To feel terrified after reading the prepping for Brexit threads?

LittleNapRefuser · 28/07/2018 20:26

I have genuinely cried real tears of fear after reading the threads on prepping for Brexit today. I have a toddler and right now I am terrified of what is to come and their future after all this.

I don't really have anyone to talk to about this in 'real life' because most people I know aren't reading the news or don't seem to care.

Should I be terrified? Should I be scared for my baby's future? Can anyone reassure me or offer me an alternative perspective on all this. I don't want to to put my head in the sand but I feel really afraid.

I've never known the UK to be in such a state
Well you must be too young to remember the 3 day week, then there was the bse cattle cull/ millennium bug scare and crash of 2008 And the many British soldiers lost over the last decades.
The U.K. isn’t in a state. Some people are in a state but that is up to them.

frogface69 · 28/07/2018 20:55

Remember. On fb it was saying that supermarkets shelves are as good as empty in some places.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 28/07/2018 20:57

Giles Coren got it right. “Wrinklies have well and truly stitched us up”

borntobequiet · 28/07/2018 21:00

For the umpteenth time - the millennium bug was not in the end a problem because very many skilled people worked for years to safeguard against it, at considerable cost. It was a problem that arose partly because of technological limitations and partly inadvertently through lack of foresight. It bears absolutely no resemblance to the wilful self inflicted potential disaster that is Brexit.

HollowTalk · 28/07/2018 21:00

Of course I remember the 3 day week and I remember it ending, too. Don't patronise me - the country's in a real mess and we don't have one person in government with any vision.

WhoAteAllthePercyPigs · 28/07/2018 21:01

I'm worried too. I know that the human race has lived through worse...but I'm almost 40 and this is the biggest crisis that's ever presented a direct threat to my standard of living. I have a toddler and a baby and am more worried for them than me. I don't want to panic and stockpile - my grandmother did that during the Cuban crisis and after she died we were still unearthing ancient packs of sugar and tinned fish! But then again...I don't want to be in the position of not being able to feed my family! There doesn't seem to be an answer, so like a PP, I'll wait till autumn and see how the land lies before starting to slowly stockpile. What else can we do??

I'm so angry though. Angry at the people who voted to leave. Angry at the government for making such a balls up of it. Angry that my way of life is going to change thanks to something I wanted no part in, because some racists/ignorant folk who refused to educate themselves on the facts voted for this.

pinook · 28/07/2018 21:02

Yes, the 3 day week, as our economy was in turmoil. We joined the European Common Market at that time and the year we voted to leave the EU we were the 5th largest economy in the world. What on earth did the EU do for us...

Sorry going off topic but this Brexit farce makes me so mad...

Cleaningthefours · 28/07/2018 21:02

MN had to create an ebola topic a couple of years ago because of the histrionics and terror.

Don't worry too much about what some MNetters are saying.

dementedma · 28/07/2018 21:03

there is a ridiculous amount of scaremongering going on. Please dont be terrified and let this rule your life. i voted remain and hate the idea of Brexit but Brexit doesn't necessarilu equal Armageddon!

By all means, buy in a few extra bits and pieces - thing s that will be useful in power cuts, bad weather etc. but stop being hysterical about it

eightfacesofthemoon · 28/07/2018 21:03

Preppers love prepping
They would prep if someone said it’s going to rain tomorrow.
We are one of the richest countries in the world
That ain’t going to change over night.

When decimalisation happened, there was rabbid fear, yes prices went up, but it eventually adjusted itself
We do not live in a third world country, crying over something like this is mad

Thedutchwife · 28/07/2018 21:04

I agree, it’s going to zombie apocalypse is on its way. Bulk buying toilet roll is the way forward

eightfacesofthemoon · 28/07/2018 21:06

@Thedutchwife
And couscous

frogface69 · 28/07/2018 21:06

Posted too soon...
But no mention of why . I wonder if there is some scaremongering going on.
In any case, folks with money will do better. Poor will scrabble and make do. No change there, then.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 28/07/2018 21:06

I’m throwing it out there now and I’ll probably have to change my username but ultimately anybody who voted out is a fucking idiot. We are fucking facing all sorts of crap because stupid bloody pillocks were fed Shite by shite
Any answers anyone?

