To only pay for vegan food at my wedding?

ClaraBanana7 · 21/09/2018 14:52

Haven't set a date yet, but it'll be in around 2 years so it's not right around the corner or anything, but DP and I are both vegans. Neither of us have a problem with other people eating animal products, I don't think I've ever even brought up veganism unless I'm at a restaurant and need to order because I really hate confrontation and I've seen/heard so many cruel and horrible things being said to vegans. That said, we don't want to pay for the guests to be served animal products at our wedding.
Some of my friends think it's unfair and that restaurants etc are pandering to the vegan 'fad' (even though I've been vegan all my life) so I should cater to everyone's dietary requirements. I told them I was considering putting a meat option on the catering form, but that whoever picked it would have to pay for it themselves as I really don't want to give my own money towards that industry. But, my friends also think it's unfair that some people have to pay and others don't.
DP doesn't want to have an animal product option at all, and tbh I would also prefer this, but I want a way of not isolating people who can't go a meal without eating animal products.

On a side note, this isn't true.

For example, the lack of dairy will catch up with you in your old age via Osteoporosis.

CheeseTheDay · 22/09/2018 14:17

Salem - the British Dietetic Association, you know the nutritional health and science experts who are actually qualified to have an opinion on this, say that a well balanced vegan diet is adequate AND healthy for humans. My SIL informed me of this, and she's a registered dietician, so she would know. Therefore the science is clear, veganism is healthy.

Now yes, of course, vegans are likely to need supplements. However, I very much doubt every single omnivore on the planet, is also getting all the nutrients they need from their food.

abacucat · 22/09/2018 14:20

Yes you can buy white sugar that is vegan. But it will tell you. Some brown sugar is vegan, some is not.
And I don't agree that a vegan diet is more healthy. Eating more fruit and veg is healthy, but eating fish is very good for you and is thought to have been essential for our evolution.

SalemBlackCat · 22/09/2018 14:21

Lweji, yes, it is true. Ask any GP.

Gemini69 · 22/09/2018 14:22

well this Thread took a DARK TURN Grin

Bluelady · 22/09/2018 14:23

Nobody's health is going to suffer from eating one vegan meal, ffs. Plenty of people's health will be far better than average from eating a lifetime of vegan meals. There's no processed crap in the average vegan diet.

abacucat · 22/09/2018 14:23

Also you can be a vegan and eat a poor diet. Met vegans who have terrible diets. Eat vegan for beliefs around animal exploitation, but not to be healthier.

abacucat · 22/09/2018 14:24

There can be plenty of processed crap in the average vegan diet.

Bluelady · 22/09/2018 14:24

Dietician's views on diet trump GPs' Salem.

Bluelady · 22/09/2018 14:25

Really? What processed crap features in vegan diets? Not Greggs sausage roll, that's for sure. Examples, please.

SalemBlackCat · 22/09/2018 14:27

CheeseTheDay, the BDA that has long associations with The Vegan Society? I very much doubt they represent genuine Dietitians and GPs. The is that most GPs and health practitioners do not advocate a vegan diet. There is a reason for that. Decades and decades of health, scientific evidence, research and best practice isn't outweighed by an alliance with The Vegan Society. I trust the crushing and overwhelming evidence born of decades and decades of medical research and medical knowledge than an organisation seeking links with modern fads.

sashh · 22/09/2018 14:27

I agree with a previous poster that vegan food is sparse and unsatisfying and not suitable for people unused to the diet to eat with alcohol

Rubbish.

Soup and a roll, beans on toast, samosas, veg curry / lasagna / aubergine casserole, veg pies, rice pudding, suet puddings - not exactly light and sparse.

OK a couple of those traditionally have cheese/milk in but are just as substantial with vegan cheese / milk.

overagain · 22/09/2018 14:27

Bluelady my mum eats a fuck ton of crisps, chips and uncle Ben's microwave rice. That and home-made garlic bread (slice of cheap white bread, stork spread and crushed garlic). Her diet is far from healthy!

CheeseTheDay · 22/09/2018 14:28

There are other sources of calcium, outside of dairy, such as some varieties of seeds (examples: sesame, poppy), beans, lentils and leafy greens (examples: spinach, kale). Almonds and rhubarb are also examples of non-dairy calcium sources.

