To want to throttle the snoring DP on the maternity ward?

I’m currently staying on a maternity ward in hospital after a truly horrible day having my yet to be born baby’s movements monitored. I’m feeling so sick with worry, exhausted and uncomfortable. All I want is to sleep for a few hours. It’s just me and one other couple in a room with 4 bays. There’s a man snoring away like an absolute beast and I can’t get any rest at all. As I’m not about to give birth or have just given birth I really don’t want to ask to be moved as I don’t feel entirely justified. What makes it worse is this couple have been so Inconsiderate all sodding day, playing films really loudly and talking at such a volume it’s almost like they’re yelling at each other. When I had my first DC I was also kept awake post birth by a snorer but I wasn’t as bothered as I had a beautiful baby to look at all night and the other snorer’s DP had just had a baby themselves. But this warthog - I’m not really sure why he’s here... How do I get through this endless night?!

Complain to the staff. Surely anyone who's not a patient shouldn't be on the ward at night?

notgivingin789 · 28/08/2018 03:33

Let it go.

Starlight345 · 28/08/2018 03:33

Talk to the staff.

WindyScales · 28/08/2018 03:38

Do you have any ear plugs? Make sure you get some for tomorrow night!

Poor you! If it was me I’d complain to the nurses/midwives. What have you got to lose? I’m sure they get this all the time. Is the man sitting up in a chair or recliner chair? The position those chairs put you in is not ideal unfortunately.

MakeItStopNeville · 28/08/2018 03:39

Definitely talk to the staff.

Screaminginsidemeagain · 28/08/2018 03:39

Talk to the nurses- he shouldn’t be there!

MakeItStopNeville · 28/08/2018 03:41

As a complete aside, does this really happen now? Partners sleep in the wards?! Call me an old fart as much as you like, but that’s so wrong.

Lilyabelle · 28/08/2018 03:45

I feel a little awkward complaining to be honest. I know, I know, I need to put my big girl pants on. I think I’m just so shattered I don’t have the energy. So I’m lying here moaning about it to you lovely lot! I totally understand those chairs aren’t the best and probably make it worse - I’m just so sleep deprived it’s turning me into a proper grouch. On the plus side, baby is moving around lots more Smile

@MakeItStopNeville They certainly seem to be allowed to at this hospital. I don’t think it’s the case on every ward but certainly is on the maternity and postnatal ones!

I’m on a maternity ward right now (being induced but there’s no room on the induction ward) and I’ve been told DH can stay if he wants (due to the time - we were told to come in at midnight to start the process!) but I think I’m going to send him home. He’s not much good to me here unable to sleep in an uncomfortable chair!

SteviaStephanie · 28/08/2018 03:56

Partners were allowed on the ward 24/7 in the hospital where I had my DC, yes.

It’s bad enough when fellow patients are inconsiderate, but a visitor? You poor thing. Can you ask a midwife for help if there’s one free? They might be able to give him a nudge or to move you into a different room (if there are any beds of course).

Lots and lots of luck OP. This will be over before you know it and you’ll have your baby!

Menolly · 28/08/2018 03:57

Glad baby is moving around more. Is there anyone that can bring you earplugs if you are in another night? He might have a very good reason o be there but I would ask the nurses if they can give him a kick so he at least shuts up long enough for you to doze off.

Lilyabelle · 28/08/2018 05:10

Thanks everyone for your messages. Slight development here. I’ve been having some pretty tight contractions so they’ve moved me into delivery. Peace at last! The only problem is I’m only 30 weeks! Absolutely terrified. I honestly can’t believe this is happening.

monal · 28/08/2018 05:18

Good luck Lilyabelle. In later years you can tell your beautiful baby how his/her rush to arrive saved you from a snorer Flowers

icklekid · 28/08/2018 05:21

I'm glad you've moved but appreciate that at 30 weeks that's quite scary. I went into labour at 34 weeks with my second and was still in denial. Hope the staff are talking to you about what will happen if baby needs support in different ways and whilst they will need NICU care they are honestly amazing. Please keep asking questions and try and rest if you can

Limpshade · 28/08/2018 05:23

Best wishes @Lilyabelle, thinking of you and your little one!

Lilyabelle · 28/08/2018 05:25

Hahaha! Thanks @monal. They’re doing everything they can to stop me from going into premature labour. The baby simply can’t come now as we haven’t bought anything for him/her!

When I was on the maternity ward the DP next to me with his partner complained about my snoring Grin

BarrackerBarmer · 28/08/2018 06:48

There's a man on your maternity ward?!
This is a breach, and you absolutely are entitled to complain. The NHS are supposed to fine ward breaches.

I hope all is well with you and your baby.

Cantchooseaname · 28/08/2018 06:48

Amazon prime. Next day for pretty much everything!!
Fingers crossed all goes well for you.

CripsSandwiches · 28/08/2018 06:49

I would speak to the staff - I thought only children could have overnight guests in hospital rooms. (When my DD was in hospital they were very strict that only one of us could stay even though the ward was empty).

CripsSandwiches · 28/08/2018 06:51

Oops sorry missed the update glad you've got some peace and quiet. Hope baby stays a cooking for another few weeks though! I had massive early contractions too - the midwife was shocked and moved me straight to delivery. I ended up being induced at 42 weeks.

Buggeritimgettingup · 28/08/2018 06:51

Hope your little one cooks a little longer, but if they don't my 28weeker is now a strapping six foot 16 year old, medicine etc has moved on enormously since then. As for shopping at least you'll only buy things you need not a load of claptrap people tell you! Oh and ask about kangaroo care/skin to skin as soon as possible.
Good luck!

GlitteryFluff · 28/08/2018 06:59

Thinking of you. Hope they can keep baby in there a tad longer Thanks

Amanduh · 28/08/2018 07:50

A breach of what? I’ve been on three maternity wards and men have been allowed overnight on all of them?
