It was banned for being too political. I like Iceland

What about African, South Anerican and RSPO palm oil? Are they bad for for the Far East rain forest? Please show some light on it?
By the way advert is fantastic.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 10/11/2018 17:41

It's originaly a Greenpeace film- I watched it a few weeks back on FB several times Confused

Cambalamb · 10/11/2018 17:48

Great advert but it's not a Christmas advert. Can't see why it was banned.Good on Iceland, they might get my custom!

graysquirrel · 10/11/2018 17:58

I live next to an inner city Iceland store's back entrance (deliveries, online deliveries etc). From the things I've seen/experienced if you think this advert means they are a caring, ethically minded company you'd be very wrong.

VassalageorChaos · 10/11/2018 18:02

Come on, graysquirrel - spill!

FrumpyTrumpy · 10/11/2018 18:04

Interesting that it has 2 million views in 2 days and that stupid John Lewis penguin advertisement has less than a million after 4 years.

FrumpyTrumpy · 10/11/2018 18:05

Tbf that could be down to one mismanaged store greysquirel and not company policy.

mamalovebird · 10/11/2018 18:08

They knew it'd be banned. DH's business partner knows someone involved in it's making (they are in the business). There wasn't a massive budget so this generates a bigger reach as people protest against the ban.

And more people watch stuff on social channels anyway so it's a win win for Iceland. Makes their message spread further.

eddiethehorse · 10/11/2018 18:13

Exactly what they wanted. Well done them!

bourbonbiccy · 10/11/2018 18:17

What a brilliant advert, people should be aware of the consequences of what they buy and the world we are leaving behind.
It will actually make me shop at Iceland in support ... Brilliant
YANBU to want to see its is completely Unreasonable to ban it though.. Hoping if they keep people oblivious. they are not accountable for their actions

Crinkle77 · 10/11/2018 18:17

Very clever marketing plot but nothing could ever convince me to shop in there.

MiddlingMum · 10/11/2018 18:21

I love the advert and love our local Iceland for the own-brand vegan products. And also for the indefatigably cheerful woman on the till.

I suspect that by being banned, more people will see it than all the other adverts on tv.

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 10/11/2018 18:22

Great ad, important message!

Dontknowwhatimdoing · 10/11/2018 18:32

They will certainly get my custom as a result of this advert. I've been to Borneo, and driven through miles of palm oil plantations. It needs to be stopped.

GinLimeandLemonade · 10/11/2018 18:55

This is the link to the Greenpeace page which has a link to their petition calling for all big brands to stop using palm oil in their products.

poppym12 · 10/11/2018 19:02

Excellent ad. Can't understand why it's been pulled though. No more offensive than all the 'Save the insert as appropriate' ads on our screens.

I think it's a good ad, nothing sparkly and typically spend spend spend Christmas about it but those are the mindless ones I don't bother watching. This could be shown all year round.

Vivianebrezilletbrooks · 10/11/2018 19:14

Whatever the motivations it's still a very clever marketing campaign, they made it knowing it would get banned,to heighten public interest in it.The more something is banned, the more interest and media coverage it generates.
People flocking to their local stores as a result as is evident by the comments on here.
Record profits at end of the year for Iceland.
Job done.
There is no getting away from that.
Oh and as a footnote it's actually Dame Emma Thompson whose narrating it.

Smurf52 · 10/11/2018 19:28

I love Iceland but approximately 36 years ago they closed my branch to make way for a Morrison’s supermarket plus shopping centre 😩. The good News is that Iceland IS returning to my town in a previous Poundland store (I loved Poundland too 🙄) next Spring. So I will soon be able to buy lots of palmoil free products from my favourite Frozen foods store. I think the ad is very clever, but a bit remote from the usual Christmas themes. That’s progress I suppose!

Boulty · 10/11/2018 20:16

The sharing of this advert has made me go to Iceland. I will use them in future as well.

People are talking about orangutans and Iceland so it is a win win for them.

MoronsandNeurons · 10/11/2018 20:19

Well done Iceland! I too don’t really see how this is political - it’s the planet we all share and should be looking after.

I like Iceland - and pleased for them they are turning their reputation around. My DH is a rather snobby Waitrose shopper but I’ve served him several meals with Iceland elements that he’s thoroughly enjoyed.

Also delighted they are working to eliminate plastics. Every week our recycling bin is full to overflowing. It’s just criminal how much plastic is made that then ends up in landfill.

We don’t need all this packaging. The ideal would be to go back to the days of the butcher and greengrocer, sans commercial packaging, with milk and water in glass bottles.

I used to work at an M&S and whilst I’m pleased they are against deforestation - when they started plan A you should have seen the amount of unnecessary plastic bag around each garment & bag before it even reached the shop floor. I hate it when marketing campaigns are mainly there to look good. But at least with things like this they do actually make a difference, despite commercial objective.

And who cares they re-used the advert from greenpeace? It’s done the job, right?

Grimtimes · 10/11/2018 20:24

Here's a guide for you .... Palm oil seems to be in everything Shock

To ask you to watch the Iceland banned Xmas ad?
Lucieaew · 10/11/2018 20:25

I think in a round about way it represents the spirit of Christmas ‘good will to all men’(and beasts) we should be mindful of the affects we have on others. It’s a great message. I mean what does a monster under a bed, a man in the moon flogging telescopes have to do with Christmas. This to me represents more the true meaning.

Teacher22 · 10/11/2018 20:40

If virtue signalling wasn’t bad enough doing it for commercial gain at Christmas has to be.

Tistheseason17 · 10/11/2018 20:51

❤ this advert
If we didn't eat cakes/biscuits/choc it would not only be good for our health, it would reduce demand for palm oil and it's by products.

Less demand = less production and less deforestation and human exploitation. Not just about the orangutans.

Maisymoo22 · 10/11/2018 20:56

How is this a Christmas add... saw it at the cinema months ago!

Really hit home though very thought provoking.

Good for you Iceland!!!
