To really hate polo shirts on men

Just that really. Maybe it's because I associate polos with primary age children or usually those wearing polos are the overly loud groups in the pub. I can just about tolerate polo shirts for those playing golf/watersports but that's about it.

I've been seeing a guy for around 6/7 months and a polo shirt is his staple wardrobe with t-shirts. He's also the only male in the office who wears a polo over a shirt. He's now mentioned that in the winter he has a few blazers to go over his polos and that's the final straw for me. I know I can't tell him how much I hate them but if I didn't love him I would have finished it because of his style long ago.

I'm very prepared to get flamed over this - I just needed to vent.

It's nice that you love him and know you can't tell him what to wear :-)

You'll get used to them, black polo shirts are nicer than white I think.

MrsStrowman · 01/10/2018 08:43

Think about if this were him on here complaining about how you dress... As long as he's clean, it's up to him what he wears, he has the right to feel comfortable. I'm assuming he wore polos when you got together with him? You clearly didn't mind then

Dazedandconfused1988 · 01/10/2018 08:45

I guess you’re neither reasonable or unreasonable, because you know you can’t stop him wearing them.
I have no strong opinions on polo shirts at all.
I’m sure you will get used to it?

scaryteacher · 01/10/2018 08:58

Dh has several polo shirts from his sailing days, that I have filched and wear with jeans, as I don't like T shirts. I like them as they are heavier material than a T shirt, wash and dry well, and can be dressed up or down.

Do you tolerate polo shirts for polo players?

Trills · 01/10/2018 09:00

Please explain how one wears a polo OVER a shirt?

Are we talking about a weird Steve Bannon multiple-collar thing?

19lottie82 · 01/10/2018 09:06

I don’t get the polo shirt over a shirt thing either? I have never seen anyone wearing this. Are we taking about the same things?

That aside polo shirts are perfectly acceptable. I wouldn’t expect grown men to wear t shirts or formal shirts all the time. I’d say they are go to wear for most men over 25.

AmericanEskimoDoge · 01/10/2018 09:08

He might not notice or take the hint, but if he ever wears something other than the polo shirts, you could make a point of complimenting him on how handsome and appealing he looks that day. You wouldn't be brutally telling him you don't like his usual wardrobe, but rather just letting him know that you think that button-up shirts (or whatever it might be) really suit him.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 01/10/2018 09:08

Please explain how one wears a polo OVER a shirt?

I was confused by this too, trills. I was imaging a button up with a polo pulled over the top

But i think Op means the man prefers a polo over a shirt, ie if theres a choice he wears a polo rather than a button up

overnightangel · 01/10/2018 09:09

I’m sure you’re a veritable style icon @Auntieaunt
What do you wear?

Sparklesocks · 01/10/2018 09:12

I don’t mind them, generally I think people should be able to wear what they like and feel comfortable in. Do you mean he literally wears a polo AS WELL as his shirt, as in on top of it, or instead of?
If it’s truly an issue for you and you can’t get past it then I suppose you need to do what you need to do. But if he’s kind, sweet and attentive and that’s the only flaw you find with him it seems extreme to dump someone over the top they wear.
Unless of course you aren’t happy and are finding fault to justify ending it?

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 01/10/2018 09:16

Well its a thing apparently

Although i'd call what this mans wearing more of a rugby style top or a sweater

I was imaging a tight short polo shirt like tenis or golf players wear over the top of a button up and only reaching the midrift

To really hate polo shirts on men
Omgoap · 01/10/2018 09:16

You could get him some new tops for Xmas 😂😂 Hope he gets the hint

Locandi · 01/10/2018 09:17

Yes they’re awful. Especially when they’re worn with the collars popped up, it’s so wanky.

UrsulaPandress · 01/10/2018 09:19

DH wears a polo shirt over a t shirt when it is cold.

serbska · 01/10/2018 09:25

Oh I actually don't mind men in polo shirts. Looks relaxed and also smart. If they are nice polo shirts. Probably not if they are £3.99 white ones from Tesco.

sparklewater · 01/10/2018 09:25

I hate them too. Can't explain why. My partner used to have to wear one as part of his work uniform and I could just about stand that.

owabno · 01/10/2018 09:27

Interesting how you make the connection between polo shorts and primary school. Are you aware lots of primary schools also wear white shirts? Why does that not have the same effect

ShatnersBassoon · 01/10/2018 09:31

They look better on older men than t-shirts, slightly smarter and less clingy fabric. Collar up is obviously unacceptable, and not the awful ones with applique numbers etc on, but completely inoffensive otherwise.

BusterGonad · 01/10/2018 09:38

I'm not keen on them either, especially if they are Ralph Lauren ones!

PlinkPlink · 01/10/2018 09:42

@trills 😂😂😂 your post made me laugh. I did wonder myself.

How on earth do you wear a polo shirt over a shirt? Surely that's just collar chaos? Which one goes on top?

Also a polo shirt and a blazer?! What? Why? You can't do that? Where does the collar go?! Blazer and shirt yes... blazer and polo? What the hell?

PenCreed · 01/10/2018 10:08

Depends on the fabric. DH used to wear them all the time, in that heavier fabric that reminds me of uniforms, but he also had some softer ones which were much nicer. I have persuaded him that he looks much nicer in a casual shirt and now he rarely wears the polo shirts. I outright asked him not to wear a particular colour that didn’t suit him and I really disliked, so it is possible to talk about it!
If he hated something I wore, I’d consider his opinions on it too. He’s a lot less picky than I am though, and likes me in pretty much anything.

19lottie82 · 01/10/2018 10:19

I’d class the photo as a rugby style shirt, not a polo shirt (although I guess it technically is a polo shirt Grin)

NC4Now · 01/10/2018 10:22

I quite fancy men in polo shirts.

madmother1 · 01/10/2018 10:26

I love my DP on his Ralph Lauren ones 😁

sparkles212 · 01/10/2018 10:35

My OH wears them for work rather than shirts. I often wonder how he gets away with it (we work at the same place) but he's in IT and is constantly crawling under desks etc. to fix computers so I can see why he wouldn't want to dress smarter when he gets covered in dust all the time.

He does wear smarter polos sometimes when we go out particularly on holiday, though he does wear shirts a lot too. I quite like him in the smart ones.

You are sort of BU but I accept we all have personal tastes! At least he's not dressing in manky trackies for dates 😂
