To ask what weird smells other people like?

My fella thinks I'm weird because I like to go in the garden and smell the damp wood on the shed.
If we are in the petrol station I open my passenger door and inhale as deep as I can which he says is embarrassing because I do it so obviously.
I love the smell of the pink stuff that car bumpers are patched up with aswell.
Also dogs when they've been in the rain.

Don't know how he can talk and say I'm a freak when he sits and enjoys the smell of his own farts.

Anyone else like weird smells that other people would find strange or just me?

I love the smell of tar when they're fixing the roads. I've loved it since I was tiny.

I also love the dampy musty wood smell. I walk past a hardware store every morning and take a big sniff because I can smell it from that store.

Finally the weirdest: I have this thing for dust. If I see a dusty surface I can't help wiping my finger through it and having a sniff. It's something that developed during my first pregnancy and hasn't left me.

LaurieMarlow · 10/10/2018 22:49

Chlorine. I love it.

BuddhaLove · 10/10/2018 22:49

@FlowThroughIt I've said that for years!! you are literally kissing something that just popped out of someone's fanny and hasn't been cleaned but it's perfectly the norm to do so.
Babies heads smell so good though to be honest. That milky, powdery, newborn smell. 😍

Our Hobb ferret, after he was done he smells sort of buttery toasty.

Not too keen on him when he skunks.

beeefcake · 10/10/2018 22:50

Bleach

FlowThroughIt · 10/10/2018 22:50

Ah been reminded by others...

Rotting Bananas. 🍌
Nail polish remover.
Rubbing Alcohol.

FlowThroughIt · 10/10/2018 22:52

@BuddhaLove

Oh good not just me then. 😂

I think people just suppress the knowledge and it's taboo to speak it aloud.

Truckingonandon · 10/10/2018 22:52

Yes to dogs paws!

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 10/10/2018 22:52

annoyed1212 - you’d be in your element in our house 😂

Catmum26 · 10/10/2018 22:55

magazines or brochures. not sure if it’s the smell of the ink or the paper they use

Crumbelina · 10/10/2018 22:55

'Petrichor' - A pleasant smell that frequently accompanies the first rain after a long period of warm, dry weather.

I learned this word a couple of weeks ago. It's my new favourite. Grin

Oh, and petrol, nail varnish, tarmac, wood filler. I was absolutely obsessed with smells during my second pregnancy last year. I'm not a huge fan of Zoflora (sorry!) but I'd wipe it around my sink just so I could take huge sniffs of it.

PawPawNoodle · 10/10/2018 22:55

Chlorine, bleach, new books, freshly printed paper.

Also remember those squishy buttons that old home phones used to have? New squishy buttons just after you pull off the protective plastic.

ratbaggy · 10/10/2018 22:56

PvC pencil cases I used to buy from woolworths as a child

Atalune · 10/10/2018 22:57

The smell of my dh after the gym.

My children’s musky bed sheets. Smells like their little warm bodies.

Hotel rooms- sort of astringent clean

Old school jotters.

DwangelaForever · 10/10/2018 22:58

Petrol is great

New carpet

The wood aisle of b&q 😍

InspectorIkmen · 10/10/2018 22:58

Another one for aviation fuel - I could happily stand on the Heathrow perimeter all day and just sniff the air. I suppose that is a bit weird.

AwdBovril · 10/10/2018 22:59

Coal smoke & wool (the knitting kind, not the kind that's still all mucky on a sheep!)
Rain on a warm day.
Washing that's been dried on the line.
The local woods in spring & summer. Wild garlic and flowers. And a faint mushroomy smell.

NotTheMrMenAgain · 10/10/2018 22:59

Rubber - but not in a fetish way, just like the smell!

DwangelaForever · 10/10/2018 22:59

Omg and fire lighters 😍

stopdropandroll · 10/10/2018 23:04

new denim when it smells all chlorine-y. my cat’s head. paper warm from the printer. sawdust. permanent markers.

stopdropandroll · 10/10/2018 23:05

ooh and agree with new carpet!

Ploppymoodypants · 10/10/2018 23:06

Yes to old fashioned creosote (not the new stuff)
The top of my dogs paws yes for sure
The fluffy fur behind my ponies ears in winter and his nose in the summer

Smells are really nostalgic aren’t they. Just a whiff of Joop and I am transported back to school in 1996 in an instant!

My parents tell me that as a young child (up to age 6) i was obsessed with smells and if they took me anywhere I would try and smell all the new things (instead of just looking). Their favourite story is where we went to a hotel on holiday and they took us into the restaurant and I dropped to all fours and sniffed the carpet!! I remember doing it as well. I just had an over powering urge to understand my world via smells! I still have a really strong sense of smell.

Tailfeather · 10/10/2018 23:08

Has nobody suggested matches yet? Love the smell.

And the smell of train toilet disinfectant! So distinctive!

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 10/10/2018 23:08

Creosote
Rubber (tyres and hot water bottles)
My cat's paws (smell like biscuits)
My forearms (also smell like biscuits, despite not using moisturiser or anything on them)
Fountain pen ink

Procraftinator · 10/10/2018 23:09

Musty, dusty building sites
Boot polish
