Butter on bread?

1400spincycle · 10/11/2018 15:35

A light hearted one to solve a long running silly dispute between me and DP.

I like buttered bread. So do the kids. I butter toast, toasted teacakes, use it in sandwiches etc. DH maintains that this habit is disgusting, revolting and a strange abberation. He claims that lots of people hate butter with a passion and that I am the unusual person. (I am struggling to think of a single other person who feels as strongly on this topic)

So Mumsenet. What the verdict?

Butter makes everything better. My favourite is buttered toast with sea salt sprinkled over the top.

SoyDora · 10/11/2018 16:06

I don’t drink tea, only coffee but if I’m making multiple drinks I always use a separate spoon to stir tea and coffee! I don’t want tea contamination in my coffee and I thought tea drinkers would feel the same!
I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like butter. I can’t stand any form of fake spread but real butter is one of life’s pleasures.

@MonoClue in another lifetime, I used to work in a big pub with 'a room' for 'occasions'. We used to do a lot of self-catered weddings and I'd often be working the bar in the room, so would be offered food. ALWAYS there would be an Aunty Mildred or Grandma behind the trestle table, with a secret stash of ham or egg mayo rolls that had 'Best Butter' on, instead of the catering pack of Stork they'd used on the rest. And they always sneakily took us (staff) to one side and offered them proudly...we felt bad for taking them, but were practically force fed these Best Butter Rolls. 😊

Anyone who remembers rationing will realise what a god-given gift butter is.

abbsisspartacus · 10/11/2018 16:09

I'm gluten intolerant so the bread is very fragile butter is an important step towards stopping the bread from dissolving around the filling

charliebear78 · 10/11/2018 16:11

My 11 year old son hates butter and yes he does eat dry toast(with a dippy egg) When we go out we have to ask for no butter on sandwiches or he won't eat them!

Ohyesiam · 10/11/2018 16:12

Take him o to the supermarket to o serve the amount of butter for sale. Can he really think that is a niche market?

Jaxhog · 10/11/2018 16:13

He's the weirdo, not you.

cricketmum84 · 10/11/2018 16:13

Oh yes and DH and DD both eat crumpets without butter!! Sacrilege!!

tolerable · 10/11/2018 16:14

my ds2 hates butter, also my sister. neither of them would eat anthing which has been "contanimated"with it. the revulsion is real. ..tho neither of them probli even know about the others buttertude cos miles between us/rare meetups. ..ds2 regularly eats dry toast, but then ive had him ask for peanut butter between two digestives..,,so suspect hes odd anyhow

catsandogs · 10/11/2018 16:14

He's the weirdo. Butter is one of the foods of the Gods

BatsAreCool · 10/11/2018 16:17

I tried to convert to margarine or 'spread' but now I have my proper butter and DH has his spread Grin

Mmmm thinking about crumpets and butter

Crinkle77 · 10/11/2018 16:18

I love butter! Can't stand margarine and don't know how anyone can eat it. My mil buys this awful can't believe it's not butter type rip offs. It's awful and had this horrible plastic synthetic smell. Yuk!

ladydickisathingapparently · 10/11/2018 16:19

I love butter, not on sandwiches. But if having a toasted teacake or similar I like so much that DH asks “would you like some teacake with your butter?”

I had two slices of fruit toast in Starbucks this week and was given one portion of butter for both slices. What kind of sick mind thinks that’s ok?

PyongyangKipperbang · 10/11/2018 16:19

I hate people like this! "I dont like/do XYZ therefore I am normal and anyone who does like/do XYZ is weird".

If he is right, why is there such a huge fridge full of butter/spreads etc in every single supermarket in the country?!

Aragog · 10/11/2018 16:21

Teen DD doesn't like butter. She is strange! We tell her often that this is not normal, lol!

DH always says I have bread with butter. I love lots of thick butter on a good piece of bread. I can eat it just as it is. No need for any other topic tbh. It is my biggest downfall when it comes to dieting, etc.

Ocado do a delicious butter which is full of small crystals of salt. Yum!

MickHucknallspinkpancakes · 10/11/2018 16:21

Is he not originally from the UK OP?

My exDP was as appalled by me slathering butter on my bread, as I was by his use of mayonnaise on toasted sandwich bread for breakfast every morning.

mimibunz · 10/11/2018 16:22

Salty butter on warm sourdough bread is one of the Wonders of the World.

Tottie · 10/11/2018 16:25

Your DH is a loon. Only PROPER butter in this house. It adds to the flavour of most sandwiches and stops the bread from going soggy if you're not eating the sandwich as soon as it's made. As PP's have said, it is the food of the gods and tastes devine on freshly baked bread. And agree crumpets are just a vehicle for melted butter consumption. Margarine is the Devils spread, even rats won't eat the stuff!

MonoClue · 10/11/2018 16:25

@Ecofluffynanny
Oh yes,the taking their own food into places! MIL thought tinned salmon barmcakes with best butter was pushing the boat out. And if the pub served her sherry in a "schooner" she was in Heaven. She used to buy one sherry then craftily top it up from a small lemonade bottle she'd filled with her own.

VisitorsEntrance · 10/11/2018 16:26

You know that the spread you can buy isn’t margarine. I don’t think there is a single margarine on the market anymore.

Anyway, butter is the best thing ever and Brittany butter even better.

Thehop · 10/11/2018 16:27

Haha

My son hates butter and eats dry toast

I’m ashamed of him 😂

Eliza9917 · 10/11/2018 16:27

Omg I need to try double buttered toast!! I think I'll make some bread tomorrow. I've been meaning to make my own butter too so I might give that a go as well.

snowone · 10/11/2018 16:27

Seriously who doesn't love a good thick layer of lurpack on a slice of hot toast or crumpet! Everything gets buttered in this house!! Grin

fishonabicycle · 10/11/2018 16:28

He is probably not human.
