Butter on bread?

1400spincycle · 10/11/2018 15:35

A light hearted one to solve a long running silly dispute between me and DP.

I like buttered bread. So do the kids. I butter toast, toasted teacakes, use it in sandwiches etc. DH maintains that this habit is disgusting, revolting and a strange abberation. He claims that lots of people hate butter with a passion and that I am the unusual person. (I am struggling to think of a single other person who feels as strongly on this topic)

So Mumsenet. What the verdict?

They are Take. They are the perfect delivery method. Thick and porous enough to allow maximum butter soaking.

Off to toast a crumpet now and slather it in butter

Sparrowlegs248 · 10/11/2018 15:51

He's odd. I only have a small spread on a sandwich, but lashings on anything else.

LaBelleSauvage · 10/11/2018 15:51

LTB

Butter is the best

VelociraptorRex · 10/11/2018 15:54

Whaaat?? LTB, how does he enjoy a bacon sarnie when the bacon is so hot it melts he butter on the bread? Or crumpets that drop butter? What a strange man Confused

chickenfeathers · 10/11/2018 15:54

Butter on everything!

Divorce your DH - he is definitely BU! 😁

BorisAndDoris · 10/11/2018 15:54

I used to go out with someone who didn't like butter or margarine on bread.

Weirdo.

He also had to have separate teaspoons for making tea and coffee.

shockedballoon · 10/11/2018 15:54

I flippin love butter - DH also a big fan. We have a degree of butter on toast that is beyond what would generally be accepted as a lot. It's not our standard go to amount, however on occasion one of us will demand 'a sarcastic amount of butter please'.

Ecofluffynanny · 10/11/2018 15:55

Butter is my raison d'être...your OH is bonkers 😲

Knittedfairies · 10/11/2018 15:55

He’s just wrong.... more for you though.

Ecofluffynanny · 10/11/2018 15:58

@BorisAndDoris I can taste (and therefore can't drink) the coffee in my cup of tea if someone has stirred coffee first 🤢. Not so the other way round though strangely...so if you're only using one spoon, stir the tea first 🤷‍♀️😉

MonoClue · 10/11/2018 15:58

You are right, he is all shades of wrong.
For me bread is something to put the butter on.
Ex MIL (maysherestinpeace) always called it "best butter"

bofsy1 · 10/11/2018 15:59

REAL butter on toast is food of the gods.

Have to admit that when making sandwiches I butter one slice and mayo the other. Works for most fillings apart from a cheese and onion crisp butty that MUST be buttered both sides, the crisps crushed to crumb topped with sharp mature cheddar.

Says she, rooting in the fridge and cupboard now. Have the goo on me, thanks OP!!

EustaciaPieface · 10/11/2018 15:59

I don’t like butter on bread, tea cakes etc. I know that this is highly unusual and all my friends and family tell me I’m a weirdo and I’m happy to admit I am! Your husband is definitly in the minority.

Lolololololol · 10/11/2018 16:00

What does he put on crumpets? If you bite into a crumpet and the butter doesn't run down your chin then you are doing it wrong.... 😂

BorisAndDoris · 10/11/2018 16:01

My 11yo is a butter snob. We only eat real butter in this house and once she was visiting her aunt eating a sandwich when she turned to me and whispered, "Mum, I think something's gone off. This sandwich tastes horrible"

I had to explain what margarine was. Now she asks for sandwiches with no margarine or 'spread' when ordering in cafes and bakeries. She'd rather have a dry sandwich than one with margarine.

Biancadelriosback · 10/11/2018 16:01

My Grandad-in-law used to always butter both sides of his toast. He was alive during the war when he had to live on rations so the height of luxury for him was double buttered bread/toast.

zukiecat · 10/11/2018 16:02

I hate, loathe and detest butter!

I cannot stand the stuff, horrible, horrible

I hate most dairy products, I also hate milk and cream

Beats me how anyone can touch the stuff

belleface · 10/11/2018 16:02

I don't like butter (or most spreadable things actually) but I'm definitely very much in a minority amongst the people I know!

RockinHippy · 10/11/2018 16:02

WTAF. Your DH is a heathen, plus he's ignorant as butter has been proven to not be the evil earlier believed. It doesn't affect your risk of coronary heart disease... www.hsph.harvard.edu/magazine/magazine_article/is-butter-really-back/

Plus it contains protein, calcium & other good stuff & aids in the digestion of some nutrients

Enjoy your buttered toast & bread 😊

MissCharleyP · 10/11/2018 16:02

I love butter, has to be proper butter though not spread. I wouldn’t mind if DH didn’t - more for me!!

RockinHippy · 10/11/2018 16:03

On,y real butter though, if it's anything else, I'd agree with him

zukiecat · 10/11/2018 16:04

I don't eat toast or crumpets either

We have rowies here, I just like mine dry

cricketmum84 · 10/11/2018 16:05

We have a weird family split on this subject.

Myself and DS cannot imagine anything remotely bread-like without butter. It is sick and wrong to eat dry bread, even with another filling.

DD and DH are the strange old dry toast munchers and think butter is wrong and yak. They are wrong!

Nissemand · 10/11/2018 16:05

I hate butter.

That's unfortunate, because loads of pre-packed sandwiches use it.

Half the cake aisle is a write off too, with all the cakes slathered in buttercream.

It tastes like vomit to me.

Petalbird · 10/11/2018 16:05

I hate butter in sandwich's yukky slimy stuff, always have to send buttered sandwiches back in cafes as they never put it on the menu. However I love melted butter on toast and crumpets. Does this make me half weird
