Tom Daley to be new face of Pampers

Women have never been good enough to be the face of a brand. But in a brave and stunning move for equality , Pampers have picked Daley and Black as perfect brand ambassadors

Because he's been mentioned in this threat obviously Confused and I don't like him because he comes across as a smarmy spolit little tit, who also happens to cheat on his husband (multiple times)

LostInShoebiz · 23/08/2018 07:03

How do you know it’s cheating? They might have an open relationship.

Sisgal · 23/08/2018 07:05

Because he came out in some newspaper to apologise for cheating

MyBrexitUnicornDied · 23/08/2018 07:05

So we will get adverts of men changing nappies? Good as there are still some men who refuse to change their kids' nappies

Totally agree with this. Definite benefits from having a male embassabor

HelpmeobiMN · 23/08/2018 07:07

What an absurd criticism. It’s actively hurtful to women for them to always be the face of baby brands (and for that matter, cleaning brands). It reinforces the message that the domestic sphere is women’s work, when we should be fighting for men taking equal responsibility. Having men advertise baby brands is a really good thing.

Also - it would have taken you literally seconds of googling to find out that pampers have had female celebrities advertise them before. Whether you intended it that way or not it is bigoted for you to post your knee-jerk reaction about Tom Daley without doing the bare minimum of research first.

Helpmeobi

I'd buy that if we saw the husbands of those famous women in those adverts. As I said before, this does nothing for women. It's lovely fluffy virtue-signalling.

GetAwayFromHer · 23/08/2018 07:11

And if you are taking a gay rights perspective, do you think they are tripping over themselves to find lesbian couple? No. Because that's just women being women

HelpmeobiMN · 23/08/2018 07:13

The fact that we didn’t see their husbands is the whole point - they weren’t seen as relevant enough to the brand to be included, because changing nappies isn’t seen as something men are responsible for. Having a male brand ambassador changes that, and if you think Tom Daley somehow doesn’t count as a dad because he’s gay, that’s just straightforwardly homophobic. Not to mention that representation for gay parents matters in its own right, even if it isn’t directly for the benefit of women.

Headinthedrawer · 23/08/2018 07:14

I think this is great. It wasn't that long ago thst it was illegal to be gay and now we are living in an inclusive time where all sorts of families and sexualities are accepted.Accept on mumsnet.

Warpdrive · 23/08/2018 07:14

@getawayfromher you have made me really consider it. Yes I think I agree with you that it is virtue signalling.

HelpmeobiMN · 23/08/2018 07:15

I would love to see a lesbian couple and I agree that lesbians are even more underrepresented in the media than gay men - the intersection of homophobia and misogyny hits lesbians doubly hard and it’s a huge problem. I would love to see pampers addressing that.

In the meantime, however, I don’t believe the solution is for them to only ever advertise using heterosexual women.

GetAwayFromHer · 23/08/2018 07:16

Helpme

No. He's a man. But there's no woman there to do it for him. And in the majority of household where there is a woman there to do it for them, women do it for them. That's my point.

Also re gay representation: see my point about lesbians. Of which there are many many more child-rearing couples. Never seen a lesbian couple on a nappy advert.

But just throw out accusations if you like

John Legend...for pampers

HelpmeobiMN · 23/08/2018 07:17

We can’t just write off all representation of gays in the media as virtue signalling - that’s just another way of continuing a long and shameful history of asking the gay community to stay hidden from sight.

GetAwayFromHer · 23/08/2018 07:18

Warpdrive

Thanks

But you don't want to join my gang. I'm homophobic Wink

GetAwayFromHer · 23/08/2018 07:20

aw nest Not joining? No worries. I'll cope

GetAwayFromHer · 23/08/2018 07:21

Helpme

I don't.

I do in this case

SoupDragon · 23/08/2018 07:22

It's lovely fluffy virtue-signalling.

Or maybe they’re the most high profile couple who have just become parents and who agreed to do it.

GetAwayFromHer · 23/08/2018 07:24

Soup

That is possibly true. I am sure there are others if you look hard but Daley is indeed hard to miss. And that's my point. Advertisers need to look harder

HelpmeobiMN · 23/08/2018 07:24

I do in this case

Fine. Not everyone is an ally. But we should try to be. It’s perfectly possible to support and fight for and uphold the rights of women, and also do the same for the gay community. PARTICULARLY when the reasons for our oppression are the same. In this case, the reason women and gay men are both prejudiced by attitudes towards child rearing is because it’s seen as women’s work. It benefits us both to overthrow that assumption.

SoupDragon · 23/08/2018 07:26

Never seen a lesbian couple on a nappy advert.

So, you’re just pissed off that gay women didn’t do it first?

SoupDragon · 23/08/2018 07:27

Daley is indeed hard to miss. And that's my point. Advertisers need to look harder

Well no, they don’t need to look harder at all. They’ve got their high profile new-parent couple. All they want is high profile.

GetAwayFromHer · 23/08/2018 07:27

Yes, it is, and I do. At this point I'm centering women

Care to take back you homphobia accusation?
