To feel terrified after reading the prepping for Brexit threads?

LittleNapRefuser · 28/07/2018 20:26

I have genuinely cried real tears of fear after reading the threads on prepping for Brexit today. I have a toddler and right now I am terrified of what is to come and their future after all this.

I don't really have anyone to talk to about this in 'real life' because most people I know aren't reading the news or don't seem to care.

Should I be terrified? Should I be scared for my baby's future? Can anyone reassure me or offer me an alternative perspective on all this. I don't want to to put my head in the sand but I feel really afraid.

Thanks bellini and Incarnation. I've had a Google and it seems the only plan for farmers so far is to have less paperwork which must be a great comfort to them.

bellinisurge · 29/07/2018 15:25

Op, no one is expecting you or anyone else to become a prepper. I am a prepper. It is a personal choice. I have what I hope are useful tips for anyone looking to put a bit extra by in case of food distribution problems (however short term). So do other preppers on the Prepper topic.
As with having a baby, you ask for tips that will make your life easier. That's all.

Roomba · 29/07/2018 15:35

Hmm, I'm not 'freaking the fuck out' but I am starting to get a bit worried about all this. I don't suppose the government will be increasing my Universal Credit payments (which are already so low I basically can't afford to feed all of us and regularly go without so my kids can eat) to cover the increase in prices for food due to scarcity? No, thought not. I can't stock up in advance really, even an extra couple of tins a week is a struggle right now. My employer certainly won;t be paying me more or giving me more hours, I've had them cut already as a fairly direct consequence of all this. Let's hope food banks are stocking up in advance too eh?

I probably sound ridiculous but I'm really not looking forward to Brexit given how bad thing already are for many people at the moment. We literally can't afford for it to go worse!

Also just looked up where my life essential medication comes from - it is produced and imported from Bavaria apparently. That's me fucked if we run out...

Quietrebel · 29/07/2018 15:37

bellini I think there is very limited appetite for practical tips and reasonable analysis of facts on here at the moment. Let's hope the quality of the debate improves soon. I for one am up for it (with strict old fashioned politeness that is)- but perhaps that's too boring for an internet forum...

bellinisurge · 29/07/2018 15:39

I have an AMA on being a prepper that I started a few weeks ago. Offer still stands.

None of your business Blitheringidiots. Nice supportive post there

P3onyPenny · 29/07/2018 15:47

I'd worry more about jobs than food distribution. We're losing so much. Science,finance,technology..... and it's only just begun.

The difference between previous crisis are that this time we are so very alone. Nobody elsewhere really gives a shit about little old UK. Europe wants and will get all our finance bases. We make zilch in comparison to the rest of the world. USA really don't give a shit about us,we are tiny. Interested to know how farmers will keep going without EU subsides and as for areas like Cornwall that also relied on a lot of EU money....it,s scary.

I'm not worried so much about food but having jobs at all, seriously worried. The rich who will benefit from Brexit will ensure there are no distribution problems. Many of us( ironically probably many who voted for it in the first place)just won't be able to afford it.Not going to prep though just going to drown my worries in Prosseco whilst I can afford it.As for the "just eat cheddar and oats"comment seriously! Grin

dementedma · 29/07/2018 15:51

i dont want to add to the fear factor, but those saying the "army" will help out. For the first time since the Napoleonic wars, Britain no longer has enough serving soldiers to qualify to be called an army. Defence cuts have taken their toll. We are ill equipped to defend the UK should we come under attack, never mind deal with massive public disorder.
We have aircraft carriers without enough crew and will rely heavily on our Reserve forces if anything kicks off.

AllIHaveToDo · 29/07/2018 15:52

Ah the Tories and their Austerity measures. The gift that keeps on giving...

bellinisurge · 29/07/2018 15:54

@dementedma , as a prepper, I rely on my own capacity to keep the family fed. I encourage other people to look at short term options for themselves too so the emergency services can focus on people who really need it.
Don't have to "become a prepper "to do this.

AllIHaveToDo · 29/07/2018 15:54

I do hope that when everyone is fucked over by Brexit, all the brexiteers who are so vocal on here and elsewhere still have the same brass balls to stand up and declare that they voted Leave.

I bet they won't admit it publicly though.

rainbowsandsmiles · 29/07/2018 15:58

THEY BECOME EXPENSIVE? Well, I'm going to make like BArbara from the Good Life. Grow me own spuds (in the ground that hasn't got tins of beans buried in it, that is.) Maybe start browning my legs with gravy instead of buying tights too.

rainbowsandsmiles · 29/07/2018 16:00

AllIhaveto - not everyone taking the piss voted Leave, as much as you would love to believe so. You have no idea whether "it'll be fucked" so stop dramatising and presenting it as fact.

Justanotherlurker · 29/07/2018 16:00

Europe wants and will get all our finance bases.

People making blanket statements like this is not based on facts, its based on headlines and just as bad as brexiteers going on about more funding the NHS.

Quietrebel · 29/07/2018 16:01

Allihavetodo what I really hope is that they and all decent people out there would pull together and help in a difficult situation (ie volunteering, for those who are able to)

Quietrebel · 29/07/2018 16:03

But let's hope nothing dramatic will happen. It can still be turned around.

P3onyPenny · 29/07/2018 16:03

So we're not going to lose any? Right back at you. Is that a fact?

rainbowsandsmiles · 29/07/2018 16:04

P3ony - "we are so very alone." Sorry, what with the shortage panic and now this gem, I can't help reading that as "alone in a Godless Universe and out of Shake and Vac." Grin (Always room for a Red Dwarf quote somewhere in life Grin )

rinabean · 29/07/2018 16:04

OP if you do come back please don't be worried. The only likely scenarios are that everything will be okay, about 99.99% likely, the 0.01% chance that it won't be okay is the kind of disaster no amount of stockpiling will help with so it's not worth worrying about. Some people love it and love terrorising others with it, they love their fantasies of being the last one standing in a horrible world, it's funny to them, they actually want it to happen. Don't pay them any attention.

You should stockpile a little bit in case of illness, snow, floods, broken car, cancelled bus. Not for this bullshit.

bellinisurge · 29/07/2018 16:05

Hate to tell you @Quietrebel that while I am happy to point people in the right sensible direction now, I will not be helping or volunteering if things get tricky.
For me, it's my immediate family and my dh's parents. That's the extent of my interest in helping people.

AllIHaveToDo · 29/07/2018 16:06

Rainbow - well if it does end up a total shit show the point still stands. I hope Leavers can love with themselves and at least have the nerve to own their actions.

And I didn't say it was just leavers 'taking the piss' in fact I mentioned no one taking the piss. I just said as I said above - I hope they fucking well own it!

ParsnipsAreTheDevil · 29/07/2018 16:09

Europe wants and will get all our finance bases

Has that been confirmed or is that your opinion?

My H works in asset management and his company are not unduly worried. Most of their clients are UK based or are not in EU countries.

Quietrebel · 29/07/2018 16:11

I hear you @bellini ... which is why the amount of animosity on here worries me almost more than the actual issues, because we might well need some solidarity.

ParsnipsAreTheDevil · 29/07/2018 16:13
