To think we need to talk about this specific serious Brexit issue without being hidden away?

Leaked emails between NHS England and NHS Providers have shown that a no deal Brexit (Nrexit?) will have a real risk of impact on services. Stockpiling of equipment and drugs seems to be the main point of discussion - this seems to be main topic of conversation at my hospital and my colleagues are dumbfounded that this is what we are coming to.

We as a community, as nation, a society need to talk about this. The NHS is something to be proud of, is something they banged on about whilst campaigning, is something fit for advertising on a bus! How on earth can this country let be impacted in such a dangerous and aggressive way?

Look, I get why the whole of AIBU can’t be taken us by one topic but equally Brexit, particularly a no-deal Brexit is going to impact our lives in ways in which we can’t imagine. This topic needs to be discussed on the widest forum and on this site that is AIBU. There are lots of sub forums for clothes, pets, relationships and those topics don’t get rerouted elsewhere.

All those people saying 'project fear'... Sorry this is utter rubbish...yes let's just ignore experts who are discussing real problems if we crash out....

We KNOW what we have now... Post Brexit is a likely dystopia...
There will be very real issues in event of NREXIt.... Usual Rules will cease and supply chains will be broken...

If anyone is in any doubt... Watch this

Echo2 · 21/08/2018 08:59

I don’t get this ‘hidden away’ thing.
Brexit threads aren’t hidden away, they come up in active conversations just like any other thread.

As if ‘big pharma’ will let Brexit stand in their way.

Big pharma will have no choice if the government doesn't do a deal that covers the import of drugs.

The NHS has already been screwed by Brexit as they procure so much equipment/medication from overseas and the fall in the £ has made everything more expensive.

Guienne · 21/08/2018 09:06

There's a whole, active topic for this sort of stuff. Just like S&B, or relationships. Only the most popular subjects actually have active, go-to topics. Why in earth do you want to 'devalue' discussions on Brexit by a whiny-sounding AIBU??

Not true. Trans threads are amongst the most active ones yet MN have taken a specific decision not to put them into a separate topic. I agree that Brexit needs to be discussed on boards like this one: it's going to have a massive effect on all our lives and the government and pro-Brexiters would love to have issues like this quietly buried.

IrenetheQuaint · 21/08/2018 09:06

Yes I don't really understand the complaints about threads being hidden away - don't most people use Active Conversations to find threads they want to read?

Also, I don't think changing thread placement will have any effect on those Leavers who don't want to engage with the current situation.

CressidaEgg · 21/08/2018 09:09

You sound like my FIL who is still insisting the German car manufacturers will come to our rescue. Yep - that's happening.

borntobequiet - thanks for the links.

MrsMWA · 21/08/2018 09:13

Yup I’m alright Jack. I have no social conscience, I am thick and racist.

Echo2 · 21/08/2018 09:16

And who exactly are you trying to reach?
Do you really think there’s anyone on mumsnet who doesn’t know we’re leaving the EU? Or only find out what’s going on via mumsnet? Brexit is all over the news. Hmm

CressidaEgg · 21/08/2018 09:18

MrsMWA - I didn't imply you were either.

Moomicorn · 21/08/2018 09:22

Historically, revolution, rebellion, civil war and revolt are how we do things as a country. Iceni-Boudicca, Magna Carta (revolt by nobles), Peasant’s Revolt, Welsh Revolt, Wars of the Roses, Civil War/English Revolution, Irish Rebellion (various and frequent, culminating in war of Independence), Jacobite Uprising, Orange Revolution, Chartists, Suffragettes, Wars/Campaigns leading to independence in former colonies, Poll Tax Riots.

All these things still have a lasting and tangible impact on our political landscape. We tend just refer to successful rebellions etc as “history” and or “a war of independence”. Often even those revolts and uprisings that are unsuccessful for the leadership (e.g. Peasant’s Revilt, Jacobite Uprising) haveblasting effects and consequences in line with the original aims and goals.

MingeUterusMingeMingeYoni · 21/08/2018 09:58

The comment about hidden away is entirely sensible. This is an issue that's pertinent to everyone, not just those who are particularly interested in the topic and thus would seek out the EU referendum board. Thus, it's better on the higher traffic boards.

HQ pursue an entirely lopsided policy when it comes to removing threads from AIBU and Chat to the relevant subforums. We have, for example, dedicated SAHP and WOHP sections, but I'm not sure there's ever been an AIBU thread on the issue moved to either of those. Yet we routinely see threads moved to the EU section.

It's a fair point about not reaching people who are determined to bury their heads in the sand and will go to great lengths to continue to do so, but inbetween there's a middle ground.

AnyaMumsnet · 21/08/2018 10:21

Hi there everyone,

As the Brexit area is pretty active anyway, we're going to move this over.

Moussemoose · 21/08/2018 10:26

The Brexit area is busy with people who are invested.

The whole point of this thread is that it goes in AIBU and might attract lurkers or those who wouldn't seek out Brexit threads.

But hey ho it's not like it's an important topic.

Ffs

SwedishEdith · 21/08/2018 10:28

Quite. Loads of people hide/hid the Brexit topic because "it's boring". Very difficult to have any meaningful discussions if threads keep getting put there.

TheNumberfaker · 21/08/2018 10:29

But this isn’t a Brexit thread? It’s a ‘should we be hiding threads away in the Brexit topic’ thread.

ShovingLeopard · 21/08/2018 10:32

I also think it's a bad idea to move the thread. The only people who read the Brexit board are those who are already engaged with the issue. The whole point of this thread is to inform people who are NOT engaged fully to realise this is (yet another detrimental) consequence of Brexit.

Poor show Mumsnet.

Moussemoose · 21/08/2018 10:32

It's like a dirty secret no one wants to face.

If we hide it away it won't happen.

Echo2 · 21/08/2018 10:44

But it’s not a meaningful discussion you want, it’s a bun fight

SleepFreeZone · 21/08/2018 10:49

I thought the No Deal conversation was the governments way of basically threatening to throw their toys out the pram unless the EU agrees to everything we want. The equivalent of me telling my DS that unless he tidies his toys I shall put them in the bin. I know the most tha will happen is I’ll stick them in the garage but he tidies up anyhow because he knows mummy is a bit of a crazy lady.

If the No Deal actually happens we are so very fucked I just have up believe it won’t.

Moussemoose · 21/08/2018 11:05

Echo2 I am desperate for a meaningful discussion. Longing for a meaningful discussion. A meaningful discussion would make me happy.

If someone could come up with 3 good reasons to leave the EU I wouldn't support Brexit but I could understand it.

By being in AIBU someone might come along and say something that makes sense.

We are now back on the Brexit board where the sovereignty nonsense has been dismissed, the EU is undemocratic has been roundly disproved (multiple times), the economy will pick up and we can trade with other people has been thoroughly trounced.....

Go on Echo2 come up with a really good pro Brexit point.

But I know the response - you don't have to, Brexit won the referendum, it's going to happen so get over it.

And now hide it away in a cupboard and we can pretend it's not happening.

I caught her once bundling the sheets out at 4am - turns out she lived through the siege of Sarajevo in a basement when she was a kid and still had nightmares. That was 1992-96
Sad
A horrendous and accidental war, started by untramelled racists and political opportunists. A strong, peaceful, multicultural and prosperous Yugslavia was alway going to be a threat to some.............

HavingALittleBabyToolshed · 21/08/2018 12:05

Yes thanks ever so much, I’ll put it all behind me and never think about it again. Silly old me.

Oh really? Nope.
I want a discussion that isn’t buried away in an area which is targeted over and over and over by the same voices saying exactly the same thing.
