Night out with friends- what am I meant to do?

AIBU to think I can't win here?

Invited out for drinks with mutual friends. Said friends live about 45 mins from us by car.

Neither me nor DP are big drinkers ìf not driving well each have 4 or 5 drinks at most. Obviously if driving we'd have 1 if that.

Public transport would take at least 2 hours each way and we'd have to leave at 10-10.30 to get last trains back. A taxi would be at least £50 each way which we can't afford.

I offered to drive. However my car is old and has no aircon. So DP clearly thinks it's an empty offer and say 'obviously I will have to drive then'. DPs car has aircon. I'm not insured to drive it though.

I'm not sure what other solution I can give! There's nowhere to stay local to friends and DP wouldn't want to stay over anyway.

What else would you suggest if you were me?

You don’t need aircon in the evening at night.

LakieLady · 04/08/2018 20:38

Doesn't your own car insurance cover you to drive other people's cars, OP? Mine does, and has done for years. DP's does, too.

I think your DP is being a twat though. I suspect he doesn't want to go and is being PA about it.

InspectorIkmen · 04/08/2018 20:48

This is simple to solve really.

Stop being a pair of drama llamas.
Fuck off the invite in Death Valley
Stop arguing like a pair of dicks on speed
Step out of the door, walk to the pub, make sure you wear plenty of Factor 50 especially at midnight.
Get pissed. Come home. Go the fuck to sleep.

Sorted.

tinytemper66 · 04/08/2018 22:40

So did you go out in the end? If so, who drove?

blueskypink · 04/08/2018 22:58

I don't know about the op, but 4 of us drove out to a country pub for a meal this evening- about half an hour away. It 's been 30 degrees here today. DH was driving and as we set off he said, "air con or windows?" We all said, "windows!"

itallmakessense · 04/08/2018 23:06

I don't think this can be a serious issue that two adults are actually discussing and need help on.

But if it is I suggest a magic carpet as your form of transport. Full aircon with low emissions and free too!! Enjoy your ride.

LaMainDeFatima · 05/08/2018 10:49

And what was the outcome?

Katherine2626 · 05/08/2018 17:30

If it's just a drink - not a special celebration meal, special get together etc. why not just give it a miss? It sounds like a hell of a lot of hassle for someone who doesn't drink much anyway, and there will surely be opportunities at a better and cooler time later? Why get into such a lot of arrangements and complications just for a drink?

Bibesia · 05/08/2018 18:20

Driving at 30 mph in the evening with the windows open will create a very pleasant breeze.

onanothertrain · 05/08/2018 18:25

Go on your own and stay over

exaltedwombat · 05/08/2018 18:25

I've never owned a car with aircon. I'm getting around just fine this hot summer. Don't be such a snowflake.

Commonpeoplelikeme · 05/08/2018 18:33

What happens when you guys have real problems? Seriously, this is ridiculous.

FASH84 · 05/08/2018 18:34

OP if you're fully comp are you not insured to drive any other insured vehicle?

faeriequeen · 05/08/2018 18:39

Haha! I've driven hundreds of thousands of miles over the years - I only realised my current car had aircon this summer. I just use the fans for heat and open the windows if it's hot. I am clearly just a peasant.

mum11970 · 05/08/2018 18:42

Not unless it is specified on your insurance. Many years ago you would be covered 3rd party on someone else’s car if you had fully comp insurance yourself. This is no longer standard and is unlikely unless she has specifically asked for it to be added to her policy.

mum11970 · 05/08/2018 18:46

Presume it’s irrelevant now anyway, as assume the op was going out last night and it was a pathetic problem to start with. Can’t travel in a car with no air con, bloomin snowflake! Absolutely ridiculous.

viques · 05/08/2018 18:49

Open the windows, put the heating controls to cold.

If necessary take a couple of cool boxes of ice, a few frozen icepacks, a battery operated fan, a hand held Japanese fan, a small ice floe mounted on a trailer , a squirty bottle filled with ice water, and a grip.

Icanttakemuchmore · 05/08/2018 18:57

Get a plug in portable fan. Problem solved

Tiggy321 · 05/08/2018 19:21

Let him drive his aircon car and then you can get really drunk!!! Or be the martyr and drive your car and not drink. Seriously, why is this even a discussion??

aspoonfulofyourownmedicine · 05/08/2018 19:33

Are you fully comp? Have you checked your insurance policy? I'm insured to drive others cars on my policy, I often drive my dads but I'm not insured directly on his insurance....

TwitterQueen1 · 05/08/2018 19:41

@MNHQ
I would seriously like to suggest that we have an 'Insomniacs Classics ' board for people who struggle to sleep for any reason whatsoever, and who need a really, really, boring thread that is so totally unimportant in the scheme of things that they can happily read it until they fall asleep either through sheer boredom or through trying to work out the ramifications of complete non-problems like this.. Wink Grin.

SubtitlesOn · 05/08/2018 19:43

Great idea Twitter GrinGrinGrinGrinGrin

Barbaro · 05/08/2018 19:48

How many accidents have you had that one night/weekend will cost £500 to pay for insurance for a car? Even a hire car wouldn't be that much.

Also I haven't used my air con this entire time during the heatwave. You can survive without it.

Mikklehaha · 05/08/2018 19:51

Could you suggest your boyfriend stop being such a drama queen? Either he gets in your car or he drives. Whining about it is pathetic.

MusingAboutCruising · 05/08/2018 19:51

I don't understand all this; I've never had a car with air con. Also, my insurance has always gone down when I've added a partner.

If it's a real problem, I would park the car somewhere shaded or spread newspaper or something over it to try to keep it cool in the day before it's used.

I think your DP is doing the equivalent of playing a weird tune and you're dancing to it. I would stop doing that.
