To really hate polo shirts on men

Just that really. Maybe it's because I associate polos with primary age children or usually those wearing polos are the overly loud groups in the pub. I can just about tolerate polo shirts for those playing golf/watersports but that's about it.

I've been seeing a guy for around 6/7 months and a polo shirt is his staple wardrobe with t-shirts. He's also the only male in the office who wears a polo over a shirt. He's now mentioned that in the winter he has a few blazers to go over his polos and that's the final straw for me. I know I can't tell him how much I hate them but if I didn't love him I would have finished it because of his style long ago.

I'm very prepared to get flamed over this - I just needed to vent.

Eek - you need to move areas!

Enb76 · 02/10/2018 20:54

I don’t mind a polo neck. Saw someone recently in what looked like a tan tracksuit suit - now that was fairly horrific.

FeetusDeletus · 02/10/2018 21:09

I think polo shirts are good once you get used to them, my ex DH had a polo shirt and it really brought out the sheen in his slicked back hair. His favourite passtime was to stand in front of the mirror and pretend he was a professional polo player, but living in east sussex the only polos he got was from the sainsburys down the road. One of the best things about polo shirts is you dont have to change them too often as they tend to stay pretty clean especially when DH lathers on the Tom Ford to the point of smelling like pure gasoline. Come to think of it, the clocks changed more than he did, but don't let it get to that extreme Blush. Me and DH ended up parting ways after i discovered he was a raging conservative and had a fetish for school plimsolls

Moussemoose · 02/10/2018 21:12

Polo shirts, tan shoes hideous.

Screamqueenz · 02/10/2018 21:16

I prefer men in a collar, so polo shirts are fine as far as I'm concerned.
But we all have different tastes.

FarrahMoan · 02/10/2018 21:20

I hate them. Fortunately DH (36) hates them too. I'm reminded of the late 90's when exH used to wear one with straight leg jeans and brown shoes. Urgh

happymummy12345 · 02/10/2018 21:27

I hate them full stop, on anyone.
My son has to wear them to nursery now as he has gone up to the pre school room, and they have to wear uniform there.
I'd love him to go to a primary school where they don't wear them. (Though would NEVER choose a school primarily for the uniform of course). Luckily in our nearest one, it's only the infants who wear them. From juniors they wear proper shirts, ties and jumpers, with blazer for the final two years). I'd be over the moon with that.

StrawberrySquash · 02/10/2018 21:28

YANBU, they just don't look that good. I find a lot of blokes at work wear them because they are supposed to wear a collar and it's less faff than shirts I guess. Doesn't mean I have to think it looks good. Too preppy and too uniformy.

QuantumGroan · 02/10/2018 21:31

I hate preppy too but it has become dh's business casual uniform and it's better than a suit everyday!

DiseasesOfTheSheep · 02/10/2018 21:42

Hmm, funny how people differ on this. I'm a big fan of a polo shirt, ideally with a wanky up-turned collar. Hell, if it's not up-turned the back of your neck gets burned when you're on the pitch all day in summer. I do play a bit of polo though, so maybe I'm just normalised to the sight of men in them.

Possibly less excusable is the fact that I also enjoy a good nerdy Star Trek t-shirt on a chap Grin

AlphaJuno · 02/10/2018 23:08

@quantumgroan haha 😂 I agree loafers are vile 🤮. I couldn't be with someone who wore them.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 02/10/2018 23:29

Polos are my usual non-work attire - I currently have five Fred Perry, one Ralph Lauren, and a couple from M&S.

NC4Now · 02/10/2018 23:30

To be fair, I’m a bit of a 90s throwback in the style stakes. I also love a man in Adidas Gazelles.

harrietthehare - nope not your husband, but I should have checked earlier - what was on offer for dinner?! :)

Collar can be up or down depending on sunshine (stops sunburn when on said horse)

I think that playing polo and wearing a polo shirt must be okay - you really don’t want me with no polo shirt, it will just distract you from your pimms!

Signet ring - really not the equivalent of a tattoo - used not surprisingly for sealing things / imprinting the family crest in sealing wax - it is a legal identity and has been for centuries - heavy gold ring properly engraved intaglio - buggers up the Royal Mail system something rotten when you send letters with sealing wax in the back! :)

Adidas Gazelles - now you're talking Wink

Princess1066 · 03/10/2018 00:35

@EdWinchester

Bahahaha - Essex lad at a naf wedding Grin

BabySharkAteMyHamster · 03/10/2018 00:38

According to my oh youre either a round neck or a polo neck. And never the twain shall meet.

He is a roundneck and has an odd, snobby judgement on the polo ndcks.

Bloody weirdo.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 03/10/2018 01:00

Akkk are you Prince Charles per chance? Grin

akkakk · 03/10/2018 01:45

Akkk are you Prince Charles per chance?

Nope much younger :) but there might be some connections (and no I am not Harry / Wills either :) ) they are all much better at polo!

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 03/10/2018 01:55

I like a polo shirt on a man; but Ralph Lauren, open neck; collar up is good.

Do not like lacoste, buttoned to the neck and collar dow. Round necked Tshirts; fine for the beach

Other acceptable summer shirts; button down or linen with.long sleeves rolled back to elbow. Short sleeves. No.

dontticklethetoad · 03/10/2018 02:21

My husband's head is too big to wear collarless t-shirts. He wears polo shirts (although not airtex ones) for general casual.
He is very fussy about shirts though and will only wear double cuffs for work. His pet hate is short sleeve work shirts, especially with ties.
