To really hate polo shirts on men

Auntieaunt · 01/10/2018 08:37

Just that really. Maybe it's because I associate polos with primary age children or usually those wearing polos are the overly loud groups in the pub. I can just about tolerate polo shirts for those playing golf/watersports but that's about it.

I've been seeing a guy for around 6/7 months and a polo shirt is his staple wardrobe with t-shirts. He's also the only male in the office who wears a polo over a shirt. He's now mentioned that in the winter he has a few blazers to go over his polos and that's the final straw for me. I know I can't tell him how much I hate them but if I didn't love him I would have finished it because of his style long ago.

I'm very prepared to get flamed over this - I just needed to vent.

Ralph Lauren is definitely acceptable for a polo. I have one of my own too. Probably makes me biased.
They're really nice.

But if you're talking a Fruits of the Loom type of polo... not so keen Grin

StoneofDestiny · 01/10/2018 19:53

I like guys in nice polo shirts. Golfers wear them routinely and as casual wear they are smarter than t shirts.

sunshineandshowers21 · 01/10/2018 20:06

my boyfriend lives in polo shirts when he’s not at work. he’s got dozens of ralph lauren ones in every colour of the rainbow! i think he looks pretty fit in them tbh. though if they weren’t designer i’d probably think they were a bit naff... it’s amazing what a tiny logo can do.

butlerswharf · 01/10/2018 20:18

I like them

pinkdelight · 01/10/2018 20:23

Yanbu, I detest them too. To the point of phobic almost. Any dp would have to bin them. I appreciate that's extreme but it's true. Don't mess with a nice plain tee. Ugh.

Sweetpea55 · 01/10/2018 20:25

Fuffung awful things..Especially when they insist on turning the collar up. What's that all about...you don't look trendy..you look twatty

Oblomov18 · 01/10/2018 20:26

I like them. Dh has lots.

CoughLaughFart · 01/10/2018 20:42

The nice part of me wants to say it’s none of your business and you shouldn’t care that much about what your partner wears. But the rest of me agrees with you - I hate the things Grin

MinecraftHolmes · 01/10/2018 20:46

There’s polo shirts and there’s polo shirts. DH has some in plain colours that look good because they’re nicely cut, fit him well and they’re not big baggy/boxy efforts like kids school ones.

MargaretDribble · 01/10/2018 20:51

DH looks ok in them. He has quite a few from Cotton Traders, which might give you an idea of his age.Grin

EdWinchester · 01/10/2018 20:55

I am not keen.

My dh had one on with a hoodie the other day and it was such a tragic combo, I had to make him change, even though he was only mowing the lawn Grin

I also have a theory that men over 40 need a collar, so it's all a bit of a minefield.

Sarcelle · 01/10/2018 20:55

I don’t mind them, but not with upturned collars. Or worn with scuffed suede Gucci loafers and shorts, which a lot of Hoorays think is just the ticket. Used to see that a lot in Chiswick, and still seen in a lot of Surrey!

TroysMammy · 01/10/2018 21:01

I'd rather a polo shirt than God awful baggy grey jogging bottoms. I would dump someone smartish if they turned up in those no matter how much I loved them.

Stupomax · 01/10/2018 21:18

I feel the same way about tan shoes with suits that have skinny trousers.

In 10 years time a lot of people are going to look back on their wedding photos and cringe.

madcatladyforever · 01/10/2018 21:19

Nothing like a polo shirt and a pair of shapeless shorts - vile.

AlphaJuno · 01/10/2018 21:26

I don't like them. Luckily not does my dp. He's a builder so lives in t shirts. People have different tastes though. You can't tell him what to wear but it depends on whether you can live with someone who has a different style to you. Style is more important to some people than others. I'd rather be with someone who wore things I liked (without telling him what to wear of course) rather than secretly detesting something they had a habit of wearing.

wink1970 · 01/10/2018 21:26

It’s probably generational. DH is 56 and his weekend ‘uniform’ is RL polos tucked into Jeans. It suits him, is flattering to his shape, he feels good, which makes me happy.

topcat2014 · 01/10/2018 21:27

@Edwinchester - I agree, I am over 40 47 and only wear a T shirt when running.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 01/10/2018 21:32

There is no more effective prophylactic than a polo shirt. Except possibly a gilet.

ShatnersBassoon · 01/10/2018 22:34

I'll have to disagree. It's a punny Weird Fish t-shirt. They're designed to desiccate the female undercarriage.

pictish · 01/10/2018 22:36

Yuck I think they’re bloody awful. I have never been attracted to a man wearing one.
The worst is when they tuck it into their jeans and seal the deal with a belt.
Urrgghh.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 02/10/2018 17:54

Signet rings. Deck shoes. Football shirts. Confused

Princess1066 · 02/10/2018 18:07

@Stupomax

Yes yes yes - skinny navy suits and tan shoes - yuk - so naf imo (tin hat at the ready)

EdWinchester · 02/10/2018 18:22

My 16 year old has delightedly joined the 6th form where he has to wear a suit.

He wears skinny dark suits, skinny knitted ties and brown brogues, which with all the skinniness, look like skis.

He looks very dapper, although a bit like an Essex lad at a naff wedding 😂

camelfinger · 02/10/2018 18:26

What are they allowed to wear?