The ignorance here is astounding.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 22/09/2018 14:29

Lots of Mexican or Indian food can be made vegan very easily and be very healthy

And is delicious

I think what many people don’t like is the vegan replacements yogurt, cheese and meat

SalemBlackCat · 22/09/2018 14:29

Bluelady, someone that calls themselves a Dietician trumps a Medical Doctor who has spent years and years at university? Lol you must be having a laugh! At least, I sincerely hope so.... Confused

A Doctor will always trump a Dietician. This, goes as being read.

With the absolute greatest of respect.... Bollocks

CheeseTheDay · 22/09/2018 14:30

Salem - the BDA is the official governing body of dieticians. Only those registered with the BDA meet the educational standards to call themselves a registered dietician (RD). So only GENUINE RDs will belong to the BDA. You have just proved you don't even know what you're talking about!!

Bluelady · 22/09/2018 14:30

That's one person's unhealthy choices. My son cooks everything from scratch, has a piled plate and eats nothing processed at all.

SalemBlackCat · 22/09/2018 14:30

CheeseTheDay and it is almost impossible to get the same calcium from those, as from dairy. Darn right that the ignorance on here is astounding! However it is from those who genuinely think they are informed. rme

Johndoe10 · 22/09/2018 14:31

salam your mistaken and misinformed if you think you need dairy for your bones after the age of five, it’s just a myth that was pushed by the dairy industry in America. In fact studies show an increased risk to fractures if you consume dairy a lot. In fact we don’t need cows milk at all as it wasn’t made for us.

You do not have a genuine belief system in eating meat. You just like it.

What I don't understand, why you think your belief system trumps the belief systems of non-vegans?

I can link to many many video links of what happens to your meat whilst is still alive or how the milk is produced and the conditions they are kept in or the hormones that are pumped through it. I’ve a horrible one on baby Male chicks that have just hatched being ground to death by a cog because they are not needed. Or another one shows a pig carcass with the butcher cutting out a huge absess out of the flesh and then putting the carcass back on the line.

Vegans believe this shouldn’t be happening.

You said you find veganism abhorrant - abhorrent means -
inspiring disgust and loathing; repugnant.

You find eating a plant based diet causes all those strong feelings yet still feel fine about the way animals get slaughtered. Don’t you think it should be the other way round? Hmm

I swing from eating plant based foods to mixed but I find your loathing for eating a plant based diet bizzare

No one is asking you to eat meat/animal products, just provide it for those of us who are non-vegan

Just give me meeeeeeeeeaaat Grin

If you cannot do that, then don't expect non-vegans to cater for you. Respect. It is a two-way street

I never have and I honestly don’t think my vegan friends do either! Grin

Crazy thread!

CheeseTheDay · 22/09/2018 14:33

And yes Salem, an RD is someone who has studied nutrition at far greater depth than a doctor, it takes four years of undergraduate study, or two years of PG study if you have completed a non-dietetic science degree beforehand. I don't think most doctors study nutrition for as long as that!

SalemBlackCat · 22/09/2018 14:33

CheeseTheDay, way to miss the point! It is not who qualifies to be registered with a governing board, it is said board's 'link' with certain political/activist groups ie The Vegan Society. It really invalidates their credibility. Just because a governing body releases a statement of position, does not make it the position of every person registered with that governing body, nor is it an endorsement by all whom are registered with it.

abacucat · 22/09/2018 14:33

Veggie burgers, tofu cheese, chips, mock meat, dairy free milk, instant noodles, some crisps, oreos, vegan ice cream, vegan chocolate spread, vegan spreads, genetically modified soya, vegan pizzas, etc etc.
You don't have to eat Greggs sausage rolls to eat processed food. I have never eaten a Greggs sausage roll in my life and still eat processed foods. And some of the vegan things to replace non vegan foods, such as vegan spread replacing butter, is not as good for your health and full of processed crap.
Of course if you cook from scratch you can eat very healthy vegan food, but that is the same for carnivores.

CheeseTheDay · 22/09/2018 14:36

Salem - as the official body, they can't just make statements on a whim, they would be held accountable. But you just keep believing the BS you spout.
