After seeing a landscape scene that I liked, I asked my bil who is an artist, (who was with me at the time), if he would do me a painting inspired by it.

His work is abstract, he's only sold some items through art fairs but he is very talented imo & luckily I totally love the painting he's made us.

However, I said 'great, send us the bill' & later dh said similar, and bil said 'just assess it & send what you think it's worth', or similar.

Neither of us know what to do, dh says whatever we send, he'll be insulted! Grin

What would you do & how much?

I think £500

Anxious2niteaaah · 26/07/2018 23:43

Op i wouldn't spend a chunk of my savings on that just to risk not offending bill

It just looks like he swirled paint around..
The poster who said it looks like lasagna is spot on..

Op don't waste £500 on it..it's not to my taste,

Anxious2niteaaah · 26/07/2018 23:44

*BIL...not bill Hmm autocorrect

Xmasbaby11 · 26/07/2018 23:45

£500 I'd say.

So I just seen brown until I turned it 90 degrees to the left (as it should be)
Now I see a MerMan happy to be stuck in the mud.

Oh dear.

I’m glad you like it because that’s all that really matters.

buckeejit · 26/07/2018 23:49

Thanks-will discuss with dh & agree-will maybe have to deduct framing off the total if we're to decide the price but will try to get a price off him first! & be as generous as possible, it does mean a lot to me & don't want ill feeling as We love him a lot. Will update if there's any subsequent drama! Thanks for the help!

Has anyone seen the episode of One Foot In The Grave where Victor gives Patrick a sheet of bird poo splattered plywood for his birthday, thinking it's a valuable work of abstract art? Grin

Not that I think your painting looks like bird poo OP. I love abstract art. It just came to mind when reading some of the responses on here Grin

My friend's husband painted this. He's a professional artist but only just getting by. I paid £200 for it.

It is awful imho. Drab and pointless. Can see no talent in it whatsoever. But it us a matter of personal taste. You couldn't give it to me never mind ask me to pay what I thought it was worth.

InsomniacAnonymous · 27/07/2018 00:22

The colours make it look as though it's a lot of body fluids. I have an abstract painting, but I don't like this at all. Sorry.

TheBlessedCheesemaker · 27/07/2018 00:24

I have a number of large resin abstract pieces (I am a sucker for them - and for Shona sculptures, and for Paolozzi)
I would expect something like that (given size) to be selling for around 1,500 in a gallery and maybe half that in a craft fair.

Monday55 · 27/07/2018 00:28

Sorry but the painting Is awfu, no abstract to it at all. I'd pay £50 for him to keep..and that's me being generous.

ConciseandNice · 27/07/2018 00:32

£500

Ivebeenthinking · 27/07/2018 00:40

Sorry, but I think it's horrific. If I opened the package and saw that I would return it in a flash

DCITennison · 27/07/2018 00:40

@Ellenjanethickerknickers I love that!
Does he have an online gallery at all?

notapizzaeater · 27/07/2018 00:47

Love the tree picture 😀

Zoomzoomzoomzoom0 · 27/07/2018 00:48

Art is so totally subjective really isn't it? That's sort of the point. I quite like the painting. I'm definitely leaning more towards a lasagne - esque interpretation. I think it's like a Rorschach test. If you see a pleasant landscape you pass.If you see lasagne, you have food issues... If you see a masturbating chimpanzee? Well, that speaks for itself!! (I am starving BTW....)

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 27/07/2018 00:50

Sorry, he's based in Mexico, was just over here for a few months. Most of his paintings are more tropical.

Zoomzoomzoomzoom0 · 27/07/2018 00:51

The more I stare at it the more I like it. It's very relaxing in a liquid / molten sort of way.....

LucyFox · 27/07/2018 00:53

Probably £150. - assuming that’s comparable with other sales though it sounds big so maybe £200?

madhattermum · 27/07/2018 00:55

Wtf lol. That painting looks like a landscape?? Unless I am missing something. Are we talking about the landscape on Saturn or Mars? Because then I am on the same page as those talking nonsense prices of £200 +

Rollupandride · 27/07/2018 00:57

£500 easy

LMDC · 27/07/2018 01:05

OP has posted asking what people think SHE should pay, given the facts (including the fact she likes it). She has not asked for any opinions so I fail to understand why so many people are telling her they don't like it/it's not to their taste/they wouldn't want to pay much/at all. Not helpful?

OP I think it's wonderful you have such a special piece, and would definitely try to find out what he would like for it and/or what has been paid for his previous work.

Rollupandride · 27/07/2018 01:09

You don't cost a piece of art based on whether it's your taste.

You might not be a fan of the Mona Lisa but that doesn't make it cheapHmm
