Butter on bread?

1400spincycle · 10/11/2018 15:35

A light hearted one to solve a long running silly dispute between me and DP.

I like buttered bread. So do the kids. I butter toast, toasted teacakes, use it in sandwiches etc. DH maintains that this habit is disgusting, revolting and a strange abberation. He claims that lots of people hate butter with a passion and that I am the unusual person. (I am struggling to think of a single other person who feels as strongly on this topic)

So Mumsenet. What the verdict?

The only thing I put butter on is white toast. Sandwiches/jacket potato/corn etc I agree with your husband! I sure make up for my lack of butter in those by eating a lot of cake though.

ElainaElephant · 10/11/2018 16:31

So if he things is weird to put butter on the things that butter is normally used for... What does he think butter is actually for?

Oddsocksandmeatballs · 10/11/2018 16:32

My daughter hates butter or any form of spread, she makes sandwiches without and if having toast or crumpets she just puts jam or marmite straight on to them. I think she is a devil child who was swapped at birth.

YANBU.

PMSL who eats bread (or toast) with no butter?

Everyone has butter. Unless they are on a strict diet.

Your DH is weird OP!

ladydickisathingapparently · 10/11/2018 16:35

Eliza you need to try the student special - two variants:

  • buttered toast (2) with a slice of buttered bread between; or
  • buttered bread (2) with a slice of buttered toast between.

Basically both variants are mostly butter!

Rosieposy4 · 10/11/2018 16:36

I hate butter but don’t mind a tiny bit of sunflower pure under marmite.

Unicornandbows · 10/11/2018 16:37

alwaysstressed · 10/11/2018 16:42

I only have butter on my toast, wouldn't dream of putting it on a sandwich or a roll or anything else.
I was fussy as a child and didn't like it

AsleepAllDay · 10/11/2018 16:45

Butter is fantastic. We never buttered sandwiches before filling them as kids (like they do in sandwich shops) but otherwise it's a great topping. Butter and jam, butter and honey, yum

PanamaPattie · 10/11/2018 16:45

I hate, hate, hate margarine. I only use real butter. I once had a "buttered" tea cake in Yorkshire and it was swimming in cheap marg. Disgusting.

DH hates butter (more for me). He uses Marmite instead. 🤢

TheBitterBoy · 10/11/2018 16:45

My DH hates butter in sandwiches, he says when it's there it's all he can taste, whereas I think that's the point! He doesn't butter bread or toast if he's having anything else on it, so no butter with jam on toast, or only cream cheese on a bagel. I've only seen him eat plain buttered toast if he's having boiled eggs, but if he was having poached or scrambled eggs on the toast he wouldn't butter it. I don't think it's that unusual, I know a few people who are similar.

ChipsAndKetchup · 10/11/2018 16:47

Dry toast? What fresh hell is this?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 10/11/2018 16:47

Butter is delish!

On bread, toast, crumpets, teacakes . . . .SOREEN! (where would that be without butter so thickly spread that you can see the teeth tracks in it where you've bitten?) . . .

NO FOOD exists that is not improved by the addition of butter . . . . (except possibly chewing gum, which isn't really food because you don't swallow it).

Loonoon · 10/11/2018 16:52

I agree with PP who say that the only point of bread/tea cakes etc is to keep your fingers dry as you eat as much butter as humanly possible but my SIL visibly gags at even the smell of butter. He likes low fat spreads etc. He also dislikes cheese and cream and mayonnaise, his idea of a feast is 2 plain grilled chicken breasts or half a pound of salmon - a very odd man. And an unlikely life partner for my veggie, dairy loving daughter.

VelociraptorRex · 10/11/2018 16:53

Hot asparagus with butter melting on top and a little sprinkle of salt... mmmmmm.

I was asked to make some dairy free cakes for a friend once - I tried and warned her they were vile, and made a separate batch of cake full of yummy butter for everyone else Smile guess which cakes were left over...

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 10/11/2018 16:55

LOVE butter! I buy Brittany Butter with salt crystals and spread it liberally on toast, fresh bread, crumpets.... wonderful stuff.

Babybearsporij · 10/11/2018 16:56

I know butter is a divider. There are 3 types of people when it comes to butter:

1 - butter lovers
2 - butter haters
3 - butter lovers pretending to be butter haters due to the diet culture.

My family are proud butter lovers. Proper butter as well, none of this margarine stuff.

You crack on with your butter OP and live & let live!

AdaColeman · 10/11/2018 16:59

Melting butter on hot thick toast or crumpets is fab! It has to be salted butter though!
However, butter on a bacon sandwich is very wrong. Brew

MrsCatE · 10/11/2018 17:00

This is my first: LTB

TheWiseWomansFear · 10/11/2018 17:01

Is he American? I find they don't butter bread (I assume in many areas it would turn rancid in the heat).

It's a very common English food habit and stops food being dry...

StrawberrySquash · 10/11/2018 17:02

Butter is the best. Butter on good bread is delicious. Just butter on toast for me. Not interested in jam etc. Which some people find odd.

AwdBovril · 10/11/2018 17:02

DH used to claim to prefer margarine but I had butter - it was only when I complained about the butter mysteriously being used, that DH admitted that he actually preferred it too. Now we just buy butter.

TheWiseWomansFear · 10/11/2018 17:02

I also don't know anyone who HATES butter (many hate it being scraped unevenly from the tub though).

PumpkinParent · 10/11/2018 17:06

Husband has soup with unbuttered bread. I find it totally weird. If he has sandwiches or toast, he has the barest scrape of insipid olive spread. And it looks like it has passed down through the genes as the elder Pumpkin child eats dry bread too. Pleasingly the baby is a big butter lover.

humblesims · 10/11/2018 17:06

I love butter! god I love butter. My DS wont eat it. Or gravy Confused
