Butter on bread?

1400spincycle · 10/11/2018 15:35

A light hearted one to solve a long running silly dispute between me and DP.

I like buttered bread. So do the kids. I butter toast, toasted teacakes, use it in sandwiches etc. DH maintains that this habit is disgusting, revolting and a strange abberation. He claims that lots of people hate butter with a passion and that I am the unusual person. (I am struggling to think of a single other person who feels as strongly on this topic)

So Mumsenet. What the verdict?

In my 37.6yrs I've only met ONE PERSON who doesn't butter their bread/toast etc and eats it dry.

So to all those asking who doesn't eat butter? MY DAD (the weirdo) that's who Grin

clary · 11/11/2018 22:56

My DD won't eat butter. She can be a bit odd (eats food in a certain order and also doesn't like cake!!) so I just take it as more for the rest of us.

Only real butter tho. I buy organic from Morrisons. Actual butter (as opposed to yucky marg) is increasingly rare in supermarkets. If you are offering me marg (or fake buttery spread) I'll pass, thanks.

As Sheldon says, "I have no difficulty believing you are not butter!"

Clearthinking · 11/11/2018 22:59

Might be the only one that hates it... :-/

peachgreen · 11/11/2018 23:01

Butter with jam on bread makes me want to boak - even thinking about it. But I love it on toast!

BigDamnHero · 11/11/2018 23:08

Mmmmm...butter.......................

Sorry, what was the question, again?

iLoveFoood · 11/11/2018 23:17

Wtf butter is like a ritual in Ireland. Real butter on bread, toast, scone, potatoes mashed with butter, veg with butter, mmmmm!!

socksortights · 11/11/2018 23:17

I hate butter and margarine. You will see me in the coop studying all the premade sandwiches to see which ones have no butter in and worthy of a consideration to buy.

Subway sandwiches don't have butter in.

I agree with your DP it is disgusting.

whatwillbewillbe03 · 11/11/2018 23:28

Butter on fresh bread is an absolute must (tiger/giraffe bread).. as is with cheese and onion crisp sandwiches and oven baked bacon sandwich on white fresh bread.

I only know one person who does not butter sandwiches and I find it weird!

What butter do you all buy?

CandyCreeper · 11/11/2018 23:30

my son hates butter. wont have it on anything. he is 6.

Shodan · 12/11/2018 00:23

Ds1 (22) loathes butter. He hates it so much that he had me add the butter to the cake he was making for his colleagues.
He has his toast dry with a large splodge of marmite in the middle of the slice and claims it is delicious Confused

I honestly can't remember any occasion in his childhood that might account for it, but he has always been a picky eater generally...

DaysOfCurlySpencer · 12/11/2018 00:32

I like butter, the good stuff, somehow a lot of it is not so nice any more.

I use a lot less these days for various reasons but will not buy spread as it now contains palm oil (read the ingredients list on that 'healthy' olive spread).

MarcieBluebell · 12/11/2018 01:00

I had to live without a fridge for six months and stopped buying butter and milk. A year on I still don't but it.

I have dry toast and sandwiches. I eat cereal with water. I'd find it weird now but not like your dh as I know it's not the norm.

Sweetpea55 · 12/11/2018 02:40

I have never been able to eat butter on bread but love it on toast teacakes crumpets etc,

MorningsEleven · 12/11/2018 03:17

The only way to make shreddies edible is to butter them. It's miraculous.

Highlandgimmer · 12/11/2018 03:22

The only way to make shreddies edible is to butter them. It's miraculous.

Confused I thought I loved all things buttered but this feels a step too far! How does thing work? Do you butter then pour milk on or just dry shreddies with butter?

MorningsEleven · 12/11/2018 03:34

Imagine you wanted a snack of cheese and crackers but you'd no cheese or crackers. No need to feel disappointed, you can have a plate of shreddies spread with butter.

LesLavandes · 12/11/2018 03:36

Butter on toast..... yum yum

sisterfrancesbeaverhausen · 12/11/2018 04:39

Tell him to have a Biscuit A dry one.

sisterfrancesbeaverhausen · 12/11/2018 04:40

*My last post was a pile of ungrammatical shite

but at least I don't chew on DRY BREAD*

😂😂

someoneseatenmyapple · 12/11/2018 04:43

DH won't eat butter and will do all he can to avoid it. He wouldn't buy a pre packed sandwich because of the butter in it.

He has peanut butter on his toast and replaces butter in sandwiches with something like pickle or salad cream.

I've tried to convert him but he won't have any of it!

Alfie190 · 12/11/2018 04:58

Buttering toast is not a habit. It is perfectly normal and your DH is just weird. 🙂

violetbunny · 12/11/2018 06:49

I hate butter, it ruins a perfectly good sandwich. I wouldn't even contemplate putting it on toast!

Taffeta · 12/11/2018 06:54

Olive spreads etc IMO are repulsive - full of rubbish

MARGARINE ON A BAKED POTATO????? Jesus wept

Salted yellow farmhouse butter - utter heaven

I’d be very suspicious of anyone not liking butter, in the same vein as people not liking animals Grin

altiara · 12/11/2018 07:47

I don’t like butter on bread BUT I like it on hot toast/crumpets/potatoes. Anything where it melts.
But I know I am unusual unlike your DH!
