Night out with friends- what am I meant to do?

AIBU to think I can't win here?

Invited out for drinks with mutual friends. Said friends live about 45 mins from us by car.

Neither me nor DP are big drinkers ìf not driving well each have 4 or 5 drinks at most. Obviously if driving we'd have 1 if that.

Public transport would take at least 2 hours each way and we'd have to leave at 10-10.30 to get last trains back. A taxi would be at least £50 each way which we can't afford.

I offered to drive. However my car is old and has no aircon. So DP clearly thinks it's an empty offer and say 'obviously I will have to drive then'. DPs car has aircon. I'm not insured to drive it though.

I'm not sure what other solution I can give! There's nowhere to stay local to friends and DP wouldn't want to stay over anyway.

What else would you suggest if you were me?

is this in the UK?

BackforGood · 05/08/2018 19:53

I realise this is the biggest non-problem ever, but would love to now what the OP's Pricess dp deigned to choose.

Neither me nor DP are big drinkers ìf not driving well each have 4 or 5 drinks at most.
I guess I'm the only one who thinks that 4 or 5 drinks is a lot

Glad it's not just me.......

Are you fully comp? Have you checked your insurance policy? I'm insured to drive others cars on my policy, I often drive my dads but I'm not insured directly on his insurance....

You can drive other people's cars, but not one registered at your address - that would clearly be just avoiding being named on the other Premium, and isn't allowed.

Jamboree05 · 05/08/2018 19:54

Your DP really needs to give his head a wobble. I've driven 4 hours today in a car with no air con. I used this beautiful, new fangled contraption called windows to keep myself cool. Seriously, this is so beyond a non issue, it's laughable.

BackforGood · 05/08/2018 19:54

Oh yes, and of course there will be enough fresh air to cool the car with the windows open. the 31 degrees is just whilst it is stationary with the windows done up, before you start moving.
I've somehow managed all Summer with no aircon, without collapsing in a heap.

Anonnymouse54321 · 05/08/2018 20:00

This is hilarious. For the utter non problem and some of the responses.

I think you may be someone I work with. She would probably come up with something like this as she is yet to grasp 'life'. Age is a factor, hence me thinking you are definitely young.

God knows what goes on when there is a serious discussion like who pays the bills, should you get married or should you ttc!

A lack of aircon has to be the stupidest non issue I've ever read on here, and there have been some doozies.

Anonnymouse54321 · 05/08/2018 20:03

"You can drive other people's cars, but not one registered at your address - that would clearly be just avoiding being named on the other Premium, and isn't allowed."

Shit, is that true!? I am fully comp and thought I would be able to drive DH's car with my insurance? I've only done it once though. I checked my insurance and it didn't say anything about it not being a car at your address, only that it covers third party only.

Fiveletters · 05/08/2018 20:20

I can’t believe I read all this and I still don’t know what happened Confused I also can’t believe that I even care

jade9390 · 05/08/2018 20:42

Just Wow! No idea how you get through the day without. 30mph moving still creates a breeze

Iseveryusernametaken · 05/08/2018 20:44

This is hilarious. I was on my 3rd car before I had electric windows (still only the front) and 4th for air conditioning. When I was 18 I perfected the art of turning a corner on a hill, winding down the window and smoking a Fab whilst simultaneously letting out the manual choke. Not sure how I coped. I didn't even have an intermittent windscreen wipe in my first 2 cars 😂

Iseveryusernametaken · 05/08/2018 20:45

I think autocorrect censored me. I didn't smoke a fab!! 😂

neveradullmoment99 · 05/08/2018 20:57

Sorry OP but this really is a non-issue. If he doesn't want to go in your car, he has to drive. End of. Wtf does he expect you to say? Let him sort it out!

busyhonestchildcarer · 05/08/2018 21:00

Go without him and send pics so he sees what great time you had

LotsToThinkOf · 05/08/2018 21:08

Ah I wish DH and I had these discussions rather than ones about, well you know, grown up and important things.

DP sounds like a spoilt twat, LTB before it gets worse. And it will. HTH.

Considering this is such a boring thread I'm dying to know what actually happened!

Abra1de · 05/08/2018 21:30

Out of interest if four or five drinks isn’t a lot, what is! 🤔

GabsAlot · 05/08/2018 21:36

i love my aircon i really do but if someone offered to drive with none id be grateful for thne offer

but its not about that is it yur dh is a twat

Flowerylampshade · 05/08/2018 21:39

There might not be a breeze but surely you driving and moving the car creates a breeze?!

Gabilan · 05/08/2018 21:46

In my 20s I'd do pub crawls covering a dozen pubs with a drink in each, though in some that would just be half a pint. In my 40s I'd keel over before I was half way round.

PerverseConverse · 05/08/2018 22:03

Well, after reading some very serious posts where people's lives have been totally changed forever, this has provided some humorous relief Grin I love the trivial posts of those who love a bit of drama of an evening. It's better than TV.

PerverseConverse · 05/08/2018 22:08

Awww and now I've just been reminded about how when I was 18 my boyfriend's car had a broken heater. No heat whatsoever came out but our love kept us warm on those long winter nights sat smooching in the dark in the Peak District.
OP have a big fight about this and then the frostiness between you will keep you cool and it won't matter that you don't have air con.

notsohippychick · 05/08/2018 22:19

How was the evening in the sweat box/non sweat box?!!

I’ve never read anything like it. I’m strangely enthralled but this thread, in a kind of “people are bizarre” way.

For the record 4-5 drinks IS a lot.

Annette69 · 05/08/2018 22:22

This is a non story surely ?

PerverseConverse · 05/08/2018 22:25

@notsohippychick that's what I thought too. I'd be pissed as a Gary if I drank that much.

PerverseConverse · 05/08/2018 22:26
  • fart ffs not Gary!
Scabetty · 05/08/2018 22:30

Steady, pissed as a Gary sounds seriously hammered 😂😂

Fiveletters · 05/08/2018 22:32

lolling at pissed as a Gary!
