It was banned for being too political. I like Iceland

Best advert Christmas or otherwise I think I have ever seen.

selfidentifyinggiraffe · 09/11/2018 12:33

Not the video!!! One I was sent recently... have asked to delete will find actual link 😳😳😳😳😳😳😳

The thing is, it's nothing against the company or the ad itself. It's the fact that any ad with ANY political message in it will not be approved for broadcast. (I work in the industry).

It's actually an ad that Greenpeace made, which was re-badged by Iceland. Quite how they thought that would make it though the approval process is anyone's guess.

(It has got them a lot of positive publicity too though, which is the overall aim and possibly a risk they thought was worth paying for).

selfidentifyinggiraffe · 09/11/2018 12:35

Hoping it's actual link!!

That’s not going to sell many fish and chip voulavents is itWink

starrynight19 · 09/11/2018 12:37

I think it’s a very well made advert. Not sure what it has to do with Christmas.
Agree think they probably knew it wouldn’t be approved but gave both them and the plight of orangutans lots of publicity.

Pigeonpresent · 09/11/2018 12:38

Just watched the proper video, loved it, can’t believe it is banned?!

selfidentifyinggiraffe · 09/11/2018 12:39

Yes I suspect they knew it wouldn't be approved and it's a clever ad campaign

But I still think Iceland are fab! And I prefer it to Kerry katonas bottom for Xmas

OP posts:
puzzledlady · 09/11/2018 12:39

It’s a very good advert but really not for Christmas. It’s a very sad fact and a true fact, but I feel it’s inappropriate as a Christmas advert.

Yes - more should be done to publicise this atrocity (palm oil burning) - but this advert doesn’t represent Christmas in anyway.

Givemeallyourcucumber · 09/11/2018 12:40

What an absolutely beautiful advert. If only the adverts that were approved were like this.

selfidentifyinggiraffe · 09/11/2018 12:41

Thank you for removing my wrong link @MNHQ!!!!! 🙈😅

OP posts:
selfidentifyinggiraffe · 09/11/2018 12:43

@puzzledlady maybe I over thought the ad but I thought Xmas was a time to consider those less fortunate and since many products given and consumed for it would include palm oil it was really relevant

OP posts:
BathFullOfEels · 09/11/2018 12:45

Oh wow. I didn’t know Iceland’s own brands were palm oil free. That’s brilliant. I’ve never shopped there before but I will do my big shop there tomorrow. I wish more shops, customers and/ or politicians would put on pressure for goods to be palm oil free. Sustainable palm oil is such bullshit and gives me the rage.

seekingclarity · 09/11/2018 12:45

Excellent advert. Have shared. Hopefully more people will see it because of the ban. I like it even more because it isn't really a Christmas ad. It could be any time of the year.

POPholditdown · 09/11/2018 12:47

but this advert doesn’t represent Christmas in anyway.

Maybe that’s the point? Most Christmas ads are ‘spend, buy, waste’, even the ones that are meant to promote ‘selflessness’.

Plus, palm oil is used in a lot of chocolate too, and chocolate is a huge thing at Christmas.

Maybe the point is Christmas shouldn’t be an excuse

BlooperReel · 09/11/2018 12:47

I also did not realise icelands brands were palm oil free, but will definitely take a look for christmas nibbles etc from there now

PicaK · 09/11/2018 12:48

Right - off there this afternoon

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 09/11/2018 12:49

But I still think Iceland are fab! And I prefer it to Kerry katonas bottom for Xmas

Hahaha Christ yes!!!!

sweeneytoddsrazor · 09/11/2018 12:53

I think it's a far more appropriate Christmas message than all the rampant commercialism of the Coca-Cola truck and all the others. Christmas is supposed to be a time of peace and goodwill, reflection and hope not a time of who can get the most presents and eat the most mince pies.

speakout · 09/11/2018 12:53

Lovely ad.

BMOT · 09/11/2018 12:54

What a fabulous advert , granted it doesn't really say Christmas. However, I know I will be using it in my classroom in the future as a writing prompt and I bet loads of other teachers have the same idea !

WatchThisThread · 09/11/2018 12:54

I think it's time, and also thinking about another active thread today, that we really had a hard look at the waste and environmental damage that's all around us. ESPECIALLY at Christmas.

This is a thought provoking piece of work by Iceland and is perfectly timed to encourage us to reappraise the period of excess that's ahead of us.

Well done Iceland (and Greenpeace)

selfidentifyinggiraffe · 09/11/2018 12:55

I promise I don't work for Iceland but I'm super impressed

I've always just counted them as the cheap shop for junk food

But they're banning plastic (over time) in their own brand products

And have a range of own brand vegan products too and I haven't come across much convenience vegan food which will obviously encourage others to try if there are convenient frozen vegan foods

OP posts:
dingdongdigeridoo · 09/11/2018 12:56

Well, it’s definittely an effective ad. I also had no idea that their products are palm oil free, so I’ll definitely be shopping there more often.

TiredPony · 09/11/2018 12:57

I think getting banned has given them more publicity. Well played Iceland.
