Do you regret your tattoos

Been wanting a tattoo for years but I know I'm a fickle soul. I'll go through a phase of wanting a certain theme and it passes. I'd like a tattoo for a tattoos sake, but would hate to regret it. Does anyone regret their tattoos how long did you wait until you decided on one?

no regrets at all

bring on the next 1

Effic · 11/08/2018 01:53

Yes!
itis same story for me too. I had mine done when I was 15 when I was a complete rebel without a cause and thought I was cool! 🙄 This was years before it became a fashion thing that everyone has. Like you I’m now pissed off with my younger idiot self and stuck with the tramp stamp which is now also dulled with age. Keep hoping to have the money spare to get the damn thing removed.

vodkaredbullgirl · 11/08/2018 01:58

had my last 1 at 41 when i split with my ex partner and 39 when i split with my ex hubby. Not been in with another relationship for over 8 yrs, so no more exes lol

firsttimemamaa · 11/08/2018 02:09

I've got 6 tattoos, most are hidden, apart from I have two smallish ones on the inside of both ankles so not that visible.

1 matches a friend which I no longer speak to
2 "mean/represent" something

I got all my tattoos under the age of 19 (I'm now 25 and have felt this way since I was 21ish) and given the chance I wouldn't get them again. I have 1 I desperately want to cover up (I got it on my 18th birthday and got it for the sake of it) but I don't know what with and I worry I'll regret the cover up.

My partner is covered in tattoos and I love his, I like tattoos on other people just not so fond on mine anymore. Like you I go through phases and now that phase is over!

I want a tattoo for my DD. Her initials are OJ so my partner got an orange juice carton tattooed on him, he also come back and surprised me with a tattoo to represent me, I was completely shocked as he'd previously called other people for doing things like that. I was going to get a little orange (I've found a dainty one which I really like) tattooed on me to match his but I don't know where. I'm sitting on this idea as I don't want to feel the same about this tattoo as I do my others. I also feel obliged to get one for him but as much as I love him I don't want to do that, he's said he doesn't mind if I don't but I'll still feel bad.

My advice is to think about what your getting & where your getting it for a while. Research your artist, can they do the style you want, if they can fit you in straight away that's a bad sign, ask for multiple options of the same image or text, maybe ask them to draw up a stencil and wear it for the day to see if you like it?
If your getting it for getting it sake I think you'll regret it eventually? Or you might love it and keep adding to your body, I don't think every tattoo needs to mean something!

strong80 · 11/08/2018 02:10

i LOVE my tattoos. mine have been designed by a very close family member, are unique and have meaning.
would never get anything out of a book. ever.
can be covered if required. in fact sometimes i forget i have them, although that’s maybe because they are a piece of me.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 11/08/2018 02:26

What's a tramp stamp?

vodkaredbullgirl · 11/08/2018 02:51

i need to be in another ended relationship before my next tattoo lol

Do you regret your tattoos
Greenyogagirl · 11/08/2018 03:02

Yes, honestly if they weren’t on my back I would have carved them out by now, they’re not even bad I just think they’re pointless, I love tattoos on others but really wish I hadn’t got any

littlebillie · 11/08/2018 03:24

I don't have any but was in an environment where they were becoming very popular. I think I was old enough not to fear peer pressure and I also know how fickle o can be

BetterEatCheese · 11/08/2018 03:27

Nope! One is ridiculous and ruined by pregnancy too! They are a very good reminder of what I was like in my teens and I don't want to forget. I like what they represent

NightRaven52 · 11/08/2018 03:40

Only regret one but that's because it was terribly done. Luckily it's on my thigh so easy to cover up most of the time. Don't regret any of the others (7) despite being told numerous times when I was younger that I would.

scarbados · 11/08/2018 05:01

No. Don't regret any of the 12 I have.

SteviaStephanie · 11/08/2018 05:41

DH hates his - which he got at 16 - and we call them his “shit tattoos”, never just his tattoos.

But friends who had them done later in life, sober, and who picked a meaningful or pretty tattoo, still love them. So I think if you’re careful in choice of tattoo and location on the body, you’ll be fine!

BlueBug45 · 11/08/2018 06:03

I've got one on the back of my shoulder at 21 in black ink. I deliberately got it there as it was a place I could easily cover up with clothes, was less inclined to stretch with weight gain as it is over bone and over 20 years later it makes no difference to my life. In actually forget I have it until it's summer or I have to dress up.

I was talked out of getting more in my 20s by a few friends who got more than one tattoo themselves as they had to hide theirs for work and the more tattoos you have the more difficult it is. Also they had some coloured ones and were aware they would need them reinked in a couple of decades. My friends got them on bony parts as some of them did or had done care work, so had seen what age does to bodies e.g. dolphins on stomaches/bums turned into whales due to pregnancy/weight gain.

JacquesHammer · 11/08/2018 08:22

I wonder if the fashion will end. I know everyone gets them done and they're not edgy anymore. I do sometimes look a tattooed people and think your going to show your age when your older by your fashion fad tattoos

HOUSE!

Duchessgummybuns · 11/08/2018 08:30

Possibly outing, but I got Happy Mrs Chicken from Peppa Pig as a dare. Grin However, my only regret is that I don’t have the money to get my sleeve finished at present.

Hardyloveit · 11/08/2018 08:36

I've got around 10 half were impulsive decided on the day or in that week. I only regret one and am in the process of getting it lasered off (which is soooooo painful!) then covered up with a design I've wanted for a long time.

FrayedHem · 11/08/2018 08:41

I have a tramp stamp. I'm not embarrassed about it and don't regret it at all. I'm nothing like I was back then (early 00's) but I don't understand why I'm supposed to be ashamed of showing my age. It's quite obvious from the rest of me I'm in my 40's!

dementedma · 11/08/2018 08:46

my mother got a tiny blue butterfly tattoo near her ankle for her 60th birthday. It still looks great.
(Recently for her 83rd birthday she had a spin on the back of a Harley with a load of tooled up bikers but that's another story!)

MaggieAndHopey · 11/08/2018 10:04

"I wonder if the fashion will end."

Well, the 'fashion' has been going since about 4,000 years BC so I think it's safe to say it's got a few years in it yet.

MissusGeneHunt · 11/08/2018 10:10

I've got 4, all private, and I don't regret any of them. Got a brilliant tattooist who recolours them if needed. They are part of me.

Alwayscommuting · 11/08/2018 10:22

So far no I don't regret them and I have plans for more extensive work. They make me so much more confident. I used to cover up completely but not I like to show them off. Most workplaces are ok with them unless customer facing but I don't have any on my hands or face so I can cover if required. When I'm old I'll look at them and remember the life I've lived and the things I've done.

KC225 · 11/08/2018 11:14

Maggieandhope Although tattoos have been around for centuries, they most definitely they do follow a fashion and you can 'age' them quite easily. The upper arm arm slave bangles - mid to late 90s, tramp stamps - early noughties, Japanese symbols or script looks very dated now as will full and half sleeves in a few years.

MaggieAndHopey · 11/08/2018 11:18

Oh sure, there are fashions within tattooing - I don't think anyone would dispute that.

WaitrosePigeon · 11/08/2018 11:25

Yes I do.

It shows I lack maturely and the capacity to make wise decisions for the long term. It lowers my intelligence.

I am getting them lasered off.
