! Shock

@twentytimes, I just looked at the M&S website, and they use "knickers" for girls underwear.

I am a little bit concerned that this thread is taking a slightly creepy turn.

MrsLJ2014 · 19/11/2018 21:32

Blondielongie Here too!

MinnieMannie · 19/11/2018 21:32

Twenty -I think "knickers" is a lot more mainstream than that, it really eg Don't get your knickers in a twist

Bigonesmallone3 · 19/11/2018 21:32

I grew up with them being called knickers and will do the same when DD is old enough to potty train
DS wore pants..

Cachailleacha · 19/11/2018 21:32

Knickers for girls and women, undies for everyone. I tend to use undies, or sometimes, more specific, boxers for my DS.

Limensoda · 19/11/2018 21:34

It was always knickers when I was growing up. We had to do PE at primary school in our knickers and vests.
Pants were mens/boys trousers.

mummagirl · 19/11/2018 21:34

Knick-knack paddywacks

dementedpixie · 19/11/2018 21:35

Pants for the girls, boxers for the boys in this house

dinosaurglitterrepublic · 19/11/2018 21:35

Never crossed my mind to refer to them as anything other than knickers. Pants for little boys. Completely uncontroversial IMO. Many retailers do refer to underwear for little girls and boys as knickers and pants (yes I checked after the poster said they are just labeled as underwear as I thought that was odd).

jarhead123 · 19/11/2018 21:35

Knickers or pants.

Essexgirlupnorth · 19/11/2018 21:35

Knickers

Pinkyyy · 19/11/2018 21:35

If you use pants as outerwear, why not just call them underpants?

redandwhite1 · 19/11/2018 21:36

Panties is horrific!! Old fashioned but also a bit....sexual?

I have a boy so it's just pants

EmeraldShamrock · 19/11/2018 21:36

Pants for boy and girl at that age, Now it is knickers though we say ninnys, and boxers.

FoxBoxRox · 19/11/2018 21:37

Pants are outerwear to me. Like school trousers/on bottoms. "Put your pants on"

llangennith · 19/11/2018 21:37

Girls wear knickers
Boys wear pants (or boxers)
No items of children's underwear should ever be referred to as panties.

Lovingbenidorm · 19/11/2018 21:38

Are we having a Transatlantic discussion here? ‘Pants’ are not outerwear............that’s where Superman went wrong

toomuchtooold · 19/11/2018 21:40

Pants. If for no other reason than to ensure that your kids get to piss themselves laughing at US TV.

cariadlet · 19/11/2018 21:40

I've always said knickers for girls and pants for boys.

Totally agree that "panties" is yucky.

joinedjustfordw · 19/11/2018 21:40

Knick-knocks! sunshineandflowers21

redandwhite1 · 19/11/2018 21:41
