What do you call your child’s underwear?

Potty training 2.5 yr old Dd. I hate the word ‘panties’ but ‘knickers’ seems age-inappropriate and ‘underwear’ too generic. Are there any better words out there?

Pants.

Everyone in our house has pants.

Yes cringe at panties.

knickers, knick-knacks, pants, undies, bloomers (that one always makes her laugh and point out that her bum is too small for bloomers but mine is huge - she is 7 and horribly honest!)

I like to use lots of words for things - good for her vocab.

However, in some parts of the country this means trousers. My mother says pants for trousers.

I don't think knickers is inappropriate! My sister says knick-nicks.

So today I have looked up the etymology of both panties (diminutive for pantaloons) and knickers (derived from knickerbockers). What an odd day.

I just called the knickers as that's what they are.

The same when she asks about body parts.

I can't stand people that use silly words for body parts and clothes.

Well, they’re only knickers if you call them knickers. It’s not like there’s some scientific internationally-agreed definition of knickers, like there is for planets. For people that call them other things, then they are those other things.

Pants for boys, knickers for girls. My two boys think it's hilarious when we call pants Pantaloons or Pantaloonies x

I'm Irish and a lot of people here would call trousers Pants.
We would say knickers or panties.

In this house:

Pants = underwear, male and female

Knickers = female underwear, though I don't use this word often I think it's acceptable?

Trousers = clothing worn over your pants, that covers your legs. Various subcategories of trousers if I need to be more specific, ie jeans, leggings, school trousers...

We used to take the piss out of my American ex for using 'pants' to mean trousers.

My nearly three year old refers to them as a swimming costume but that is because I got the sign wrong when we were first teaching him words 🤦🏻‍♀️

We tend to call them pants in our house though, however pants has also become the word to just encompass all kinds of bottom wear.
