To ask how much you'd pay for this painting?

After seeing a landscape scene that I liked, I asked my bil who is an artist, (who was with me at the time), if he would do me a painting inspired by it.

His work is abstract, he's only sold some items through art fairs but he is very talented imo & luckily I totally love the painting he's made us.

However, I said 'great, send us the bill' & later dh said similar, and bil said 'just assess it & send what you think it's worth', or similar.

Neither of us know what to do, dh says whatever we send, he'll be insulted! Grin

What would you do & how much?

Hi Hattie. I agree with Ajas. I’m definitely not established so say emerging as I only started to sell 3 years ago after posting my work on Instagram. I think I will be emerging forever but I’m ok with that 😊

Barefoot, I don't have an artistic bone in my body and I wish I did.

Emerging? Established? Im impressed either way. You can paint and that in itself its something great Smile

@Ellenjanethickerknickers think that's beautiful..
@buckeejit also think the painting you've put up here is fascinating. I'd probably pay £350 for it (if I had that spare!).

Art is so personal. I'm not into all art at all, one person's Tracy Emin is another's Gainsborough, and thank God we're all so different!!

Surely you get to decide how much you would pay, it's him to make decisions whether the deal is done. Some would pay thousands, some wouldn't even want to pay a penny. This is art for you.

I think anything below £500 is rude. Have you asked how many hours it took? Then buying the materials etc adds to his costs. I don't think you should be paying gallery prices, but it would have taken a lot of time.

Plsbemyturn · 28/07/2018 11:19

Didn't realised this is "order to make". You definitely need to cover all the material cost and hours spent on it. Have you not got a price from him?

Gottagetmoving · 28/07/2018 11:49

It doesn't inspire me to ever want to visit wherever that 'landscape' is. Hmm
It's interesting that people's tastes differ so much. I wouldn't pay anything for that but if you love it you should pay whatever you feel its worth to you. If he gave you a price you would know whether it's worth that to you so just go with what you can afford.

Thanks for all the feedback.

Finally home & off to the framers with it on Monday. I don't know exactly how many hours he spent, or how much his studio costs etc. Will try to push him to state a price to help things along. Fairly confident that we won't end up in a family feud & he has no website as yet but will update if he does! 😃
