This is a particular problem for AIBU but it seems like no one can ask for a simple bit of advice without someone being purposefully negative and downright unhelpful.

I.e I could start a thread saying AIBU to think that celery is disgusting.

One of the first comments would be YABU because some people live under famine and would be grateful for a huge bowl of celery.

OP posts:
iklboo · 20/09/2018 12:48

I know. I love my Radley bag but a thread I was on made out like I might has well be walking around with a ripped Spar carrier bag. Grin

Sparklyfee · 20/09/2018 12:50

I posted in chat asking for recommendations of monthly subscriptions etc after enjoying a Gousto box meal. Immediately accused of being a journalist because the PP hadn't heard of any that I mentioned in my OP Hmm

Luckily the next 60 PPs didn't seem to think so and I'm now signed up to lots of pricey monthly treats! Confused

CantankerousCamel · 20/09/2018 13:02

Don’t forget every relationship is doomed and everyone must LTB immediately

MinesaPinot · 20/09/2018 13:33

I'm loving this thread. I am continuously astounded by the sheer vitriol and nastiness doled out by some people. I'm sure they wouldn't say the same things if they met the OP in real life would they?

The medical threads - you must go to A & E immediately or your leg will fall off/you'll get sepsis/you'll drop dead in a nanosecond

Spending a lot of money on a bag - you are a nasty unthinking entitled person, don't you know every bag in the world is made in a sweatshop in Asia, why don't you carry a reuseable bag and buy a bench with the money so that everyone can enjoy it.

And everyone has to LTB, even if DP/DH/DW has just made the mistake of turning the telly over to the footie.....

Changedforpost · 20/09/2018 13:46

Say sniggering quite loudly at this thread. I've read a few threads like the op mentions and they are awful. I'm usually more of a lurker, purely as i wouldn't want my head bitten off for daring to have an opinion.

Also..... celery sucks balls

ThingInTheAttic · 20/09/2018 13:52

Gods help you if you say you like Radley bags
Goodness, I have been away too long and missed that. I bought TWO in a half price sale last winter. They don't have the dog on them and they are very classic and plain and I love them and shall use for them for years.

I bet I'm still wrong to have done it for a myriad reasons ( not ethical, self-indulgent, spendthrift, too common, too snobby, not snobby enough-insert relevant failing here Smile

ThingInTheAttic · 20/09/2018 13:56

Can't stand celery. Also, I once read that you use up more calories chewing it than it provides.
Which really annoys me for some reason.

ThingInTheAttic · 20/09/2018 13:59

When I first joined hundreds of years ago, you would be shunned if you admitted that you had EVER given your child a Greggs sausage roll or a Fruit Shoot.
You may as well have said you were dragging them up in a drugs den and pimping them out.

toomuchtooold · 20/09/2018 15:21

I would kill for a Gregg's sausage roll right now. misses point

Changedforpost · 20/09/2018 16:47

Oooh Greg's donut......

Changedforpost · 20/09/2018 16:48

Greggs even...ffs

FrangipaniBlue · 20/09/2018 17:12

This thread is properly giving me lolz - DH and DS keep looking at me funny 😂

toomuchtooold · 20/09/2018 17:42

Or a yum yum! IDK why New York thought they'd invented the cronut: Gregg's invented it 20 years ago and then they twirled it and dipped it in icing

iklboo · 20/09/2018 17:55

I would kill for a Gregg's sausage roll right now. misses point

Iceland sell frozen ones in packs of four. I get them in for just such a craving.

toomuchtooold · 20/09/2018 17:59

I live abroad but DH is flying back from London tonight. I wonder if there's a Gregg's in Heathrow? There's one in Glasgow, it's awesome...

OliviaStabler · 20/09/2018 18:21

Just looked up sausage rolls as I am amending my weekly online shop Grin

theOtherPamAyres · 20/09/2018 18:44

I love the threads where someone pipes up 100 posts or more into the topic with 'haven't read the other posts or updates but....." and says something really, really obvious that has been said repeatedly.

Incidentally, OP. I haven't read the other posts but if you feel strongly that celery is disgusting then I may disagree with you but, I swear, I will defend your right to say so loudly. It's a free country. Ignore the haters.

Rebecca36 · 20/09/2018 18:47

No-one should be giving advice unless they are qualified to do so. Anecdotal evidence is rarely helpful, no two situations are identical and people involved are individuals.

Making suggestions - gently - is OK.
Or else say nothing.

ThingInTheAttic · 20/09/2018 22:29

I saw one of these 'things' happen just yesterday. On the thread about white privilege. Someone saw fit to correct the (very minor) grammatical mistake in a post that was making an important and valid contribution. Because obviously that was the most important thing to focus on at that point in time ...

OliviaStabler · 21/09/2018 08:12

A new one on me is 'Whataboutery'. Never heard of that before but it was used to shut down someone not agreeing with the op.

CantankerousCamel · 21/09/2018 08:19

No. It was used on someone who was derailing the thread.

OliviaStabler · 21/09/2018 18:35

Talking of things I am sick of seeing on a thread Hmm

MyHusbandSaysIHave1000MNNames · 24/09/2018 01:30

Only on MN could people be so insensitive and stupid to get caught up in giving a grammar lesson in a thread about a 15 year old girl dying. The OP is primarily to blame but others could have simply ignored it. Hmm

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3373944-to-think-that-Pret-are-responsible-for-this-young-womans-death

Zoflorabore · 24/09/2018 01:46

I bloody love MN and it is my secret escape from the reality of life but ffs sometimes it's like a race to the bottom.

Op comes along and is skint. Has 27p
In the bank to last a week, clearly not looking for donations etc and will then see a post saying " well I've only got 26p and my husband has ran off with the milkman and my cat just died and and and " like it's a competition.

I do believe though that on the whole this place is an extremely supportive place but is quite pernickety about grammar.

Hippyshubby · 24/09/2018 02:29

I enjoy visiting MN but only for short periods because of this sort of thing. You can play thread bingo with it:
Unnecessarily negative comment
Repeats the obvious answer that a dozen people have already given
Continues an argument from a previous page despite it having been resolved
Troll
Sexism again men
Sexism against a specific subsection of women
Teacher bashing
Accusing someone of teacher bashing despite them making a reasonable point
Trans bashing
Accusations of trans bashing because they've completely misinterpreted what has been said.
Far right opinion
Far left opinion
A reasoned response to a genuine policy point
...that is ignored or attached
Stealth boasting
Knee jerk reactions
Huge waves of negative posts or posts against the OP
Huge waves of support for the OP
All the above cycling round again

All that said it isn't always like that... but I'm actually guilty of at least one of the above right now. I'm going to repeat advice that has already been given; ignore it. Amongst all the noise I've described above are the amazing MNetters who make this place what it is. Scroll past the bingo squares, ignore the buzzing of those who are not adding value and focus on those who do.
