It was banned for being too political. I like Iceland

That’s a great advert! Why was it banned?

I think it’s good for Christmas as well - Christmas isn’t supposed to be just about excessive gluttony it’s supposed to be about thinking of others.

Although I’m appalled at the way the narrator says orangutan Grin

LasMeninas · 09/11/2018 13:00

I don't really get it. What is the reason for the ban? What does "too political" mean?

UrsulaPandress · 09/11/2018 13:01

Well that's made me sob.

DeloresJaneUmbridge · 09/11/2018 13:01

Banned for being political my arse....banned for passing off the palm oil companies who probably gave a backhander to get rid of it. Hopefully everyone will see it as it appears to have gone viral which I doubt the palm oil companies wanted,

Environmental not political.

EveryCarIsAPplCarrier · 09/11/2018 13:01

Fantastic advert!

LasMeninas · 09/11/2018 13:02

"One of the stipulations enshrined in the broadcast code for advertising practice (BCAP), is that an ad is prohibited if it is “directed towards a political end”

“Clearcast and the broadcasters have to date been unable to clear this Iceland ad because we concerned that it doesn’t comply with the political rules of the BCAP code,” said a spokeswoman for Clearcast.

I still don't get it. What is the political end to which the advert is directed? To stop deforestation? Bizarre.

SoupDragon · 09/11/2018 13:02

It's a great advert.

Houseonahill · 09/11/2018 13:04

Why is it political? I don't mean to be thick but I really don't understand why it's banned or why it's political and not factual?

Very good advert though and will make me shop at Iceland more if I know they are palm oil free.

Racecardriver · 09/11/2018 13:04

That’s a bit lame (especially given that she decides to save the orangutans by drawing...on paper). But why the hell was it banned? Is there somewhere to complain to for ridiculous banning? Can we start a petition? That shouldn’t have been banned even if it was a bit rubbish.

LasMeninas · 09/11/2018 13:06

Ironically enough, the reason for it being banned was probably political.

CrookedMe · 09/11/2018 13:09

God, it's very earnest isn't it. Portraying it as their 'banned Christmas advert' is obviously a good marketing strategy for them though.

Willow2017 · 09/11/2018 13:09

Its a refreshing change from all the 'buy buy buy or your xmas wont be good enough' adverts.

If we cant think of how we are destroying natural habitats for the greed of big companies and consumerism at xmas then when the hell can we?
Even if we arent 'Christian' we think of others at xmas and making it special. What we are doing to our planet isnt special and at a time when adverts on tv have a big impact i think its a shame they banned it.

Political? Maybe but a lot more truthful than all the party political broadcasts we get at election time and they arent banned.

pennycarbonara · 09/11/2018 13:12

The regulations do say

the term "political" is used in the Code in a wider sense than "party political". The prohibition includes, for example, campaigning for the purposes of influencing legislation or executive action by local or national (including foreign) governments.

The character at the end writing a letter and talking about 'letting the whole world know' could certainly be seen that way.

They could have reworked the ad to remove that bit and replaced it with something about ..."And this is why Iceland have removed palm oil from all our products".

sackrifice · 09/11/2018 13:13

Do Iceland not sell any palm oil products then?

selfidentifyinggiraffe · 09/11/2018 13:14

I think it's exceptionally clever.. I'm a regular mum, I don't spend too much time on Greenpeace vids (if any) Iceland buy and rebadge it as it highlights something they're doing that's a fairly USP currently compared to the other supermarkets... get it banned and hey presto the average mums are wondering why it is banned, what does it have to do with Xmas, and learning it's easy to avoid palm oil and why we should...

I assume mums are probably Icelands biggest market so we spread the word!

HoustonBess · 09/11/2018 13:15

Ha ha you're doing their work for them.

Iceland are trying to make their brand edgier. Getting an ad banned is a great way of doing it, as is teaming up with Greenpeace and dumping plastic etc.

The ad being banned has given them more publicity than being aired would have. But chat away.

IamtheMistressofmyFate · 09/11/2018 13:15

Thanks for the link OP.

I wish they'd ban the bloody John Lewis, Asda and Sainsbury's adverts. They're always nauseating.

Thank you for giving us permission to chat on a discussion forum.

AjasLipstick · 09/11/2018 13:18

Why do they call it a "rang tang"?

Awfully twee and annoying.

Willow2017 · 09/11/2018 13:18

Tbh i dont get why its too political to state facts. They didnt mention govs nor companies. Surely we are capable of handling the truth on tv as opposed to all the head in the sand stuff we usually get?

Watch the tv prog on rescuing and rehabilitating orangs and they show the same horrors seen in the advert and much worse. Its happening right now. Orang mothers being killed as incinveniences for living there, babies left to die or caught and sold as pets.

There is no sustainable palm oil its a myth. We are wiping ecosystems off the face of the world. Places where we havent even discovered all the flora and fauna yet and when half the worlds trees have gone what do we plan on breathing?

Loonoon · 09/11/2018 13:19

I am impressed that they aren’t using palm oil and I didn’t know it before watching the ad. I will definitely look in next time I’m passing.

Palm oil is ubiquitous now - I tried to buy some treats in M&S a few weeks ago and gave up in the end because every bloody cake, biscuit and pudding had palm oil.

SuperstarDJ · 09/11/2018 13:19

Well I wasn’t expecting that! Faff all to do with Christmas but it’s a great enlightening advert.

Veganfortheanimals · 09/11/2018 13:25

Bloody good advert..which idiot banned it and why?

AfterSchoolWorry · 09/11/2018 13:25

I teared up watching that. 😥

CrookedMe · 09/11/2018 13:25

It's not clever, it's as cynical and self-serving as any other supermarket advertising.
