Parents doing all this in after swim class showers?

Whirlwindheadache · 13/09/2018 20:56

OK,today after ds swim class the showers were crammed. As usual. Tbh I usually wait til we get home and do a proper shower/ bath. however today I thought I'd quickly shower him to save me doing it later. There were children in there with parents stood outside loaded with shampoos...conditioners ( telling them to leave it on at least 2minutes) body washes...rinsing and generally taking their time despite huge queues of dripping children and parents waiting for their turn..

and go home and then give them a bath/shower.

A child old enough for organised swimming lessons is old enough to be showering themselves.

dentydown · 14/09/2018 06:26

We had to do this when we went on holidays at my nans. She wouldn’t let me and my mother have a bath/shower. We had to go swimming then wash our hair there! I was a typical teenager and used conditioner and shampoo as well.
If the lessons are funded, they could be saving money on water.

MazDazzle · 14/09/2018 06:48

Organised swimming lessons here start at age 4. My kids wouldn’t have been able to wash their own hair at that age.

Whirlwindheadache · 14/09/2018 07:00

Again I'm stressing on the length of time they spent. Hogging the cubicles..that can't be shared whilst shampooing. I usually go home and do it it's that horrendous, even though that's extra hassle. Swimming lessons are not a new thing and what parent do you know that leaves their young child to get sorted on their own after swimming? These lessons are at 4 pm too. So it's not a matter of life and death they need a complete full shower. Il think twice before doing a thread...people just like say UABU for arguments sake...

I've got two excema kids. A quick rinse and then lots of cream when out of the shower and back in the changing room.

Satsumaeater · 14/09/2018 07:58

Superdrug does a really good all in one shampoo/conditioner/shower gel. About £2.50 and lasts eons. Superdrug don't test on animals either so another bonus.

Get under shower, put on body and hair. Rinse. Done. I'm in and out of the swimming pool shower in less than 2 minutes and don't need to shower again when I get home.

I don't have any skin conditions though. However, I think if I did, I'd still shower at home properly rather than spending 10-15 minutes doing it at the pool (however it depends on severity, but I don't think that most kids have eczema that bad).

Miladymilord · 14/09/2018 08:01

The boots sun swim gym one is good and doesn't exacerbate dds excema

delilahswishes · 14/09/2018 08:03

Yabu. I always wash, condition my DDs hair after swimming. Leaving chlorine on is quite bad for it and her hair is so ratty and dry if left!

Honflyr · 14/09/2018 08:04

YANBU

Nobody at Dads swim classes used shampoo/conditioner/body-wash. There were no showers in the changing room, only some comnuncak ones for both men and women by the side of the swimming-pool, in the open. Everyone would get out the pool and go and rinse, still in costumes. Then go and get dried and changed.

Proper shower at home.

Honflyr · 14/09/2018 08:05

This was with one year olds at the lessons.

shockedballoon · 14/09/2018 08:08

After lesson swimming changing rooms are hell on earth. When DS was younger and needed a bit of help/prompting, I didn't even bother with a shower rinse, just towelled down, dressed and straight home to shower. Now he's 8 and does it himself, I highly doubt he even towels himself down properly, but as I get to sit in the viewing gallery waiting for him and reading a book I find I don't really mind... In the hot summer he didn't even change out his trunks, just sat on a folded towel in the car Grin

shockedballoon · 14/09/2018 08:09

That was supposed to be Grin not Gin

shockedballoon · 14/09/2018 08:10

Ok. So grin and gin seem to give the same emoji on this!

Sickoffamilydrama

Have you considered a swimming cap?

WhatchaMaCalllit · 14/09/2018 08:32

In relation to the image you've posted Sickoffamilydrama, do you tie your child's hair back in a ponytail or bunch and a bun before doing the swimming?
My daughter used to come out of swimming with her hair similar to that in the picture if I hadn't tied it up and into a swim hat, and I mean like Sade in a ponytail, really slicked back.
After the swim when we would get home we would put the conditioner in her hair first and after rinsing that out, we'd use the shampoo.
Some of the sprays that you can buy will also help reduce the tangles like the ones specific for swimming in the sea/pools.

MrsDrSpencerReid · 14/09/2018 08:38

DD takes a swim fitness class then takes herself off to the showers to shampoo her hair etc, while DS does his lesson. I just dry him and chuck a dressing gown and slippers on him and he has a shower at home.

Isitmybathtimeyet · 14/09/2018 08:50

We don't shower the kids after swimming at all. They've always learned in pools with low/no chlorine and we just dry and dress them. So do almost all the other parents. Sometimes we put them straight into their pyjamas or onesies.

Whirlwindheadache · 14/09/2018 09:28

A few still missing the point here. I AM NOT saying DONT SHOWER after swimming otherwise why would I have been there waiting... I'm saying STOP BEING SO DAMN RUDE and be aware it's not just you waiting whilst your faffing around. This wasn't showering away chlorine from excema skin anyway...it was overly doing the full shower routine when it's not really doable in there. if they had skin complaints they wouldnt have been dousing the kids in all the shampoo and shower gel which they were doing. They were using high Street products and I know as my child had excema years ago this is not what to do as she had to use a special emollient from the docs. It's clear we all have different views in this anyway which is all I was wondering about in the first instance

So you're not saying dont' shower you're just saying don't wash your hair or use soap....which is what most people would call showering. Hmm

Look if where you go for lessons is so bad, go somewhere else. It sounds like you have far too many kids to a class and far too few showers. I live in the arse end of nowhere and the only place is a small hotel gym/pool, and we even we don't have such problems. 8 showers, max 12 kids per lesson, everyone can shower properly.

Miladymilord · 14/09/2018 09:37

No, she's saying don't spend 5 minutes conditioning and using various body washes. Just a quick wash and out you get.

Whirlwindheadache · 14/09/2018 09:40

THANKYOU miladymilord. At last! You understand what I'm getting at. Exactly my point. A quick shower over and done!!

Depends on the degree of eczema. My dd wasn't bad. We kept it under control with a natural calendula balm. However, a delay in washing (we used normal products) after swimming meant a flare up. So she always has a proper shower after swimming.

That said, I fully agree with you that some people just faff about, completely oblivious to the fact there are people waiting.

I think it's perfectly reasonable to have a full shower with shampoo and conditioner. However, it's unreasonable not to go as quickly as possible and, depending on the setup, let others use the water while you're soaping up etc.

TheWinterofOurDiscountTentsMk2 · 14/09/2018 09:45

Well since nobody put her in charge of who can do what in a shower, she should wind her neck in.
When people swim, they shower afterwards. When they shower, they wash themselves, wash and condition their hair. This is perfectly normal behaviour to anyone other than entitled MN'ers who seem to think the world runs for their convenience. Aw, your little diddums had to wait 4 mins for a shower? Bless, how did they survive? Hmm

TheWinterofOurDiscountTentsMk2 · 14/09/2018 09:46

and again, nobody uses "various body washes". Exaggerating only makes your point more ridiculous.

Miladymilord · 14/09/2018 09:47

Wear a swim hat. Use an all in one shampoo and body wash. They are kids, they don't need conditioner and a blow dry. They aren't going straight on to present the news fgs.
