To still be annoyed that Hermione married Ron?

I know, the last book came out years ago, but I’m re-reading them now with DS and it’s got me annoyed all over again. He’s a mediocre, sulky man-child, while she’s a brilliantly talented witch. Why would she ever marry him?!

It’s in DH as they visit her house after the death eaters have taken her from school.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 11/09/2018 14:12

Somerset iirc

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 11/09/2018 14:13

Luna isn’t mentioned until order of the Phoenix

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 11/09/2018 14:26

Luna isn't mentioned until OotP, but when they go to catch the Portkey in GoF they mention a couple of wizarding families in the area — one couldn't get tickets, one has gone early etc. I can't remember whether the Lovegoods are one of the ones mentioned though — does anybody have a copy to hand?

Quartz2208 · 11/09/2018 14:45

The Ginny of the books though is very different to the Ginny of the movies. They do retcon quite a bit as well to the main characters so quite a few (Neville/Ginny/Luna) miss crucial character bits in the film to Harry/Ron/Hermione.

Miyah · 11/09/2018 15:58

Agree that Evanna Lynch was great for Luna, one of the few good choices they made with cast

slithytove · 11/09/2018 16:40

Polka isn’t that just where she lives?

QuimReaper · 11/09/2018 16:48

Luna could quite easily have grown up in Ireland and moved to Ottery St Whatever as a teenager. I agree that Evanna Lynch was great. She stood out a mile from Eyebrows Watson, who in OotP was still gasping and screeching her way through every line and mangling every syllable, and Boring Wright who just stumbled vacantly through the entire franchise.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 11/09/2018 17:55

Well yes, I'm just an insufferable know-it-all when it comes to the books. Grin There's nothing that says whether she's Irish or not, but it does say where she lives.

slithytove · 11/09/2018 18:04

😁

Marcipex · 11/09/2018 18:06

I'm afraid Bonnie Wright was mis cast. I suppose having cast her , no one really liked to get rid.
Ginny in the books becomes witty, clever, and amusing , as well as pretty.

Miyah · 11/09/2018 18:28

I guess one difficult thing about casting was that they cast them at age 9/10 to continue playing the role through to their late teens

Sashkin · 11/09/2018 18:36

Why does she have to be black? As long as no one has an issue with the actress in the play

The trouble is, a lot of people DID have a problem with it. Some people completely lost their minds over it at the time. Just like they lose their minds over black Hamlets, female Henry Vs etc.

It shouldn’t matter, but because it does to some racists people it is important that JK pushed back and said a black Hermione was fine and dandy (and actually it does make a lot of sense for the character in retrospect).

callmekitten · 11/09/2018 18:53

I'm pretty sure that, somewhere in the books, it says that Ron is AMAZING in bed. So that explains it then.

Wavyheaded · 11/09/2018 19:29

Guys, I've just finished reading The Politician's Wife, someone posted it on here earlier, and phew! It's ace.. I've never read fan fiction before and I'm really feeling the Hermione/Draco vibes now.. Blush

Anyone else think Harry is actually the dullest out of all the characters? Something about him was always one dimensional to me.

Dogswithteddies · 11/09/2018 21:50

Callmeakittem

Thanks, that explains it! 🤫😆

For a book about teenagers all the way up to age 18, there’s a distinct lack of sex in HP. Kissing badly is the raunchiest it gets in teen wizard land.

@Wavyheaded I just read it too! It was great! Although the small Americanisms were a bit annoying.
... Feel like fanfiction is a slippery slope though...

Miyah · 12/09/2018 01:34

@ThomasRichard I’ve always thought this. I don’t know whether that’s because the books are technically ‘children’s books’ so it’s been left open to reader interpretation, or whether the wizarding world is just more innocent and they wait until they’re married

TheHulksPurplePanties · 12/09/2018 04:33

There are hints I think. I'm convinced that Voldemort did something sexual to the two kids in the cave when he was 9. Also sure Aberforth was too close to goats. And I think Ginny was about to give it up in DH's until Ron interrupted. But yes, for the most part it's very chaste. For all intents and purposes it would seem that Snape, Sirius and Lupin were 30 odd year old virgins.

Fiderer · 12/09/2018 07:35

When Harry and Ginny get together she relates how Romilda Vane had asked her if it's true that Harry had a hippogriff tattoo on his chest. Ginny told her no, a Hungarian Horntail, "much more macho".

So at least some hint of shirt off contact, or just wishful thinking/jealousy by Romilda Vane who'd given the love potion chocolates to Harry.

Ron was obviously inclined to believe the shirt off thing as later when they're changing into the seven Potters he says "I knew Ginny was lying about that tattoo."

Agree book Ginny much better, re-listening to the audiobooks that jumps out so clearly and makes Harry/Ginny much more plausible.

3luckystars · 12/09/2018 07:48

I bet those love potion chocolates didn’t have palm oil in them, back in the 90’s.

I watched the very last Harry Potter last night. I had forgotten a lot. I’m going to read all the books again this year.

Quartz2208 · 12/09/2018 08:12

The films have a lot to answer for they tend to make you think of the characters in the way that the actors present and make them look for some this can be negative for others positive (thinking of Neville Longbottom here how much of Luna and Neville together is because of that rather than the books)

TheHulksPurplePanties · 12/09/2018 08:16

A lot I think. They don't REALLY interact much in the books. If they do its sort of vicariously through the DH or being around Harry, rather than common interest.
