Women should not have to fear being raped by fellow prisoners

In response to the Karen White case, there is a petition to ask the government to review their rules on putting males in women's prisons.

What about transgender women who are serving sentences for fraud, or theft? Ones with no sexual offending past? Is the likelihood that they going to rape other women so high that you want to infringe on their human rights? What about the risk to those individuals while in a mens prison?

CantankerousCamel · 12/10/2018 19:02

The rights of a male don’t trump the rights of a number of females.

Even without his rape stick, A male is bigger and stronger and more likely to resort to violence than a female.

They do not belong in women’s prisons. Ever.

BarbarianMum · 12/10/2018 19:05

What about it PolPot? Im pretty sure arrangements could be made in the men's estate to keep them safe if needs be. After all they're no less strong than any other man. Not sure why female prisoners should be the ones to be put at risk.

Biologicalreality · 12/10/2018 19:07

The petition calls for a change in the rules. They clearly aren’t working at the moment. Or do you think they are working perfect PolPotNoodle?

  • All rapes are committed by men. That does not mean that most men rape, but a transwoman is still the same risk.
  • None of this is about suggesting transgender people are dangerous as a class- it is about the reasons for sex segregation in the first place.
  • Forcing women to be incarcerated with men puts them at risk, as Karen White has proved (as if it needed proving).
  • The prison service should stop housing men in women's prisons.
  • There is a good argument for an exception for post op transsexuals, but most who fit that group will already be (legally) women.

It's not completely clear whether the prison service can exclude a transvestite (male) woman from women's prisons if they have a GRC because they must legally be treated as a woman in every way.

What about the risk to those individuals while in a mens prison?

As has been said many times: the rights of men should not trump the rights of women. This is not just about vulnerable women prisoners- erasing sex and denying reality will affect us all.

LemonJello · 12/10/2018 19:25

you want to infringe on their human rights?

There is no human right for males to be housed in the female estate.

Why do these "men' suddenly decide
they want to be women as soon as they're banged up.

DisrespectfulDodo · 12/10/2018 19:31

Then men's prisons need to keep them safe which isn't hard. This issue is not women's responsibility or their problem to solve.

Happy to sign. My husband wants to sign, too.

I hate all this talk about human rights
Sadly its not but If it were to me they'd lose their HR as soon as they stopped acting like humans.
