To still be annoyed that Hermione married Ron?

I know, the last book came out years ago, but I’m re-reading them now with DS and it’s got me annoyed all over again. He’s a mediocre, sulky man-child, while she’s a brilliantly talented witch. Why would she ever marry him?!

Oh 100% at the unbelievabity at harry and Ginny!. Talk about replacing the family you lost!

RaynaJaymes · 08/09/2018 22:47

Im team Ron and Hermione and also annoyed that Jk Rowling regrets their pairing.
I’ve always enjoyed the fact that she didn’t go down the obvious route of Hermione with Harry

Harry and Ginny though are a no from me
would’ve liked him to have a muggle wife that introduces to the wizarding world

Not over invested in these books at all Grin

Is the rule now that if it was written more than ten years ago we can ruin it for people?

Pringlecat · 08/09/2018 22:48

@Manderleyagain She was the first of the Golden Trio to figure out that he wasn't actually evil and they had been pretty unkind in their assumptions, and if you remember, whilst she wasn't bullied throughout school like he was, that was largely down to luck. If Harry and Ron hadn't bonded with her over the troll incident, she might well have gone through Hogwarts completely friendless. I think she was mature enough to understand the road he took to redemption and how he ended up in that position to start with. There but for the grace of...

Don't forget as well, he was effectively an underdog who did good, and Hermione had a thing for rescuing people (think the house elves and Ron). I think she would have loved to 'rescue' someone like Snape - some women have that fixer personality and I think she was one of them.

Although he was her professor, really, who taught Hermione anything? She knew it all! Grin And latterly, they fought together in the Order of the Phoenix, so they were working together as equals, rather than a teacher-student relationship.

The age gap is only sketchy in muggle terms - given how long witches and wizards live, there wasn't much in it.

It's such a shame JKR killed him off... By far, the best and most complex character.

MrsChollySawcutt · 08/09/2018 22:49

I so wanted Harry and Luna to get together. She understood him, knew what it was like to lose your mother at an early age and have seen death.

What did he have in common with Ginny - Quidditch?

BitOfFun · 08/09/2018 22:50

Ginny is utterly without charisma for me. I never understood why Harry was attracted to her beyond wanting to spend his Christmases forever at the Weasleys.

Quartz2208 · 08/09/2018 22:50

Lavender dies though and think cursed child works much better with Draco marrying Astoria greengrass

MissTerryShopper · 08/09/2018 22:57

ThomasRichard, when you say Ron stormed off sulking 'over the camping' - do you mean when he was affected by wearing the Horcrux??

Amanduh · 08/09/2018 22:58

It’s not secret brilliance... he opened the chamber, so the whole series events stemmed from that... especially as he saved them from the devils snare, solved things with the truth potion, and he’s an auror, he got exceeds expectations at the hardest exams, he disarmed Bellatrix and can perform extremely powerful nonverbals, he killled Greyback after 26 wizards couldn’t, he duelled and survived the wizarding war, he got rid of dementors WHILST flying, he has a jack russell patronus which is the mark of superior wizarding abiltity Grin he isn’t the most ‘book’ smart but he is a brilliant character

QueenOfCatan · 08/09/2018 22:59

Haven't read the thread as I spotted it just before going to bed but I totally agree! I think George would have been a significantly better fit, the twins were really intelligent and entrepreneurial despite their exaggerated jokey acts and I suspect that George and Hermione would have had a great deal of respect for each others intellect. I could imagine them puzzling over some new potion or charm for hours trying to work out how to fix something that wasn't going quite to plan. Much better for than bloody Ron (who I do love as a character still! Just not with Hermione!)

ALemonyPea · 08/09/2018 23:00

It still annoys me about the names Harry gives his son. What an awful combo. Do wizards have MN? Can you imagine the thread Ginny would be writing!

My DH keeps using the fact he was the chosen one to get oneupmanship on our DC names.

Piggyhoolier · 08/09/2018 23:02

I don’t get this, Ron might not be academic but he’s definitely intelligent. My DH and I are very similar to Hermione & Ron. On paper we have little in common but in practice we’re brilliant together. He was hopeless at school and failed everything, I loved it, sailed through A levels and have a degree. But our values and interests are the same, I could search for a lifetime and not find a man as great as him and that’s what counts for love. So I see Hermione & Ron together for the long haul, happy and in love.

myicloudisfull · 08/09/2018 23:02

Are we talking book or film? Because book Ginny and Harry totally go together. But film Ginny was so different to how she was written in the books and so they looked like a rubbish pairing on screen.
Film Ron and hermione were okay I thought. But book Ron and hermione not so much. She seemed to get on much better with harry. Her and Ron were always arguing, never agreeing on anything. What an exhausting relationship.

