To still be annoyed that Hermione married Ron?

I know, the last book came out years ago, but I’m re-reading them now with DS and it’s got me annoyed all over again. He’s a mediocre, sulky man-child, while she’s a brilliantly talented witch. Why would she ever marry him?!

Canon? Is HP actual scripture now?! What monster have I started here?

We debated this at work today. One colleague said I was being harsh on Ron. The rest agreed he was a numpty and Hermione would get bored with him man-chilling about the place PDQ.

Yes canon other wise how can you pick which fan fic to read

And yes, Hermione and Ron would not have worked. I think she would have had an affair.

All this canon obsession and fan fiction stuff is actually ruining it for me. Sounds like a total drag being bound to what is only written on the page and no other interpretation is acceptable.

Without being rude, most fan fiction is a load of bollox.

slithytove · 10/09/2018 23:05

And yet fan fiction is the very definition of other interpretations

Some is really good. Methods of rationality is just great as an alternative take on it though of course is chalk and cheese to canon.

I’m surprised that my personal preference that canon is canon is ruining it for you though - I’m not that important! Plus, I don’t think you do have to be bound to it. Though some continuity would be nice.

Mymycherrypie · 10/09/2018 23:10

It’s the quotes and the references that are sucking the joy out of it.

I wouldn’t have said fan fiction is another interpretation. It’s a continuation. An interpretation would be looking at themes, subtext, motifs, metaphors, devices of the existing text. Not just “chapter 12, paragraph 2 clearly states hermoine was pink” yawn.

slithytove · 10/09/2018 23:15

Try methods of rationality or the problem with purity - definitely interpretation. Though the former is a bit hard going at first but does get far better,

slithytove · 10/09/2018 23:16

And happily both remove the issue of Hermione with Ron

I could take or leave Ron and Hermione getting together, except that it was so clearly laid out from about book four. I definitely would have Ginny having her string of boyfriends, then going off to play for the Harpies and finding a girlfriend there.

I know the previous generation got married quickly because of the war (like the second world war), but that argument doesn't hold for harry, Ron, Hermione etc. They were still teenagers when the war ended, they had plenty of time. Plus wizards either seem to die young (in wars) or live to be ancient. I wonder if they have longer fertility to match?

The best fanfiction pairing is Sirius/lupin in The Shoebox project.

QuimReaper · 10/09/2018 23:27

The eyes thing in the film was ridiculous! Not so much harry not having very green eyes but WHAT WERE THEY THUNKING casting a little girl with brown eyes to play Lily? They could have so easily just adjusted them in post!

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 10/09/2018 23:31

You need to fall down the rabbit hole of fan fic. Would have been interesting for her to end up with Charlie lol

TheHulksPurplePanties · 11/09/2018 04:54

It occurred to me recently that the really got the ages wrong in the films - snape would only have been 32-39 in the books as would Sirius. I’m still gutted they didn’t get Johnny Depp to play Sirius at the time - how are teenage girls supposed to fancy Gary Oldman ffs

I started a thread about this awhile ago. Snape/Sirius/Lupin would have been 31- 37 in the books. While I love the actors who played them, they were cast completely wrongly in terms of age. Sirius was supposed to look older because of Azkaban, Lupin was supposed to be young but "grey and tired" and Snape is supposed to be skinny & twitchy and I assume quite young looking. Rickman was in his mid-50's in the first movie and neither skinny or twitchy.

If they re-did the movies now I'd cast Adam Driver as Snape. The whole Kylo Ren character is just space-Snape.

madeyemoodysmum · 11/09/2018 07:28

Ron is sweet
He is cute with his red hair
He has strong family values
He is extremely brave
He has vulnerable aspects to his personality
He is clever when it comes to it. I think he is just a bit too laid back unless pushed.
He loves Hermione
He is very funny and dry That's very attractive. How many comedians have beautiful wives

And most importantly they are bonded together by what they have been through together Hermione saved Ron in the forest and they both spent all of the battle together.

