It was banned for being too political. I like Iceland

It's not clever, it's as cynical and self-serving as any other supermarket advertising

But the outcome is still positive.

Willow2017 · 09/11/2018 13:29

But chat away.

Gee thanks. I didnt know we needed permission to talk about important issues.

I dont care how people come to know about this crisis as long as they do find out about it and are motivated to do something no matter how small about it.

I love the WWF ad too. Its pretty hard hitting and it needs to be to get the message across. We need more education on what we are doing to our planet out there, so we can all act to stop it.

Doyoumind · 09/11/2018 13:30

It's been banned because it was made by Greenpeace.

They knew it would be banned. They have saved £500k on media spend and gained free coverage in general and social media.

CrookedMe · 09/11/2018 13:30

Yes, you're right, I was just replying to the OP's comment that it is really clever. Well, you know, that's what you get when you pay millions of pounds to an advertising agency. I'n sure they do have core values, but as they're a big business, they're going to exploit those values for profit.

BabySharkAteMyHamster · 09/11/2018 13:30

I like iceland, we buy frozen fish etc there. Don't really go for the orange food section tho.

Theyre well known for treating staff well and try to use ethical packaging as well with very little fanfare or recognition. At least theyre trying, there's a lot to be said for that.

EvaReady · 09/11/2018 13:31

Excellent move on Iceland's part! Applause! Send the message out - it gets banned the message, still lives and they get good publicity.

EvaReady · 09/11/2018 13:32

And where's bloody Waitrose in all this, they used to champion ethical shopping....that would be because they have plenty of palm oil products under their label.

PtangyangkipperbangOi · 09/11/2018 13:32

I saw this advert earlier on twitter and i think its great, really lovely and a very refreshing change to the normal festive adverts.

I love Iceland, I stopped shopping there when the quality dipped but went back when they banned GM ingredients from their own brand. The quality has slowly improved over the years and now it is a regular on my shopping list. I love that you can order online and its delivered the next day. Or you can shop instore, leave it and its delivered later. SO much better than fighting with a trolley in the carpark!

My favourites from there are the breaded chicken goujons, hot dog stuffed crust pizza, pizza baguettes, the india street food range and the toad in the hole. Party food is great too. My kids adore the mini doughnuts and profiteroles, the spring rolls, mini toad in the hole and everything from the "naice" range. They also do mini knock off vienetas on a stick!

Ruffina · 09/11/2018 13:36

Iceland did something similar a few years ago - though not with a banned ad AFAIR - about GM foods. I suppose if you sell frozen food you have every right to point out that it’s actually a good way of preserving and selling food.

chazwomaq · 09/11/2018 13:36

Ours doesn't rhyme with stars.

NutElla5x · 09/11/2018 13:40

Fantastic advert.I'll bet a lot more mum's(and dad's of course) will be shopping at Iceland now.Good work Iceland!

greendale17 · 09/11/2018 13:42

This was made by Greenpeace NOT Iceland

maeb · 09/11/2018 13:44

It's better than seeing Kerry Katona's Prawn Ring that's for sure Wink
Shock

As for it being deemed 'too political' - surely all charity ads are 'too political' then?

Kudos to Iceland for this though.

Moominfan · 09/11/2018 13:48

Yea they've won my custom

lilyblue5 · 09/11/2018 13:49

Watched, it’s very powerful. I shared on Facebook and I never share anything. Thanks for bringing it to my attention OP

selfidentifyinggiraffe · 09/11/2018 13:51

@greendale17 correct! They struck a deal with Greenpeace for it

TokyoSushi · 09/11/2018 13:52

Brilliant!

twosoups1972 · 09/11/2018 13:55

I think it's a great ad, so clever.

I was listening to a discussion on LBC radio about this earlier and it made me think it's not the black and white issue we think it is (ie palm oil is bad). What about the people in those countries where palm oil is produced? It's their source of income. What alternatives are offered to those people if palm oil production is ceased?

shearwater · 09/11/2018 13:58

I'm sure I've seen the ad several times before. Perhaps it was at the cinema.

EerieSilence · 09/11/2018 14:02

Thank you for sharing the ad. I shared it on FB and will show it DD.
I keep telling her that all those crappy cheap sweets she wants to buy from her pocket money aren't only bad for her but also for the environment because they use the cheapest and crappiest ingredients to produce tons of them and keep the cost down so you can get yourself a fake chocolate bar for 50 cent.
She's very much into environmental protection so I think it will reinforce the message.

CoolCarrie · 09/11/2018 14:04

Brilliant advert, well done Iceland. This planet is fucked imo, in the words of Fraser from Dad’s Army we’re doomed and it’s all us humans fault! Now Brazil has an arsehole in charge who wants to destroy more of the rainforest

plaidlife · 09/11/2018 14:06

twosoups1972 makes an excellent point, banning palm oil use in the developed world isn't going to sort the issue by itself, the farmers need a sustainable alternative income stream. I saw in Costa Rica the impact of the farms but the guides in the local area were also clear that they provided much needed income for locals. So we have to stop using palm oil and buy something else they can farm instead.

TheFurryMenace · 09/11/2018 14:06

That's a fantastic advert, will certainly encourage me to shop there. Shame its been banned. We need to talk about this stuff.

plaidlife · 09/11/2018 14:07

Or look to tourism, but but has its own issues etc.

CoolCarrie · 09/11/2018 14:08

So if this advert makes just one of us stop buying items with palm oil in it then great. The Body Shop and Lush need to take note!
