to think his behaviour was pretentious/ toffy??

I've been on a few dates with a guy who ordered a bottle of wine at a restaurant and accepted waiters offer to try it, he swirled it on the glass then smelt it... then .. finally tasted it!! (I know this is the correct way to order /taste wine lol but it made me cringe??)

When I then picked up my glass and went to drink it he said "smell it first"... I wanted to throw it at him lol!!
.. am I over reacting???

It's only pretentious is he is doing it for show with a bog standard bottle of house red. If it's a decent wine and he has had training in wine tasting and knows what to focus on then not it's not pretentious.

Like if you go to an art gallery with someone who spends half an hour contemplating a piece of art - if they are having deep and complex thoughts inspired by the art then that's fine. If they have mistaken the gallery lightswitch for art and are pretending to contemplate it while actually compiling a mental shopping list then that's evidence of idiocy.

Bert .. the tasting bit was fine it was the swirling... then the smelling... then finally after what seemed like a cringey age... finally the tasting!.. it just seemed ott.. pretentious but maybe pretentious is harsh.. That's why I'm asking for opinions lol

Pretty normal to me. Most sommeliers do this. I always smell wine before drinking. Would find it odd to just swig it back without doing so.

Fairly normal if it’s a decent bottle of wine with a cork.

Corked wine tastes disgusting, you definitely don’t want to be stuck with it because tasting was “too pretentious” as opposed to “practical”.

What inqui said... Give us some more context, what wine was it, did he seem like he was interested in wine/food in general?

I've been to several private wine tastings as it's a passion of mine and my husbands (we live in an area with lots of vineyards and amazing wines), so I admit to doing this in a restaurant if it's a lovely bottle. I understand what the different accents in the smells mean and how this can differ from wine to wine, I understand what the colour means etc. and I enjoy getting to know different wines.

Sounds like he is really into wine... It's impossible not to do those things when youve learnt what they can tell you about the wine.

Also the swilling... If you aren't doing it you are missing out!! Smell before and after the swilling and you will see what I mean.

Ps.. doesn't work on echo falls ;)

Tasting wine isn't just so you can say mmm lovely it's so you can test if it's off so smelling it first would be wise because off wine is fucking rank!

I suppose really it depends on how he did it and if you thought he was just showing off rather than actually tasting/smelling it for a reason.

Stirrer .. no need for the insult.. do you have low self esteem? I have a degree in law! I'm actually quite bright... I just found it came across a little pretentious in the particular situation.
It was a £20 bottle of wine.. he made such a fuss of it when I came to try it I just took a sip! Him telling me I should smell and taste it first wasn't necessary imo.. thanks for those who made sensible comments / gave views without feeling the need to hurl insults btw!