QueenOfCatan · 08/09/2018 23:03

Never liked Ginny and Harry too, especially as jk insisted that she'd never seen fanfiction involving Harry and the character she had in mind for him nor had she seen many discussions on forums. I honestly thought its be somebody mentioned but not involved actively in the earlier stories and would get more time in the last two books (as she said this around book 5), like Susan Bones or Hannah Abbott. Every other Harry ship on the biggest fanfiction site at the time was Harry/Ginny. She was well aware of the sites and theories as she was a frequent poster on mugglenet and other big hp forums (under a pseudonym).

I'll come back in the morning to read all the comments, just had to rant a bit Grin

Icantreachthepretzels · 08/09/2018 23:05

A part from the fact that Snape is old enough to be Hermione's father - he is also the teacher, the teacher, who looks at her cursed fast growing teeth and says 'I see no difference' thus making her cry. Yep. He's Hermione's missing prince charming alright Hmm
oh - yeah ... he's also her teacher. That's not OK.

And as for Draco, he despises Hermione because of her mud blood. Why would Hermione want to marry someone who is a wizard racist against her? She never came across as a sado-masochist.

TheSeasonOfTheWitch · 08/09/2018 23:07

I think one can't underestimate the connection one gets through shared experience and trauma. Ron and Hermione are bonded together through their experience of being joint side kick to Harry. No one, not even Fred or George will quite understand that.

I think it's that deep connection that will always over rise a Krum/leading light type academic in Hermione's life. No matter how clever people are, there are very few who would have been as brave as Ron.

Also hermione is quite self assured and self sufficient. She doesn't need anyone to be brilliant or flattering to her existence. She is enough on her own. I find that very refreshing, no need to be part of a power couple.

Heartbrokengirl14 · 08/09/2018 23:10

Not sure if it’s true but I heard that jk Rowling want to pair her with Fred! I wish she had! He was both smart and fun and would help her break out of working to hard! Fred and Hermione forever !!!

ThomasRichard · 08/09/2018 23:10

Ginny was a lot more self-assured and feisty in the books. I can see why Harry was attracted to her.

Ron, nah. He opened the chamber after paying attention to what Harry said to the locket. He had help with Fenrir. He didn’t get any Exceeded Expectations and he doesn’t do any non-verbal spells. I’m going by the books here; the films were a bit long ago Blush

Pringlecat · 08/09/2018 23:12

@Icantreachthepretzels Right, because someone pretending to be a Death Eater should say nice things to an upset muggle-born Gryffindor? He was a double agent. He had to do all kinds of upsetting unpleasant things that I'm sure he regretted.

Again, whilst I think the age and teacher points would be very good points in real life, I think in the context of a world where Hogwarts is real and people live beyond 100 - not so much. Plus, given all wizarding children in the UK went to Hogwarts and Snape went into teaching really young, he had pretty much taught all the younger women still within an 'acceptable' age gap.

FannyOutOfTheFarawayTree · 08/09/2018 23:12

Still am. There’s a very well written fanfic where Draco is hidden at hogwarts after the war and the rest is history. This one is actually very well written but I can’t remember the name or author. I prefer that as my ending.

ThomasRichard · 08/09/2018 23:13

Do you think the shared trauma thing would wear off though? I can imagine living it down and wanting to be ‘over’ that part of your life, while the other person still wants to talk about it.

I can see opposites attracting. He’s just too sulky for me!

I don't know what is wrong with Ron? Men stay with loyal women who look after their families. The wives are not holding them back, actually enabling them. Why should an incredibly smart woman has to be happy with only an incredibly smart man? Ron did smart, brave, hardworking and resilient all the way through to the last chapter. I think JK Rowling got pushed into saying that.

Amanduh · 08/09/2018 23:18

You clearly didnt pay much attention to either then?! He got exceeded in the hardest subjects - Defence ATDA, Charms, Potions, Transfigurations and Care of Magical Creatures. He
