It was banned for being too political. I like Iceland

Were people not aware of the palm oil problem already? Good on Iceland for trying to bring the issues to a wider audience though.

Cadbury's take note - you've packed your products with shitty palm oil and they taste crap. Nestle have always been unethical but we liked to think Cadbury's was a cut above.

But it's not a fecking "rang tang". It's an Orang Utan.

selfidentifyinggiraffe · 09/11/2018 17:05

None of the big supermarkets could do this, not because they wouldn’t want to but because they couldn’t logistically do it.

Not yet. When the money speaks they will though

Brilliant ad. It's irrelevant if it's 'Christmassy' or not - it sends out the message and hopefully more and more people will boycott vile palm oil, both because it makes food taste of shit and destroys orangutan habitat..

It's time consuming - it takes forever to check ingredients whilst out shopping or ordering online but if by doing that I can save the life of one orangutan it will be worth the effort.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 09/11/2018 17:15

I thought they were calling it rang tang be ause its a cute child who can't pronounce orang utang

Talkinpeece · 09/11/2018 17:16

plaidlife
The people we are asking to give up their income have none of these things, we need clear ideas to support them at least alongside if not before we cut off their income stream
I mention Sri Lanka because I was there recently and our guide talked about it a fair bit.
Compared with other crops it adds much less value to the local economy and labour force.

LasMeninas · 09/11/2018 17:18

I thought they were calling it rang tang be ause its a cute child who can't pronounce orang utang

They were. That's quite obvious.

Apols if this has already been shared:

Avegemitesandwich · 09/11/2018 17:23

Well it's a great advert in that I would have thought Iceland products were packed with palm oil, so I am surprised to see they are not!

Avegemitesandwich · 09/11/2018 17:26

So this advert is banned for being too political but Sainsbury’s using the no man’s land football match to sell chocolate was cool. Ok then.

Yes exactly. Sainsburys exploiting the horrors of war to flog their chocolate was vile.

Out of interest, what can be used instead of palm oil in mass produced food?

Flashingbeacon · 09/11/2018 17:29

I would argue it’s just as Christmassy as the lonely man on the moon and meg burning down the house. How can you celebrate when others are suffering? Why not take the time to spread the love.
If they they’d stuck a scene at the end where the orang was pulling a cracker it would be a Christmas advert.
Maybe we should think about the true price of Christmas and mindless consumerism.

selfidentifyinggiraffe · 09/11/2018 17:31

@HedgehogPoo please repost what you meant to? It didn't work

silkpyjamasallday · 09/11/2018 17:40

I've never shopped at Iceland, that ad had me sobbing, I will be popping in for a look now as we eat a lot of fish so frozen is great for us.

Unescorted · 09/11/2018 17:46

If this is to political does that mean we are going to have all the gambling,, housing, medical, charity and alcohol adverts banned while we have legislation or funding decisions being debated? This is an advert saying that Iceland are no longer using a constituent in their products because it causes harm. It is not saying government change your policy (political lobbying) it is saying to consumers hey our product doesn't contain palm oil... If this is something worthwhile then come in and purchase our products (consumer advertising). There will be the arguement that Greenpeace is a political lobbying group.... In that case all charity ads should be banned too.

Well done to Iceland and Greenpeace.

GabsAlot · 09/11/2018 17:47

our iceland is like druggy central but theyve made a change so good on them

buckingfrolicks · 09/11/2018 17:49

That's me off to Iceland tomorrow- and I'll tell the staff exactly why I'm there. (Never been before)

M3lon · 09/11/2018 18:06

I'd seen this before via my green party membership. Any cynicism I have regarding Iceland's tactics here, is more than offset by the fact they have removed palm oil from their own brand products. I am extremely hopeful this will force all the other big supermarkets to do the same.

wombatsears · 09/11/2018 18:25

Iceland have gained a customer in me! I am so sick of checking labels for palm oil. Even founded it in Aldi's frozen veg recently. Who needs to put oil in frozen veg!?

wombatsears · 09/11/2018 18:27

Out of interest, what can be used instead of palm oil in mass produced food?

Anything with flavour! Palm oil is just used as filler because it's so cheap but it adds nothing positive in terms of texture and taste.

Littlecaf · 09/11/2018 18:33

Haven’t Iceland got a new CEO?

selfidentifyinggiraffe · 09/11/2018 18:38

@Littlecaf quick google says yes he's the son of the founder

Marks and Spencer have a sustainability programme (responsibly sourced and not contributing to deforestation) since 2016 ...

captainprincess · 09/11/2018 18:42

Wow, great advert. Ashamed to say I would have thought Iceland products would contain palm oil

WatermelonGold · 09/11/2018 18:48

I haven’t read the whole thread but I saw a greenpeace advert on fb the other day that said palm oil produces more oil per square metre than other oils do boycotting it isn’t the answer as more land would be needed to produce veg oil for us.

We need to use companies that don’t contribute to deforestation.

CiderBrains · 09/11/2018 18:48

They should show it to Cadbury's.. palm oil has ruined their chocolate 😞

VenusInSpurs · 09/11/2018 19:03

So is it cynical to not use palm oil in your products?

I can clearly see the tactics, a PR campaign that has made me look for palm oil in food, and given me the info that Iceland don’t use it.