Seniorschoolmum · 28/07/2018 21:08

Op, what exactly are you scared of?

Unless you have daily need of a European-sourced medicine only available from one place, I’m not sure what you are imagining.

If we leave & go to wto rules, we can source all the same things that we can now, but prices may rise by 3-5% in the short to medium term.
Electricity is generated in the UK, gas can come from Ukraine, water and sewage are managed locally.
Unless your budget is very tight, I’m honestly not sure what you are worried about.
I’m a single mum and money is tight but I’ll cope and provide for dc. Please don’t get upset or panicked.

Clairetree1 · 28/07/2018 21:09

I think there is a possibility of a break down in civil order in the short term.

I also think there is a possibility of far greater long term problems, reaching down into decades, even a century or more.

We could well be more or less finished as a country

UglyCathKidstonBag · 28/07/2018 21:11

It is quite bizarre to me that we live in a world where we can continue to harp on saying “people survived WW2, don’t you dare moan”. Not to take anything away from the people who survived the blitz and WW2 because they showed remarkable resilience but the world has moved on a lot. Just because something terrible happened years ago, it does not mean we should never, ever be upset or scared of our current and upcoming situations.

There are many more people on this rock in the sea in 2018 than in 1939, we import more food, we import more medicines, people work in jobs reliant on the EU.

There may be long term supply issues, there may not but one thing that will happen is prices will go up and the likelihood of short term (3-4 weeks) even with a deal is very high according to every article I have read.

Bombardier25966 · 28/07/2018 21:11

I can understand the worry because it will be those most vulnerable that are most affected. If you've a healthy disposible income then you'll be fine, your costs may well be higher but you'll be able to cover them. If you're on a low or fixed income then any increase in prices of food, utilities could be the tipping point between getting by and not being able to feed and clothe your children.

When we talk about the economy we look at factors that have little relevance to most of us. We should measure a country's success by the living standards of everyone, and with the numbers of people relying on food banks spiralling, things do not bode well for the future.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 28/07/2018 21:12

We are fucked. And anyone who is still bleating on about migrants etc needs to seriously read a fucking newspaper

Quietrebel · 28/07/2018 21:15

uglycathkidstonbag what's even more bizarre is that this could be stopped. No one is forcing it on the UK.

UglyCathKidstonBag · 28/07/2018 21:17

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/jul/28/brexit-stockpiling-food-fear-government-feed

Also “does anyone remember the millennium bug”? Yep! I do and so will the thousands of people who worked tirelessly for years to prevent it happening. Who is working for years to prevent this being a disaster? It sure as hell isn’t the government nor the WE HEART THE BRITISH EMPIRE squad.

Bombardier25966 · 28/07/2018 21:18

Unless you have daily need of a European-sourced medicine only available from one place, I’m not sure what you are imagining.

My medications come from the EU. The cost of the same medications in the US is three times more than it is here, there's no way I could afford them and the NHS will withdraw them as no longer cost effective (it would be c. £750 a month, they're already expensive and only available from a consultant).

Perhaps you're ok with that because it doesn't affect you, or you've not done your research?

Bombardier25966 · 28/07/2018 21:19

We are fucked. And anyone who is still bleating on about migrants etc needs to seriously read a fucking newspaper

Even the Daily Mail are starting to panic. Amidst the usual xenophobic vitriol.

BrownJenkins · 28/07/2018 21:21

So what, exactly, do you rely on the EU for?
I'm genuinely interested btw.

pinook · 28/07/2018 21:22

As someone sick and disabled, I am very worried about our welfare state. It has already taken a hammering since austerity and I have read if we leave with no deal the only way to survive and encourage investment is to become a low tax economy. The welfare state will shrink even further.
