Why the language change? I know it's all about being trans-inclusive. But is it really trans-exclusive if Lunette had said menstruating woman or girl?

AIBU to say I'm a menstruating woman not a menstruating person?

Women menstruate. Get over it.

Need this on a t shirt!

Beachcomber · 18/09/2018 17:03

Actual women are "menstruating people".

We are being groomed. This stuff matters because it is so pervasive now. It's a drip drip reeducation of the population into sleepwalking acceptance of a women erasing ideological and political project.

Many women may not be bothered about this particular example of genderist dogma but it is part of a bigger picture. Never was the idiom "give an inch..." so apt.

IAmLurkacus · 18/09/2018 17:06

YANBU

‘Menstrating person’ has absolutely fuck all to do with being ‘trans inclusive’ and everything to do with being misogynistic.

BrownPaperTeddy · 18/09/2018 17:08

If we aren’t a group how can we have a conversation about women’s issues, women’s rights, discrimination against women, sexual violence against women, women’s health, etc etc

Because not all women agree with the views of some women.

We aren't an homogenous group are we?

What concerns some women may not concern others and vice versa.

iamawoman · 18/09/2018 17:15

As far as I am concerned these days, if you want to opt out of your sex, you are excluding yourself from your own biological reality, so I will not be changing my language to accommodate your identity issues

HairyLittlePoet · 18/09/2018 17:18

Menstruator, and other words that rhyme with 'hate her'

if you wish to be inclusive
please amend your language usage
'woman' has now been disabled
this is how you shall be labelled:

ovulator, menstruator, gestator, incubator
procreator, lactator, child-curator, care-taker
homemaker, meal-maker, vacuum-cleaner-operator
titillator, conciliator, erotic-roleplay-stimulator

if a woman should resist
any title from this list
please ensure her full compliance
here is how to squash defiance:

moderate, invalidate, ensure that you re-educate her
irritate her, frustrate her, make sure you exasperate her
do berate her, denigrate her, obviously you castigate her
deprecate her, do deflate her, tell her you depreciate her

dominate, humiliate, and certainly manipulate her
subjugate, domesticate, and if you can, you abnegate her
penetrate her, impregnate her, all her life administrate her
regulate, incarcerate, and you shall incapacitate her

violate her, desecrate her, let your actions devastate her
decorate her, mutilate her, crush her and debilitate her
obviate, excoriate, and with your words eviscerate her
decimate, intimidate, until you can subordinate her

designate her, emulate her, mimic her and obfuscate her
appropriate, adulterate, mock and then impersonate her
exterminate, obliterate, and finally annihilate her
disintegrate, evaporate, replace and then eradicate her

just negate her
just negate her
just negate her

hate her

Her0utdoors · 18/09/2018 17:22

Enthusiasm , it's already happened. There's product called something like Pink Parcel that uses an transman ( who according to the publicity bumpf hasn't had a period for 4 years) to front their advertising. It's a subscription that sends out menstrual products ( about 25% of the contents) plus make-up and chocolate. Make of that what you will.

Helmetbymidnight · 18/09/2018 17:23

Because not all women agree with the views of some women

Eh?

It’s not about agreeing with views or opinions at all.

Women are a grouping based on biological fact. Just as humans are not horses and children are not pensioners. You may think ‘oh I’m not like them I don’t agree with them’ but suck it up, that’s what women are. They have a different biology to men.

They menstruate. Men don’t.

Elephantinacravat · 18/09/2018 17:36

Because not all women agree with the views of some women

That's not the point.

The point is that once the word 'woman' becomes meaningless, it will be impossible to discuss women’s issues, women’s rights, discrimination against women, sexual violence against women, women’s health.

What will 'women's health' mean when some women have prostates and some men have wombs and periods?

What will 'discrimination against women' mean when some women are actually men? What happens when the gender pay gap starts to close because people like Pips Bunce get top jobs and it means that more 'women' are making it to the top?

How will we solve the problem of violence against women, when more and more perpetrators of violence are 'women' and more and more victims of violence are 'men'? Will that mean the problem has disappeared by itself? That its no longer worthy of discussion?

Words matter. Language matters. It doesn't matter if women all agree on all the issues. If we lose the language there won't be any issues to discuss anyway.

PositivelyPERF · 18/09/2018 17:37

You're fine to call yourself a menstruating woman, but it doesn't affect your life if other people say 'menstruating person‘

You’re fine to call yourself a menstruating person, but you don’t have the right to force your ideology on WOMEN who have no wish to have their descriptive identity erased.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 18/09/2018 17:50

HairyLittlePoet that's brilliant! Star

And that's such a well argued explanation of the importance and relevance of linguistic accuracy, Elephantinacravat. I've seen some great posts the last couple of days.

Crumpledandcreased · 18/09/2018 17:52

I am a person and also a woman. I would not be upset to be referred to as either.

I know a young transgender person who would prefer not to be referred to as a woman who menstruates. As we are all people, using 'menstruating person' makes sense and causes no harm. It's not as though anyone is unaware of the physiology required for mentruation, does is really need the word woman attached?!

Beachcomber · 18/09/2018 17:54

@HairyLittlePoet

Wow!

Elephantinacravat · 18/09/2018 17:55

I am a person and also a woman. I would not be upset to be referred to as either.

I know a young transgender person who would prefer not to be referred to as a woman who menstruates.

Well that's all well and good, but 'people who menstruate does upset many women and make them feel like they are being erased. Why are their feelings less important than yours or that of a trans person?

MiddlingMum · 18/09/2018 17:57

I'm hoping that society will grow out of all this nonsense, in the same way it grew out of extreme prudishness in the Victorian age. It's just a silly phase that some people are going through.

Crumpledandcreased · 18/09/2018 18:01

I suppose I just thinks it's strange to be offended by being referred to as a person!

Helmetbymidnight · 18/09/2018 18:05

I suppose I just thinks it's strange to be offended by being referred to as a person!

Really? You struggle with understanding that yet think its perfectly fine for your friend is not only offended by being referred to as a woman but would like us all not to be referred to as women.

That's curious.

Elephantinacravat · 18/09/2018 18:06

I suppose I just thinks it's strange to be offended by being referred to as a person!

Well I think it's strange that someone who is female would be offended by being called 'she' or someone who is male would be offended by being called 'he' but here we are. Different strokes and all that.

IAmLurkacus · 18/09/2018 18:07

HairyLittlePoet Star

Juells · 18/09/2018 18:08

I'm not offended really. I'm annoyed.

Chrisinthemorning · 18/09/2018 18:09

YANBU because only women menstruate. Men can’t menstruate.
This is simple Biology.

Crumpledandcreased · 18/09/2018 18:19

Elephantinacravat - I'm curious, do you not believe that a woman can feel that they they want to be a man?

YeTalkShiteHen · 18/09/2018 18:21

‘Menstrating person’ has absolutely fuck all to do with being ‘trans inclusive’ and everything to do with being misogynistic

This. I’m hormonal, pissed off, menstruating and sick to the back teeth of this fucking self indulgent bullshit.

FunSponges · 18/09/2018 18:22

YANBU. Only biological women menstruate. Facts are facts.

I attended a work training day. The term pregnant person was used. I was not amused. Only women can be pregnant (despite the apparent world's first pregnant man, that was still biologically female).

IfNotNowThenWhen1 · 18/09/2018 18:23

It doesn’t bother me in the least but then again I’m not insecure about my own identity.
I don't have an "identity" but I do have a sex.
Off topic but it's funny that the man who wrote Only Women Bleed is called Alice. Grin
