It was banned for being too political. I like Iceland

I started shopping in Iceland in April when they brought out their amazing vegan burgers. It was in store that I saw they were going to stop using palm oil and reduce single use plastic. In September they expanded the vegan selection and its became my go to store. I’m always meeting fellow tree hugging, lentil loving types in there now. I think the advert is great and just as Christmassy as all the John Lewis ones. Plus a classic song isn’t being mangled. Have so far managed to avoid seeing the John Lewis ad this year or heard what song is being fucked up.

Oopsusernamealreadytaken · 09/11/2018 19:13

I wonder if it wasn’t banned at all but part of a massive marketing ploy? Either or it worked!

Avegemitesandwich · 09/11/2018 19:17

The thing is, if you just eat proper food and no processed crap, then it's incredibly easy to avoid palm oil isn't it?

sweeneytoddsrazor · 09/11/2018 19:25

@Avegimitesandwhich no because it is not just in food. It is also found in cosmetics, laundry products, a wide range of goods.

Yes that's true actually. And while I am quite good with food, I am shit with toiletries etc and will just go for a cheapo option, I also find that a lot of the 'natural' stuff just isn't very effective. Something to think about though.

Absolutely. I make my own bread, cakes, biscuits, quiches etc. because the bought versions are full of unnecessary ingredients. However, everyone has occasion to buy some processed food sometimes so it's absolutely worthwhile supporting a reduction of palm oil in products.

Ruffina · 09/11/2018 19:31

There’s no such thing as”proper” food. Processed food (whatever that means) and other food all has the same nutritional value, depending on how you treat it.

No food has medicinal properties. Despite what many MNers might think,

Olinguito · 09/11/2018 19:32

Palm oil seems to be in most bread too - I buy vogel or bread from the Polish shop now as it is palm oil free

kaytee87 · 09/11/2018 19:33

Iceland have a very clever marketing team. Good for them and great advert. I can see it being shared far and wide on social media.

I'm talking about making stuff from scratch so that you know what is in it. Im not saying I do this all the time myself, but it's a pretty good way of avoiding palm oil in good isn't it?

Avegemitesandwich · 09/11/2018 19:34

Food, not good.

Avegemitesandwich · 09/11/2018 19:35

Yes, it's already filling my newsfeed! Grin

oflow · 09/11/2018 19:36

Bloomtown Botanicals are an amazing ethical company making palm oil free toiletries, highly recommend.

I buy palm oil free as much as possible

House4 · 09/11/2018 20:15

Well done Iceland. It's made me think.
Whoever said upthread that being an ethical consumer is hard work is spot on.

HedgehogPoo · 09/11/2018 20:25

Sorry, my laptop is playing up and I'm struggling to see if this has already been posted, but there's a petition on Change-org about the advert. I've tried to include the link but failed! I'm sure that someone will be able to add it, if it hasn't already been done up-thread.

Moussemoose · 09/11/2018 20:38

Brilliant ad.

Mum2jenny · 09/11/2018 20:45

Excellent ad, not sure why it's been banned but nrtft

I think it's a great ad, and it's a shame that they've banned it!
So hard to avoid palm oil products, it seems to be in everything. Good on Iceland for ditching it from their own brand products.

Cherries101 · 09/11/2018 21:47

It’s perfect.

ButchyRestingFace · 09/11/2018 21:52

It's got fuck all to do with Christmas, but it's a very good ad, and reminded me of the need to check the ingredients of the products I buy.

Hopefully it will get tonnes of publicity for being banned.

PeaceRiot · 09/11/2018 21:53

Good on Iceland! Obviously they’re trying to boost their sales but this is clever and good. It is hard to be an ethical consumer and this is helpful. There’s an Iceland close to me but I never use it. Now I want to go to there! I wasn’t aware that they’d cut out palm oil or if their vegan range. Good for Iceland! I doubt if the advert ban will hurt them, it’s got people talking.

VerbeenaBeeks · 09/11/2018 21:58

I dunno, it kind of is Christmassy if it's reminding people that their own products are palm oil free and that you don't need it in your Christmas nibbles and they can help - advertising their produce for Christmas.
I think so, anyway Smile

VerbeenaBeeks · 09/11/2018 21:59

Pressed to soon - they have a BRILLIANT vegan range, our local one has meatballs, mince, sausages, burgers and strips amongst other stuff.

MinecraftHolmes · 09/11/2018 22:02

Yep. I was checking the box of Aldi’s sis sully selected mince pies tonight and they were palm oil free, right until the very end of the ingredients list when it was listed as an ingredient in what I thought was the icing sugar dusting! So disappointed!
