To think we deserve to use our "nice" stuff?

Every day I wear the same drab jeans and frumpy jumpers on rotation, yet I have a wardrobe full of beautiful tops and dresses in lovely finishes. Beautiful jewel tones in silk, linen or velvet still with the tags on that have never seen the light of day because I'm saving them "for best".

I've come to the conclusion that "best" never happens and "special occasions" rarely seem special enough when the day arrives. I seem to be waiting for all these worthy occasions that will be deserving of that bit of extra effort yet I can't remember the last time I gave myself permission to wear something that fell into the hand-wash only/iron on cool category...

Beaded indian slippers I never dare to wear around the house as they're too fragile.

The "nice" foundation kept at the back of the drawer, choosing instead to wear my cheap, old, dried up stuff because, you know, it's only Tuesday.

Good napkins shunned in favour of a scraggy bit of kitchen roll at dinner.

Scented candles never lit in case they, god forbid...actually burn....

My new resolution is to make use of at least one "special" thing that I already own every single day and stop accumulating treats that never get used.

Is anyone else guilty of this?

OP wear it, use it, enjoy it. Every day is ‘best’ because you are still here 😆. They are mere things unless you are finding joy in them and that can only happen if they come out of the cupboard.
Life is short, find joy in everything you can.

I can see exactly where you're coming from. What's the point of putting off wearing that nice garment until something special comes along? Because as you say it probably won't.

This isn't relevant for we adults whose feet have stopped growing but here's a childhood memory. I persuaded Mum to let me me have some glamorous shoes instead of a sensible pair. They were kept for 'Sunday best' - when I was eventually allowed to wear them they didn't fit anymore - in fact they were agony and I was in tears. Mum was annoyed and wouldn't let my change them until Dad intervened.

In those days we didn't have very much 'stuff' so things were perhaps treasured more. I'm also a cancer survivor so life is for living - not putting things off. Go girls!

I'm so guilty of this!! Some of it is because the 'best' things are probably not as comfortable, warm, easy to wear as my old staples! I am seriously going to make an effort to wear everything now though as to be honest that 'best' time may never come. Live for today from now on!

caringcarer China Search is your friend here! I have replaced discontinued pieces from this site, having dared to actually use stuff and suffered a few casualties. You can actually tag a maker and design which interests you, and if you're feeling more relaxed about it, you'll probably find the crockery survives anyway.....
So may stories here to remind us that life is for living.

...I've extended this to my DC. I have several ballgowns and beaded evening dresses etc from a previous life that the DC ooh and aah over. They been packed in tissue paper for years, doing nothing.

I've now given the DC the green light to dress up in them! At worst, a couple will get damaged. At best, they'll bring a lot of fun and pleasure as they bundle around being princes and princesses.

I'm more ruthless about taking a rain check on things I don't fancy doing!

This is such a luxury isn't it? I used to be a real duty first/ people pleaser but have recently decided to just do what nourishes me and the difference is AMAZING

bastardlyandmutley · 09/10/2018 16:37

I was nodding my head at everything you said. I am guilty of saving things for a worthy moment too.

I also dress like something from the discount bin most days but yet have a wardrobe of nice(er) clothes, often with their tags still on. The times I have charity shopped barely worn clothes is unreal. I also eat a lot of slightly out of date chocolate and treats because I've been "saving them". I also don't wear my jewellery in case I break it. No it is much better for it to fester getting discoloured in a drawer!

After looking at scented candles to buy for Christmas I took the big decision to actually burn (shock, horror) some of the ones I already have and just religiously dust each week. Baby steps!

I love all these stories. It's not just about saving things for best though (which I am prone to and am determined to change as soon as this renovation is done and we finally get round to unpacking boxes of previously 'good china') - My mum's old purple fleece I bought her for Christmas 1998 is now my cosy gardening jacket. I just can't throw it out and it's too tatty to wear out so I wear it every day in the garden, which makes me happy.

I'm looking forward to using my Grandma's best china on a daily basis, and her amazing quality monogrammed cotton sheets, still wrapped in faded brown paper. Two generations later they will be used!

goldinthemtherestars · 09/10/2018 17:30

I never burn scented candles either, they just sit about the place looking full of potential. I will light one tonight. :)

So today I bit a diamond.

I was pouring peanuts into my mouth and one fell on my chest. I grabbed it and tossed it in my mouth... Except it wasn't a peanut - it was indeed my diamond pendant. Grin

I used to be guilty of this. When we moved to our present house- much smaller than our previous one- we couldn't store both the good stuff and the day-to-day stuff so the latter had to go. We have moved about 6 times and are about to again. We have been bought champagne by various people every time we've moved which we've saved for 'an occasion'. I've decided that we will have a champagne cocktail party as a housewarming this time! Whilst burning my posh candles!

Crusoe · 09/10/2018 18:17

You are so right OP and I wish I could get in the right mindset to use all my best things. I have a fear of ruining that beautiful jumper or not being able to replace that lovely dish that stops me using things. It’s so daft. Definitely something to work on.

@Moonflower12 Love this, how was it?
