To really hate polo shirts on men

Auntieaunt · 01/10/2018 08:37

Just that really. Maybe it's because I associate polos with primary age children or usually those wearing polos are the overly loud groups in the pub. I can just about tolerate polo shirts for those playing golf/watersports but that's about it.

I've been seeing a guy for around 6/7 months and a polo shirt is his staple wardrobe with t-shirts. He's also the only male in the office who wears a polo over a shirt. He's now mentioned that in the winter he has a few blazers to go over his polos and that's the final straw for me. I know I can't tell him how much I hate them but if I didn't love him I would have finished it because of his style long ago.

I'm very prepared to get flamed over this - I just needed to vent.

I like OH in polo shirts, though he has some very nice ones.

He aqquired a Lacoste one from DS..now 20 years old and still looks as good as it did new, no fading the collar still looks fresh. And he looks sexy as in it

QuantumGroan · 02/10/2018 18:44

Dh looks better in a polo shirt, than a t-shirt, so I have given way - no brand symbols though or standy up collars - either would signal divorce. Worse would be deck shoes - the are vile and slip on loafers on men over 25. Slip on deck shoes - I'm almost sick at the thought! And those very long toed shoes that lots of young men seem to wear - God they are bloody awful!

QuantumGroan · 02/10/2018 18:46

He wears skinny dark suits, skinny knitted ties and brown brogues, which with all the skinniness, look like skis. I bet he looks dead trendy!

missyB1 · 02/10/2018 18:59

They are the staple of my dh’s wardrobe! I think he looks sexy in them, he was a rugby player for many years, off pitch most of them wore polo shirts and he’s just carried on.
Would much rather see a polo shirt than a horrible slogan or cartoon T shirt.

StoneofDestiny · 02/10/2018 19:11

Ugh to signet rings, chains round the neck, shorts with tattooed legs in winter, cartoon tops or cartoon ties (boak) or football tops on adults not at a football match or built up trainers when not in training.

Polo shirts ok with chinos

akkakk · 02/10/2018 19:28

mmm - some interesting taste here :)
I am male - am currently wearing a polo shirt / suede loafers and a signet ring!

The signet ring is my family crest which dates back 600+ years
I used to play polo, so presumably am allowed to wear polo shirts?
The suede loafers are brilliant driving shoes and smart and comfortable...

and as it is my choice, I am not all that bothered by what others think! :) If someone were to dump me because of any of those, then I would consider it better to be aware of that early on rather than not finding out about that person until later, and would definitely consider it an issue with them, not me...

ConcreteUnderpants · 02/10/2018 19:34

akkakk what is the position of your collar?

(Agreeing with PP who said upturned was 'wanky')

ConcreteUnderpants · 02/10/2018 19:36

Btw, now i think about ut, i prefer men in polo shirts to t shirts.
Without the wanky collar, obviously.

Goldenbug · 02/10/2018 19:38

Polo shirts seem to the the default uniform of my profession. To me they mean work so I would never wear them outside of work.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 02/10/2018 19:38

cementpointing · 02/10/2018 19:39

in summer, the ralph lauren polo shirts, ray bans and rust/mustard slim chino shorts game is strong where i live!!

Aaaahfuck · 02/10/2018 19:44

I think they can be worn in a lads on the lash style way which is not a great look. Or in a more smart casual way especially if the materials is a textured knit or something similar. Not just a white sports style one.

OnceUponATimeInAmerica · 02/10/2018 19:45

Polo shirts are much better than misshapen t-shirts. (Yes, DH, I do mean most of your t-shirts). Over a certain age, which I haven't quite defined yet, I do think men look better with a collar. But, I would never insist to DH, as otherwise I'd have to dispose of about 90% of his wardrobe.

StoneofDestiny · 02/10/2018 19:51

AKkAKK
You can of course wear what you want! Like you, I wouldn't give two figs as to what others thought about what I wear. However - this thread is about opinions and views, so they are being shared. I guess wearing a family crest on a signet ring is the equivalent of tattoos with family names on the body (only less painful). Still, I often wonder why people need to engrave their pride and joy on anything. 🧐

NotUmbongoUnchained · 02/10/2018 19:57

I got into an altercation yesterday with a man in a bright pink polo shirt tucked into his shorts and braces on. I told him I’m not about to stand there and argue with a man dressed as a fucking toddler. He looked ridiculous!

OrangeKettle · 02/10/2018 19:58

Even worse is star trek / wars / whatever it is t-shirts.

Thesearmsofmine · 02/10/2018 19:59

Polo shirts remind me of my dad. Ok on older men but I find them really unattractive on younger men.

StoneofDestiny · 02/10/2018 20:20

NotUmbogo
To be fair ~ that is an extreme case of ridiculousness

NotUmbongoUnchained · 02/10/2018 20:21

Is it? I’m seeing more and more men dressed like it! Usually accompanied by shoes with no socks and an orange fake tan.

Mummysharkdoodoodoo · 02/10/2018 20:23

Dh only wears Fred Perry’s. I think he would look stupid in a tshirt. And who wants to wear a shirt every day 🙈

😂

CheshireChat · 02/10/2018 20:31

Yes, other people to share the polo shirt hate, this and tracksuit bottoms are the only two pieces of clothing that make my teeth itch!

Obviously, I'm not the fashion police so wouldn't ever comment unless someone asks for my opinion.

harrietthehare · 02/10/2018 20:33

akkak you sound just like my husband and he is well fit - your name isn't Neil is it? If so see you for a late supper :)

bungaloid · 02/10/2018 20:37

What other top can a man wear though for a general daytime casual-ish thing? I am a man and my wardrobe seems to have moved towards way too many similar polo shirts, which aggravates me. T-shirts are fine but other than that what are the choices in average to warm climate?!

sexnotgender · 02/10/2018 20:42

Don’t mind polo shirts as long as the collar isn’t up.

They are infinitely preferable to the v neck of doom.
