To ask how I survive a night with a baby and NO NAPPIES?!!!

Carmen99 · 07/11/2018 18:28

Partner dropped baby off an hour ago...told me he had bought nappies. Ive been through bags...definitely no nappies...He's working tonight and will be miles away now. I have no one I can ask for help- neighbours elderly on one side, suffered very recent bereavement on the other side. Unbelievably my car is in garage and there are no shops within easy driving distance.
Does anyone have any ideas at all about what I can possibly do to get through night? Only use one nappy in night...usually change at 7pm and again at 6am. I've got swim nappies but sure they wouldn't work.
Got no other nappies in house.
Help!

If you're in the Hope Valley I will bring you some! DS is in size 4.

If not, cut a square from an old towel and follow a YouTube tutorial on how to fold a terrycloth nappy.

AprilShowers16 · 07/11/2018 19:22

Do you have a local facebay or community group you could post on? Ours is full of friendly local people who I’m sure would be able to drop some round

YeahCorvid · 07/11/2018 19:24

Use a muslin or a tea towel to make old fashioned nappies with a folded face cloth as a liner.

Make a triangle out of the big piece of material - with the point downwards
Take two facecloths, lie them inside on the middle
Lie the baby on his back with his waist on the flat line at the top of the triangle
Fold the side points of the triangle tightly downwards into his crotch
Pick up the bottom point of the triangle, fold it upwards between his legs and tuck it inside the "waistband" where his navel is
Pin the whole lot
Check the mattress protector on his cot!

Hand towel/muslins and use like a reusable nappy, cling film and/carrier bag for waterproofing. Sellotape or gaffer tap to secure

Tattandthis · 07/11/2018 19:27

Deliveroo do happy from co op

3boysandabump · 07/11/2018 19:27

Take the baby to the shop to buy nappies?

SoyDora · 07/11/2018 19:29

Hold the toddler over the toilet or sit them on a potty when they wake up in the morning

What about all the weed through the night? Not sure there are many 13 month olds who are dry through the night.

OP I’ve made a nappy with a muslin before, you can find videos on YouTube.

DonaldDucksTowel · 07/11/2018 19:30

Dont you have any friends or family? My Mum would (and has) nip out for me in similar circumstances before and I’ve done the same for SIL who lives about 25 mins away
Or I’ve ran round to a neighbour to borrow a nappy before now

binception · 07/11/2018 19:32

I think an old towel with a sanitary pad or similar inside sounds you best bet here, or ask on a local fb group for someone to drop some round and you can return them tomorrow (well, not return the ones you've used, I mean buy replacements obviously)!

Leonard1 · 07/11/2018 19:33

It will be fine. You are at home. Just think of the babies across the world where there are no disposable nappies or they can’t afford them. Tea towel or hand towel or t shirt cut in half. If you can call a mini cab company then great or a corner shop (they deliver in the snow or for elderly). Irritating but you will get through ok.

hibbledibble · 07/11/2018 19:33

Surely the most obvious is to take baby to the shops in a taxi?

If not, then make a cloth nappy. Cut up towel for the absorbent core, and cut up fleece blanket for the liner. Use the swim nappy as a wrap. It may leak, so a towel on the bed isn't a bad idea.

Incidentally cloth nappies are great: it means you are never without nappies.

Amazon now delivers within 2 hours but only in limited areas.

Cachailleacha · 07/11/2018 19:34

After you get through the night with swim nappy, sanitary protection, and towel. Any wees in the bath, toilet or potty are wees that don't end up in what you are using as a nappy.

MrSlant · 07/11/2018 19:34

Fleece is the answer here, if you have an old piece of fleece baby grow or a jacket you hate then rectangle of fleece next to the skin, small flannel/hand towel then swim nappy. They'll probably have the driest skin ever tomorrow morning. I used terry towel squares with the traditional pinning techniques and a fleece liner and had the pinkest, smoothest, happiest bottoms on my babies.

PippilottaLongstocking · 07/11/2018 19:36

Before I switched over to cloth completely I used to have a cloth nappy cover that I could just stick a folded up muslin/bit of old towel/whatever fabric I could find in in an emergency (don’t live close to shops either)

Thehop · 07/11/2018 19:36

Mrslant s suggestion above is perfect t and very close to clothbumming as improvisation!

Otherwise, tell us where you are I case any of us can drop off? I’m West Yorkshire, and can bring some.

PlayingForKittens · 07/11/2018 19:37

I hope you survive. But I must thank you for the thread made me realise I had no pull ups for the Boy! Managed to nip to shops, phew!

Carmen99 · 07/11/2018 19:39

Thank you soo much for all the suggestions. In the end I used a swim nappy with a large sanitary towel inside. I tied a big muslin round the swim nappy like a Terry nappy. I put him to sleep on a big baby towel. I'm just a bit worried as sanitary towel is scented...Hope it doesn't irritate his skin. I've no idea where it comes from...I never use scented but was biggest one I had.
Definitely don't have Amazon Prime or Fresh round here (I had to Google Amazon Fresh- never heard of it!) Otherwise that would have been great.
I do have a few friends round here (though none that could easily come...mostly got young kids etc).
I will report back in morning if it works.
In morning I'll give him a quick bath, put on fresh swim nappy, San towel and muslin-get dressed and set off for shops.
Partner isn't back till Friday. He's not even in this country anymore so definitely couldn't ask him to bring nappies.
I'm going to buy very, very large supply tomorrow. Lesson learnt.
Also thanks to person who said 'you will get through this'. Actually really helped. I suddenly thought...this is no big deal...in a few days it will just be a story. It really isn't a big issue in grand scheme...at all. Of course i knew this already....but reminder helped a lot.
Thanks all

Aren’t there any neighbours in your town with children. I wouldn’t even think twice if someone knocked on my door and asked for a nappy

ILoveHumanity · 07/11/2018 19:41

So I was on a camping trip and we ended up staying one night more than planned in the middle of wilderness with baby.. I had no nappies for 24 hours.

What I did was borrow my husbands boxers. Put a muslin cloth inside it. Use a safety pin to tighten the boxer. And put a towel under baby.

Did the job. Changed Muslim every nappy change and washed in the river stream and dried haha. I also used his clean vests as a liner when no more Muslins. And used my own knickers as an exterior when no more boxer haha.

Alternatively , use ur swim nappy and put inside it folded muslin. Not too comfy but will do.

Devillanelle · 07/11/2018 19:42

You could do an Asda order tonight and it'll be with you tomorrow morning?

Carmen99 · 07/11/2018 19:42

Forgot to add...thanks so much for everyone who has offered to bring some round. Incredibly kind. I'm not near any of u but reckon we should get through night. Thanks for suggestions.

ARGOS DELIVER UNTIL 10PM WHERE I LIVE :)

sirmione16 · 07/11/2018 19:45

Oh they don't sell disposable ones :( damn.

babochka · 07/11/2018 19:46

If you have a proper safety pin/a garment that could hold it on I'm sure you could use a muslin/small towel to just do an old-fashioned cloth nappy.

There are lots of good videos online i.e.

It should be fine - remember anyone over 30 probably wore these, most of the world still does, and lots of environmentally conscious parents choose to do this, it works fine!

CandyCreeper · 07/11/2018 19:48

i cant understand this. you do realise there are single parents who dont drive, bus???? taxi??? its not hard. i actually thought you had no money or something
