To think we need to talk about this specific serious Brexit issue without being hidden away?

Leaked emails between NHS England and NHS Providers have shown that a no deal Brexit (Nrexit?) will have a real risk of impact on services. Stockpiling of equipment and drugs seems to be the main point of discussion - this seems to be main topic of conversation at my hospital and my colleagues are dumbfounded that this is what we are coming to.

We as a community, as nation, a society need to talk about this. The NHS is something to be proud of, is something they banged on about whilst campaigning, is something fit for advertising on a bus! How on earth can this country let be impacted in such a dangerous and aggressive way?

Look, I get why the whole of AIBU can’t be taken us by one topic but equally Brexit, particularly a no-deal Brexit is going to impact our lives in ways in which we can’t imagine. This topic needs to be discussed on the widest forum and on this site that is AIBU. There are lots of sub forums for clothes, pets, relationships and those topics don’t get rerouted elsewhere.

reading the T&Cs on their flight tickets for next summer showing that insurance will not pay out if flights are grounded due to a Hard Brexit
Even the US embassy abassador was shocked to learn he won't be able to fly to US after crash out. Grin

Crash out means crash out.

bellinisurge · 22/08/2018 10:29

"the cause of the economic consequences of Brexit is people 'talking down' Britain, not Brexit itself."
Rubbish. People talking doesn't interrupt the food supply. Brexit will cause problems with the food supply because the Just In time system that is intrinsic to our food distribution network relies on international agreements such as the one we have with the rest of the EU. How the feck do you think your Spanish tomatoes get here?

Notonthestairs · 22/08/2018 10:50

Brexit is a mess due to Tory party divisions (which impact on what the civil service can practically do) and an ineffective opposition - not because people talk about it.

I'm not taking the blame for the impact of the shitshow at Westminster. It's not my job to talk up something which I don't believe in.

foggetyfog · 22/08/2018 10:58

If there is no deal we're totally screwed. The irony is that the politicians promoting Brexit, Johnson, Farage, Rees Mogg are as posh as you can get and so rich they won't personally feel the pain. It's the "normal" people who believed their lies who are going to lose their jobs at which point the Tories will blame the EU and Labour will say it's all the Tories fault (which it is but Labour should be trying to stop Brexit before it happens, not hope to get in power after it all goes wrong).
Utter utter madness and so sad for our country and our children. Yes no doubt we can tighten our belts and sing Rule Brittannia but there isn't a war on and the pain is self inflicted. If i could emigrate I would.

theduchessstill · 22/08/2018 11:19

I know bellinisurge Hmm I was quoting someone else and trying to convey my disagreement with that view. The bold failed but I think it's fairly obvious what I think from what I've said after the quote. I'm well aware how my Spanish tomatoes get here thanks Hmm.

Could someone post the link for the change.org petition? Haven't signed it yet.

There's this one ^ as well which is more focused on the rule breaking of referendum number one. If there is a round two both sides need to pull their socks up and stick to the rules.

RedneckStumpy

I think civil unrest it extremely likely, civil war is certainly possible. I would not be at all surprised if Russia airdrops weapons to the leavers.

The NHS is a lost cause. It won’t survive Brexit. I would be planning to treat my own wounds. Hospitals A. Won’t be functioning. B. Places you don’t want to be with the coming violence.

Possibly THE most delusional Brexit comment ever. And there are many to choose from.

bellinisurge · 22/08/2018 13:28

@AmIUnderstandingThisCorrectly
Redneck Stumpy lives in the US - guessing the MidWest but I might be wrong- and their perspective is from there.
Although they are, as I understand it, from the UK, I don't know if they were here to vote in the referendum.
Frankly, the US has its own internal problems which is a discussion for another day.

AmIUnderstandingThisCorrectly · 22/08/2018 13:48

It makes no difference Bellinisurge.

The idea that Russia might "airdrop weapons to leave voters" is quite frankly preposterous. That kind of hysterical catastrophising is incredibly dangerous both on a personal and societal level. People need to calm down, and get a grip. Stockpile if you want to, be prepared if you want to - fair enough, nothing wrong with that...but stop whipping people up into a frenzy with wild theories about what might happen. Here's a novel concept - "wait and see". Wait and see what actually happens.

bellinisurge · 22/08/2018 13:54

@AmIUnderstandingThisCorrectly - @RedneckStumpy gave their view. I explained it was from overseas to the best of my knowledge. There have been far more feverish bits of nonsense posted on here and elsewhere.
I agree that we should wait and see but I am certainly prepping- I'm a prepper, that's what I do. Have to get through the winter here first - been snowed in pretty much every year for the past 10 years in my little corner of northern suburbia.

seventhgonickname · 22/08/2018 13:58

Things are already dire in the NHS from an employee point of view but I will continue to work, people will continue to be sick.European will still be able to work for the NHS just as non Europeans, who are the bigger part of the non British work force.
I will stock pile Australian wine but refuse to panic and will deal with what comes.
Stirring unrest and panic serves no one but I would just like the Government to actually work together although there's not a lot you can negotiate against a 'non' to every proposal.

bellinisurge · 22/08/2018 14:12

If what they propose is unrealistic and potentially damaging to the EU, of course the other side say No.

HavingALittleBabyToolshed · 22/08/2018 14:29

These threads are pointless.
I’m glad this thread was brought back to AIBU though because it just proves 100’s of ‘new’ people are not going to come along eager to discuss Brexit.

Probably because everyone on them is so aggressive.

I’ll leave you to it.

prettybird · 22/08/2018 15:14

I've seen "new" names on this thread. Plus it's not just about the people who post on it; it's also about the people who read this and threads like this (when they aren't hidden away) and learn things that they didn't otherwise know.

Thank you for starting it! Flowers

cucumbergin · 22/08/2018 15:19

Hellooo new person here who doesn't visit the Brexit section. I am interested to hear more but I assume (perhaps wrongly) that the Brexit section will be full of rentatrolls?

Hazardswan · 22/08/2018 15:20

@Havingalittlebabytoolshed (what a name!) Star GinGinStar

Hazardswan · 22/08/2018 15:22

cucumbergin there's lots of articles on the Westminster threads in the brexit section. Sometimes a bit squabbling on the other threads there but nothing major IMO.

Hazardswan · 22/08/2018 15:29

The long running Westministender threads are good for informing yourself. Depends on your viewpoint though Wink

We tend to see off trolls by diverting into gardening and cooking tips (eg how to make plum or redcurrant gin GrinGin)

PineappleSunrise · 22/08/2018 22:53

I really don't mind if the whole world doesn't want to actually post on this thread. Given how quasi-religious the tone of the chat can be, I don't blame people for wanting to sit this out and watch others do the running.

I am happy to keep asking the core questions that everyone should be thinking about:

  • what are we ACTUALLY going to get from this process?
  • what will the effects be on jobs, the NHS, and our children's opportunities to get on in the world over the next 10, 20, 30 (and yes, 50) years?
  • why are there so many links to Russia when it comes to Leave campaign spending? What is there interest in all this?
  • if most our issues were domestic, how does leaving the EU materially benefit us all?
Ta1kinpeace · 23/08/2018 14:11

Good questions that deserve answers

TheElementsSong · 23/08/2018 14:26

Excellent questions Pineapple!
