That a male just won a women’s cycling World Championship?

Can’t really get my mind round this tbh though i was aware of another male Laurel Hubbard taking medals in the Women’s Weight Lifting World Championships earlier this year. Are we really ready for males winning the Women’s Wimbledon Title and the women’s Olympic 100m Final?

I've never thought of myself as a feminist i am lucky enough not to have had things denied due to my sex and always felt things should be fair.

However now I feel that fairness (which has been hard won by amazing women throughout time) has in one sweep been lost.

Of course this isn't fair. It's like asking disabled atheletes to compete against able bodied athletes. Yes children's participation will suffer. We know that girls have lower self esteem (as a whole) playing sport at school. So if this is allowed to continue who will their inspiration be? Who will they look at and think you can do this so i maye can to.

It makes me think of the equity v equality v reality poster we use in education. Equality does not always mean fair as this sitiation clearly shows.

Transgenders do not want a separate category. This has been thoroughly debated on MN and MtF transgenders want to be in the women’s category as they argue they are women. To say anything else is now classed as transphobic. Unless women let the govt know their feelings about this then women’s sport will change. Even something as simple as park run - at mine the first man is in at 16 mins, the first women is coming in around 8th position.

categed · 15/10/2018 21:40

Sorry for typos some issues with my hands these days 🤔😢

GladAllOver · 15/10/2018 21:47

And yet if you ask them to define what is this woman that they want to be, they can't tell you. They don't know what a woman is but they want to be one!

AlphaBravo · 15/10/2018 21:50

What's the fucking point anymore??! Honestly.

Why even have mens and womens categories if men are just going to take over everything. Again.

If the 'Gold' medal winner can't understand how they are NOT biologically a woman and how they are not the real winner and how unfair it is to an actual biological woman... then I can only assume they are mentally ill in more ways than one 🤷🏼‍♀️

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 15/10/2018 21:58

Would it be ok for usain bolt to self identify as a woman now he's retired, and start sweeping up women's medals too? If not why not?

I’ve used this points with friends and there are still some very ‘woke folks’ who insist that it would be ok. They must see the disparity but are too busy being woke to admit it.
I despair but have no doubt that they will peak at some point when the Olympics are all male, apart from the equestrian sports. In fact, it would help immensely if Bolt did this, because it would highlight the absurdity of it all.

As it happens my chosen sport is equestrianism so it doesn’t impact on me personally, but I am so angry about this. I do wonder why ‘woke’ people can’t see that one of the few sporting events where males and females compete equally is equestrian sports. And guess why? The reason is that brute strength and speed alone is not what wins in that field.

I’m fairly strong for a female, can lift hay bales and handle horses, am active and fit. But I’m 5’1’’. OH, who’s male, 6”, does no sports, although has an active job, can easily overpower me and is way stronger and faster than me. Why do we think this is?

Studyinghell · 15/10/2018 22:06

Fml! It’s disgraceful, imagine this scenario in boxing or another contact sport 🙈

SlowlyShrinking · 15/10/2018 22:13

It’s happened in contact sports. Google gallon fox Tamika Brents.

KatherinaMinola · 15/10/2018 22:19

Part of the issue here is that most of these people would not qualify for men's sport at a higher or elite level even pre transition treatment. Which is all the more galling.

They most likely would never be any kind of professional athlete in the category of their sex. A handful were successful before transitioning but the majority could be considered mediocre until they identified out of that.

Yep, spot on. "Men identifying out of mediocrity."

longwayoff · 15/10/2018 22:30

All sportswomen please google Fallon Fox, a self id trans fighter currently earning a living beating up women for fun and money. S/he has won all of the 5 fights fought. It is disgusting and he should be in prison.

KTheGrey · 15/10/2018 22:32

I think the best alternative is "open" and "female (XX)" categories. McKinnon I find completely without empathy, so no doubt able to truly believe that rules altered to advantage McKinnon are the only fair ones.

