This is a particular problem for AIBU but it seems like no one can ask for a simple bit of advice without someone being purposefully negative and downright unhelpful.

I.e I could start a thread saying AIBU to think that celery is disgusting.

One of the first comments would be YABU because some people live under famine and would be grateful for a huge bowl of celery.

YABU celery is the unsung hero of soups and stews.

YABU OP. At least you've got a thread for others to me-rail, look at all the replies you've got. We don't all have that luxury, I had thread once and nothing - just crickets and tumbleweed. Would it have killed a few vipers to jump in with a sanctimonious putdown or two? Just a few Biscuit crumbs?

esk1mo · 13/09/2018 12:07

on the topic of annoying things on MN, i hate when a poster starts a thread about a real situation that’s quite shocking, asking for advice.

obviously posters start giving advice “poor you OP Flowers this is what i would do”

but then it escalates, posters start posting 6,7,8 paragraphs in detail about what they would do, repeating previous advice. its as if they’re trying to out-do previous posters, thinking they’ll be the one that OP quotes and takes advice from.

you end up having to scroll through 24 pages of identical advice before getting to the 2nd post from OP who is overwhelmed by 100’s of posters trying to get their attention.

can’t you just @ the user who originally gave the good advice, say you agree with them and wish the OP well?

BluthsFrozenBananas · 13/09/2018 12:07

People can get offended by anything. One of the worst examples of this I saw was on a thread about cold shoulder tops of all things. There was general agreement across the thread that they were cheap and tacky looking and the trend needed to die. Then someone posted in outrage that they had bought their teen daughter with SEN a cold shoulder top for an upcoming family party, and she couldn’t believe all these posters were saying her DD was going to look cheap and tacky.

I’ve been here several years now, there are certain subjects that when I see a newbie posting about I just cringe for them because they might have thought they were asking an innocent question, but i know they’re about to get royally flamed and probably never come back.

These subjects include, but are not limited to, designer dog breeds, amber teething bracelets, helium balloons and balloon releases, ear piercing on any child below teenage, wanting to buy a pink buggy, children eating fast food, holidaying in Dubai, speaking to a teacher (ah OP, you’re that parent), being unhappy your other half forgot your birthday and cake smash baby photos.

CassandraCross · 13/09/2018 12:08

user1510568216 so do IGrin. Also imagine some of the smuggy ones who who post a useless caustic comment sitting back in their chairs, folding their arms across their chest and saying "There that told them" complete with smug grin on their face. My thoughts on them would soon wipe the inane grin off their faces.

WhirlyGigWhirlyGig · 13/09/2018 12:10

esk1mo don't go round @'ng at people. I've seen a few get their knickers in a twist recently about that Hmm

theworldistoosmall · 13/09/2018 12:10

Damn you and all this talk about celery. The way I tolerate it is in a Bloody Mary. Tried to improvise with vodka, cherry tomatoes and celery. It's weird I tell you.

BluthsFrozenBananas · 13/09/2018 12:15

Best way to eat celery is to go old school and serve it the way my grandfather liked it, with a generous line of Primula cheese spread in a tube squeezed down the concave side. Make it extra fancy by using the ham or salmon flavoured version.

roundturnandtwohalfhitches · 13/09/2018 12:17

Yep. There was a thread the other day where an OP was upset about her husband, whose attitude towards her had completely changed and she felt neglected, only for someone to say, well her husband had been dead 25 years so the OP should think herself lucky to have a living husband at all. confused

Jesus, maybe my Mum can use the internet after all.

CassandraCross · 13/09/2018 12:19

Bluths your first paragraph made me laugh, people take things so personally don't they? Also agree with the rest of your post, the flame throwers spitting fire and the condescending not this topic again, there have been loads of threads about this on MN types usually descend on the thread within 30 seconds.

user1510568216 · 13/09/2018 12:20

@BluthsFrozenBananas that reminds me of a party I went to yrs ago. They served ham rolled up with primula squeezed through the middle. Don't get me wrong I like primula spread but the shiny, slimy ham makes me gag. I love celery. Dipped in full fat Philadelphia with rock salt.

LoisWilkerson1 · 13/09/2018 12:22

Joyless, chewy faced fun sucking is the whole reason some people join mn. I think there's a poster somewhere encouraging them to come goose stepping on here.

user1510568216 · 13/09/2018 12:29

I've seen lots of posts where people criticise us that have user12345 as a username. They can't take them seriously & ignore their posts. I literally have no idea how to change my username on the app. This is the one MN christened me with & im fond of it now. Even if I can't remember it & will be screwed if I ever log out. How can something so inconsequential piss people off.

iklboo · 13/09/2018 12:30

I could probably make a fortune selling virtual boots to posters kicking an OP when they're down.

There is a weird snobbery about usernames I've noticed this too! Probably best not to ever change it as people don't like that either

slashlover · 13/09/2018 13:19

OP - My husband has done running/cycling/other hobby for years, a woman has joined the club and he sometimes goes running/cycling/hobby with her.

Half the replies are about how the husband is OBVIOUSLY having an affair or the woman is OBVIOUSLY trying to steal OPs husband. Someone will mention 'spidey-senses tingling and how they wouldn't allow it.

delphguelph · 13/09/2018 13:20

Totally agree.

And its usually the first poster.

There's one atm, some guy who stinks on the train, a poster making excuses for him. Give me a break.

SuckOnTHATRyan · 13/09/2018 13:32

Oh parts of this thread has made me laugh! Fwiw I have a dead parent who died suddenly and unexpectedly, a year to the day before I gave birth to dc1. But I only bring it up in relation to my own circumstances. Oh and once I did have to say on a thread “yeah my mum’s dead too and I still think the op should ditch hers” or something.

That said, when people complain about their MIL wanting to do something helpful / harmless like babysit her GC, on her own, (Shock the audacity), or similar, assuming there isn’t a massive backstory, the ops usually get their arse handed to them on here and that includes posts from people saying “have you any idea how lucky you are”? Ditto, when a very proud WOH mum started a really goady thread about how strong and independent she was for going to work compared to sahms. Then it turned out she got free regular childcare from her parents Confused. I would love to be able to do a normal weekday job, as I did pre-dcs, but we can’t afford the childcare. It would cost us money for me to go to work. So I work as a waitress in the evenings and weekends 🤷‍♀️. If I had more dcs, or if my DH worked longer hours or less flexibly, I couldn’t even do that.

So I do find the crowing threads about things like that deserving of the odd “do you know how lucky you are?” type comment.

The affairs thing... people assume a lot of people are having affairs because sadly a lot of people have affairs.

toomuchtooold · 13/09/2018 13:42

I must admit I like it when people pick a meaningful name and stick with it because then I can discount the opinions of people who make people take off their shoes when they visit build up a picture of people. But I understand why people don't do it.

Hey and I made a chili the other night, Jamie Oliver recipe and it had celery in it. Celery and Jamie Oliver, that's it, the thread's going to kick right off now...

beeefcake · 13/09/2018 14:04

For what it's worth I don't actually mind celery. Used to hate it when I was younger but have warmed to it. Especially in a Bloody Mary.

It's a chat forum. Every singlr poster has their own views on every single topic.

Wanting everyone to be sympathetic and agree is unrealistic and tbh if it did happen the place would be boring.
