Women have never been good enough to be the face of a brand. But in a brave and stunning move for equality , Pampers have picked Daley and Black as perfect brand ambassadors

Geekone I totally accept that there are men out there who are better at the shopping, cooking, with kids etc than some women. Im just speaking from my experience and my friends etc. On a side note, my P does help out with all jobs around house/kids, but it's just that I do the majority of it as I am much better at it

Carriemac · 23/08/2018 10:06

I'd like to see the woman they bought their baby from on the ad too. that would be truly modern.
'The right to parent must be seen as distinct from the right to have another person gestate a child for you. This is not something that applies solely to gay men; it applies to everyone, and while some people have traditionally had greater access to the exploitation of female reproductive bodies than others, this does not make exploitation itself a right.'

Coldilox · 23/08/2018 10:09

Rather than criticise pampers for using men in an advert can we maybe celebrate the fact that they are using a same sex couple? Some sex couples (both man and women), people of colour, people with disabilities are grossly under represented in the media and particularly advertising.

rainbowsandsmiles · 23/08/2018 10:10

She presumably doesn't want to parent though. She acted as a surrogate for them, didn't she?
Loads of people are surrogates. They don't want to be a parent and keep the baby for themselves.
Why would a non parent be on the advert too? That doesn't really make sense.

Juells · 23/08/2018 10:24

Some sex couples (both man and women)

It's never two women though, is it? Not woke enough. Where I live Kellogs' ads have two drag queens, two husbands etc. but lesbians are a bridge too far.

MoggyP · 23/08/2018 10:24

ferntwist

Why?

Because they've had men and women before in their adverts. Is it just that you do!mt want to see homosexual men getting the gig some years later n e others?

Coldilox · 23/08/2018 10:27

Juells I can think of a few adverts in recent years that have had lesbians in. A few more that have gay men in, but often only for the saleable "camp" factor. Just regular couples, probably the same as women

geekone · 23/08/2018 10:31

@Sisgal even the fact that you use the phrase “helps out” speaks volumes and allows us to perpetuate the myth that women are better parents and cleaners than men. It is demeaning and degrading to both men and women. I am sure your DH is happy for you to trundle on and do all the the “wife work” and deal with all life’s shitty stuff that way he doesn’t have to.
I agree that some people are better at thins than others but it’s not gender specific. It’s opimions like this that will keep women in lower paid less “important” jobs as we will be bringing our kids up to believe men are better at business and science and money and women are better at cleaning and childcare. Pah!! (Please make a very hard P noise when reading pah or my indignity will not be heard properlyGrin)

geekone · 23/08/2018 10:31

*Things not thins

Juells · 23/08/2018 10:33

Genuine question - which ones? I'm willing to admit that I may notice all the drag queens in ads because I find them offensive, so react badly. But I've never noticed lesbians.

OrchidInTheSun · 23/08/2018 10:33

Of course the surrogate is a parent! She's the baby's mother!

Coldilox · 23/08/2018 10:37

Juells there was one about a year ago for a bank - maybe Lloyds or TSB. And I remember there being a couple more but I genuinely can't remember what they were - I am not a marketers dream by any means Grin I just remember pointing out to my wife "did you see that? That advert had lesbians in!"

Coldilox · 23/08/2018 10:39

The bank one showed a lesbian couple kissing (peck on the lips) and embracing as part of a montage of "save for your future" type images. It was just nice to see a female couple included in a range of normal family images.

rainbowsandsmiles · 23/08/2018 10:43

Well yes, biologically, of course she is. Surrogates don't parent themselves though, do they, they have babies for other people. So it would be a bit strange to have her in the advert too if she doesn't want to be a parent.
You'd have the people parenting the baby in it. Tom and his husband are the parents to the baby in that respect.

Fattymcfaterson · 23/08/2018 10:47

Really?? Do we know for certainnit was her egg used? She may be a biological mother. She may not be.
But what she definatly isn't, is a parent.

OutPinked · 23/08/2018 10:50

They have lots and lots of ambassadors, I see them spread across Instagram. They’re clearly desperately trying to keep the company alive, Aldi are making them lose business.

OrchidInTheSun · 23/08/2018 10:57

I don't know if her egg was used or not but she carried the baby for 9 months and the child was grown in her body. She's the baby's biological mother, not just a host womb.

Good point.

Agree, surrogates aren't the parents. I personally couldn't do it, but wouldn't judge those who do. They have babies for others not for themselves, they're not the parent.

Fromage · 23/08/2018 11:19

But the surrogate didn't want the baby. She wanted Tom Daley and his dh to have it. That's why she was pregnant in the first place. So how is she the baby's mother?

Sparklesocks · 23/08/2018 11:30

So OP you framed this thread as outrage that a woman hadn't been chosen as the brand ambassador (despite there being dozens of celeb women ambassadors before), but really it's about you not agreeing with Tom and his husband using a surrogate...?

abacucat · 23/08/2018 11:33

Yep when brands want to show how forward thinking they are, they get a gay male couple in. Lesbians are incredibly rare in adverts.

Celticlassie · 23/08/2018 11:34

I'm only really disappointed if it means the adverts are changed from some of the lovely ones recently. I loved the one with the wee premature baby getting home from hospital. It makes me cry just thinking about it.

abacucat · 23/08/2018 11:38

And yes the surrogate is the babies mother. Words such as surrogate can not erase reality.

Juells · 23/08/2018 11:40

And yes the surrogate is the babies mother.

Naw, she's just a uterus-haver.

NerrSnerr · 23/08/2018 11:45

Yet people don't start threads about heterosexual couples who use surrogates do they? All we know is that people who moan about gay men using surrogates are absolutely not sexist or homophobic.