Badmoonsarising · 15/10/2018 23:01

This article from last year was on the NUS voting to let students play sports in whichever gender they identify as. This is being pushed gor more and more with the US and Canada leading the way. Would like to know how the vote went. www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.telegraph.co.uk/education/2017/04/24/transgender-students-should-not-have-declare-birth-gender-applying/amp/

A lot of the current gap between women and men's sporting performance is "sociological not biological"

This made me angry too. Mediocre man says women just don’t try hard enough and that’s why we are weaker at sports Angry

ThePonderer · 15/10/2018 23:24

Maybe a male scientist will come along and tell us how to do sport better...

Probably involves not tripping over our skirts or getting glittery makeup in our eyes?

AlecTrevelyan006 · 15/10/2018 23:32

McKinnon is a cheat. End of. Sporting performance is so much more than just testosterone - and RM knows it.

Back in the day I was an above average club runner. For context my best times at every distance at every distance from 800m to the marathon are faster than the women's qualifying times for this European Championships. I have trained with, and socialised with women who competed at the very highest level. I also know plenty of women took their running very seriously and would be mightily pissed off about a second-rate bloke stealing their thunder.

Athletics is a good place to start looking at start like this because the performances are clearly measured. Take the 5000m for example. The qualifying time for women for the Europeans earlier this year was 15minutes 30 seconds. Five British women ran quicker than that. For comparison that time was beaten by 398 men. This year alone more than 100 British men have run faster than Paula Radcliffe's British record. I've run with guys that broke 14minutes for 5000m and never even get within a sniff of an international vest. One day, some of the guys at that level are going to thinking to themselves 'yeah, I'm talented, I train hard, why shouldn't I get access to lottery funding, and some free kit, and warm-weather training, and all-expenses invites to races abroad...???'

I used to think that no blokes would think like that... but I've thought about it more and actually, on reflection I did know some blokes that would try to win at all costs - even at my level.

For sport to be meaningful it has to be believable. It has to be real. And it has to be fair. RM - and others of that ilk - just make a mockery of everything. It's beyond a joke.

Lysistrataknowsherstuff · 15/10/2018 23:54

The woman who won bronze sounds rather pissed off on Twitter. I would be too if I were her. She's also a hand surgeon so presumably has a pretty good idea of what's biological and what's sociology.

TerfedOff · 15/10/2018 23:58

Haven't got time to read the whole thread but just wondered if anyone has pointed out that the woman who came third has tweeted to say how unfair it is.

blackteasplease · 16/10/2018 00:18

Oh god I'm agreeing with Katie Hopkins...

NoodleEatingPoodle · 16/10/2018 00:40

"One of the problems... is that elite athletes are in a sense freaks. We all have a genetic advantage that makes us good in the sports we’ve selected. And that typically ignores the wide range of types of bodies of people of that type. So we like to point to Caitlin Jenner and say look how big she is, that’s unfair to women. That ignores the 5 foot 1 kid who can’t throw a ball. It’s not the case that all trans women are these big six-foot-tall, 200-pound powerlifters. I happen to be a 6 foot tall, 200-pound powerlifter, but that’s beside the point." Confused

What's the problem? This is just another elite athlete Hmm with a male genetic advantage for the female sport he's chosen to compete it. It's not like this person is some male, 6 foot, 200lb power-lifter! Well, I mean, that's exactly what this person is, but that's not the point. Right?

TwistedStitch · 16/10/2018 00:40

It's really brave of that cyclist to state that it isn't fair, the sport issue seems to rely on the other competitors not rocking the boat so good for her speaking out. Interestingly McKinnon has retweeted that comment.

I don't agree with KH much but she has called out girlguiding and tweeted about both Jacinta Brooks and Karen White in the last week or so. She has an awful lot of followers so every little helps IMO.

SPOFS · 16/10/2018 04:39

Jen Wagner Assali was not the 3rd place rider. She came second, and she knows it.

ashvivienne · 16/10/2018 04:47

Wow the transphobia in these comments is absolutely horrifying. Trans female athletes need to have their testosterone levels checked before competing and those levels actually need to be lower than non trans females. There is strict ruling on this. I find it absolutely horrific reading these comments and people wonder why so many of us actually care about trans rights.
