It was banned for being too political. I like Iceland

I've been thinking about it being Christmassy after seeing a few twitter comments that it's too sad to show for Xmas but I think Xmas is a time to be charitable and the season of goodwill

And also the time we will all be buying a load of shit in a panic - making it easier to ethically buy is very good at Xmas

It's got fuck all to do with Christmas,

Isnt Xmas the time we think of others?

Its no stretch to think of the near extinction of animals so intelligent and closely related to us.
Its down to us to protect them and all the other animals and ecosystems on the planet. There are new species being discovered every day, new plants that have been proven to have medicinal properties. Yet we are killing off jungles the size of wales every day.

VerbeenaBeeks · 09/11/2018 23:03

Isnt Xmas the time we think of others?

Exactly, a very good point there!

EnidButton · 09/11/2018 23:14

It's very a important message, it's very effective and it should be seen.

It's certainly made me stop and think about what products I buy. I have things in my house with palm oil. Once used up, I won't have it again. Not just because of an ad but because it is as sad as fuck and it's time we all did a bit to stop it.

EnidButton · 09/11/2018 23:16

Jesus. According to this palm oil can be listed under 200 different names. Confused

MeteorMedow · 09/11/2018 23:19

I love this advert and strongly think that ethically driven advertising should be allowed. It’s censorship to ban stuff like this!

madeyemoodysmum · 09/11/2018 23:27

Hurrah for Iceland!!!!!! I love it.

Knittink · 09/11/2018 23:35

I can't believe people are campaigning for it to be unbanned. Why on earth would Iceland want it to be unbanned? It's getting far more publicity by being banned, plus they don't have to pay for it to be on t.v.!

selfidentifyinggiraffe · 09/11/2018 23:40

I think the publicity will be short lived but it's been far more effective than just being on our screens and made us pay attention

But it being played into homes several times a day is worth it to reach a broader audience- kids, elderly, techphobes etc

I did hesitate on signing the petition wondering first but decided I would

I used to work for Iceland and wanted to add a couple of things. For newbies, they sell fish bycatch, which is fish which would otherwise been thrown back into the sea. Not in all stores but it's worth looking out for if you're trying to be more sustainable.

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/inews.co.uk/news/consumer/iceland-what-the-fish-bycatch-sustainability/amp/

And a previous poster says they don't have much own brand stuff. Yes, they do! Loads.

Forforkssake1 · 09/11/2018 23:59

Watched this with the sound down and was VERY confused by the lack of frozen chips and cheap mince pies?!

VerbeenaBeeks · 10/11/2018 00:33

Erm... try watching it with the sound up?! Confused Grin Might understand what it's more about then lol.

MummatoaMunchkin · 10/11/2018 01:56

I already liked Iceland but this makes me like it more!

Theres a petition started to get it unbanned (im half asleep i cant think 😂) it popped up in my emails and i thought some people might be interested.

Its easy to sign, its one click if you have an account im often signing petitions:

Lovingbenidorm · 10/11/2018 02:07

How has this beautiful, strong message been banned?
Really, can anyone actually tell me me why this has been banned?

jemihap · 10/11/2018 07:40

Lovingbenidorm - Because, as I've said earlier in the thread, we live under a Corporatocracy... and once people realise this it makes perfect sense as to why it's been banned.

ILoveAutum · 10/11/2018 08:09

Lovingbenidorm RTT, it has been explained by people in the industry.

dontyouforgetaboutme · 10/11/2018 08:11

They knew the ad would be banned. It's a PR exercise. A very clever one.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 10/11/2018 08:18

That list of alternative names is a bit weird. I mean Beta Carotene???? Really?

I suspect the list isn't quite what the headline says it is!

This one seems more reasonable, if less scary!

www.ran.org/the-understory/palm_oil_s_dirty_secret_the_many_ingredient_names_for_palm_oil/

ILoveAutum · 10/11/2018 08:21

DC had homework the other night to find as many products in the home as they could with Palm Oil in them. I was impressed that they couldn’t find many at all. The school had given them a short list of ‘alternative names’ which they checked too. Still not many. A few more when I gave them the MUCH longer list, and despite being quite aware of how devious corporations can be with regard to labelling were still quite shocked and annoyed at just how many names this is hidden under.

We don’t normally shop at Iceland it, but we are now going this weekend to see what they do, that we buy. I’m guilty of thinking of them as the ‘beige crappy frozen food’ place.

The advert really got to me. I do try to avoid PO, but I’ll be trying harder to remember more of the gazillion names it’s hidden under.

I accept that doesn’t solve the issue of sustainable employment etc

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 10/11/2018 10:00

This is what Christmas should be about, taking care of others, not mindless consumerism.

Well done, Iceland.

Clearoutre · 10/11/2018 13:03

I was at a Christmas party last year and there was a cake stand filled with tiny, bite-size vanilla slices, chocolate eclairs, etc - they were DELICIOUS!

I’d never met the hosts before but just had to find out where the desserts from. She leaned over and half whispered “They’re from Iceland and were super cheap!”

WithAFaeryHandInHand · 10/11/2018 13:06

Yanbu.

RainbowsArePretty · 10/11/2018 16:04

Great advert & great message

mummyhat · 10/11/2018 17:33

It couldn’t be MORE in the spirit of what Christmas —should be— is about. Bang on.

I try very hard to make sure I don’t buy palm oil. Never shopped at Iceland in my life....until now. PR geniusWink
