To wonder what MN posters are like in real life...

I can’t help but see so many posters put others down to make themselves feel better. I had it harder, I’m better than you blah blah blah.

Are these people actually this vile in real life or is it all a keyboard warrior act?

Please!! Tell me what my name says about me then!!! This is fun....

It sounds cheerfully optimistic.

There was a 'describe a poster based on their NN' a few years ago. I might've been using a different one then, but someone correctly asserted I owned a dachshund, though wire-haired not smooth iirc.Grin

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 13/09/2018 18:58

I think people are much kinder IRL so I remember that on AIBU

There have been some horrifically judgemental posters over the years who I imagine are v pleasant IRL. I try to
remember this!

I cannot believe people take huge offence at and MN is particularly bad for it. Loads of ANGRY people.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 13/09/2018 19:03

Many on mn are wedded to etiquette in a way I’ve never encountered in RL
The etiquette of feeling exasperated when they don’t receive a thoughtful handwritten thank you note on vellum paper

derxa · 13/09/2018 19:05

I'm probably nicer on here than IRL. The trouble with MN for me is the increase in trolling and the name changing. I miss the old names.

PawneeParksDept · 13/09/2018 19:05

It isn't that I build an image of someone just based of their name alone it's name plus their posts across threads at various times when I've encountered them on the boards and only on names that have become known to me for frequency or for being extremely nice or for being a major bellend Grin

abbsisspartacus · 13/09/2018 19:08

Pretty much the same cocky wacky blunt humorous busy car crash of a woman rocking her way through life's disasters

YeTalkShiteHen · 13/09/2018 19:10

abbsisspartacus what a wonderfully descriptive picture that paints! In a good way.

Changedforpost · 13/09/2018 19:33

@abbsiss I hear that. Same here!!

2018SoFarSoGreat · 13/09/2018 19:37

interesting thread.

I don't always notice usernames, but some people stick out - mostly in a good way. I always notice when MrsMozart speaks (..lass) and AF of course (always blunt and such good advice) and then I look for theMadHugger (((((((( )))))) on any thread that needs a hug - haven't seen he for a while, hope she is okay! When I do look at a username, it is mostly because they are nasty, in truth. Not opinionated - that I like. Nasty, not so much.

I don't know anyone in RL who is on MN. I'm sure there are some, I just don't know them. They would surely recognize me though; I'm a pretty open book. Much more so than in RL.

2018SoFarSoGreat · 13/09/2018 19:39

her. Haven't seen her. Damn my typing.

reallybored · 13/09/2018 20:07

In RL I'm a bit more bonkers, I speak to anyone, I'm loud (yep I even irritate myself at times) - if there is an opportunity to dress up - I'm there, don't care if I'm the only one in fancy dress.

On the other side of my life - I have a stupidly stressful job, a good degree from a good university, I've lived an interesting life to date, travelled the globe, including a few dangerous countries.

I probably come across as a split personality on MN. But then again, I change my user name on a regular basis to suit my mood.

TooManyPaws · 13/09/2018 20:11

Several degrees (Exeter and Sussex)

(The following in Lady Bracknell tones:)
REDBRICKS, dahling? And you're snobby about ex-polys?! 😂 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 13/09/2018 20:31

Anyone piped up about Russell Group yet?thats A mn perennial

Bluelady · 13/09/2018 20:50

I'm highly amused that the person who called me "a massively obnoxious and odious tool" this week now maintains that insults are the resort of someone losing the argument. Oh, the irony.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 13/09/2018 21:09

I got told off for using big wurds also amusing

YeTalkShiteHen · 13/09/2018 21:11

lipstick my university isn't on that list.

Ducks before this turns into a "what is a good university" chat discussion argh bargy conversation.

DioneTheDiabolist · 13/09/2018 21:38

Aw thanks YeTalkShiteHen, I'm feeling all fuzzy now.Flowers

JacNaylor · 13/09/2018 21:40

I like to believe that the people who are routinely sharp and rude on here are actually so sweet, kind and dull in real life that they have created an evil alter ego for themselves via Mumsnet, just to give their dark side an outlet Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 13/09/2018 21:41

Well, you can use this:

www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings-articles/world-university-rankings/top-universities-uk-2019

In conjunction with an assessment of 'is this a place where I/DC will get a good education in a subject appropriate for their aptitudes and aspirations, in a location they'll thrive in and enjoy'

My previous post had mention of sausage dogs, which have in the past made for some enjoyable threads if that sounds more fun.

Bluelady · 13/09/2018 21:45

You could have something there, Jac. I've always thought the rudest people probably wouldn't say boo to a goose irl.

MaisyPops · 13/09/2018 21:53

I think it's a cross section of life in the whole. People have good days, bad days, have strong opinions on some things, want to laugh and chat about others.

The only thing I find on MN that I don't see in real life is the professionally offended. In real life people would understand that some people are idiots/some parents promote awful behaviour etc. On MN people will try to prove how woke and liberal they are (e.g. I'd totally let my 13 year old dress in nothing more than underwear and hang out with 17 year old boys because it's their self expression and anyone suggesting thry are at risk of child sexual exploitation is victim blaming)

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 13/09/2018 21:58

I think mn notion of rude bears no relation to real life

On mn,folk are aghast when you get a table and sit the kids down prior to purchasing food