They can't just walk away from that kind of a tie.

Ron will also be a great dad. like his dad was

The eyes with Harry & Lily wind me up.

We went to see CC - black Hermione was fine. I think it worked better. But the actress who played Ginny ruined the whole thing for me. She was IMO more film Ginny than book Ginny. And even more irritating.

Namelessinseattle · 11/09/2018 08:27

I am only on page 5 but can’t wait to rtft to jump in. No way Harry and Hermione would end up together, all wrong. I Love Ron and Hermione, I do think they should have split up after school for a time to fully appreciate each other.

I think Hermione is a tad bossy and controlling and wouldn’t be up for challenging discussion at home. Which would suit ron perfectly. But I do think they’d annoy each other, so need that break to appreciate what’s out there.

Namelessinseattle · 11/09/2018 08:35

Ok slightly more caught up- re Hermione being black in the play, no one seemed that upset that Luna in the movie is played by an Irish actress or that cho was Scottish?

I love Evanna Lynch, I read somewhere that she’s the only actor who influenced her character, once jk heard her play Luna that’s how she started imagining Luna look and sound.

slithytove · 11/09/2018 09:57

Iirc Luna and Cho weren’t specified as being from any particular part of the UK were they? Maybe there aren’t any magic schools in England or Ireland. Surprised there weren’t more Scots at Hogwarts

slithytove · 11/09/2018 09:58

I think if cho had become white English in the later movies that would have been strange, purely for continuity. Like the Lavender swap.

Course she could be English with a Scottish accent, I was for half a decade

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 11/09/2018 10:06

I honestly don’t think it matters whether Hermione is played by a black or a white actress. While I do think Hermione was originally written with a white girl in mind, her skin colour isn’t mentioned therefore it is up to the reader to decide what they want her to look like while reading.

Still think CC is a pile of poop though.

QuimReaper · 11/09/2018 10:26

ISend that was one of the single oddest things about the CC staging to me: a lot of the scenes and characters were direct copies of the film versions, which were themselves stark deviations from the books. Moaning Myrtle was the most noticeable example for me: in the books she was sulky and surly and a bit dour, whereas in the films they made her into a petulant little Shirley Temple type, and she kept doing that "WOOOOOOOOOO" thing and flouncing around all over the place. The actress in CC seemed to just be doing a direct mimicry of the Shirley Henderson performance, even down to the baby voice.

That was sort of understandable since, as my sister pointed out, they probably felt they had to make Myrtle more visually dynamic for the film, to make her scenes work without being a bit static, and perhaps the same was thought to apply to the stage. But the actress who played Ginny seemed to do the same thing, a bland re-enactment of Bonnie Wright's completely disastrous, one-note performance, which was just so frustrating! Ginny is one of the big missed opportunities in my opinion, and if I had an opportunity to do a sort of "official" retcon I'd have a ball making her really sassy and funny. I think I'd make her a quick-talking snappy-quipping journalist genius, like a cross between Lorelai Gilmore and that reporter in The Hudsucker Proxy.

cartercan · 11/09/2018 13:00

@PinguDance I fancied Gary Oldman when I was a teen. Especially as Sirius Black. All my friends at school thought I was bonkers. Grin

MorrisZapp · 11/09/2018 13:07

Oh god yes re Kylo Ren. I'm not a Star Wars fan but I tolerate it for DS. Soon as I saw that Kylo character I was like THAT'S JUST A THIN SNAPE.

The ages don't add up at all, it's true. I really enjoy the your tube guy who does all the voices, bloody genius.

Anyway we're off to the HP studio tour in October so I feel a wizarding winter coming on! Thank god for primark and their cheap pyjamas.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 11/09/2018 14:00

slithy Luna is from near the Weasleys — I think it's mentioned in GoF when they're going to the World Cup. If not then it's in HBP or the DH.

I think is supposed to be Somerset or Devon area.
