To ask how much you'd pay for this painting?

After seeing a landscape scene that I liked, I asked my bil who is an artist, (who was with me at the time), if he would do me a painting inspired by it.

His work is abstract, he's only sold some items through art fairs but he is very talented imo & luckily I totally love the painting he's made us.

However, I said 'great, send us the bill' & later dh said similar, and bil said 'just assess it & send what you think it's worth', or similar.

Neither of us know what to do, dh says whatever we send, he'll be insulted! Grin

What would you do & how much?

My dad paints landscapes in acrylic and they can sell for around £400. I would expect this to go for more because it is made in resin.
It's very good- he is clearly talented! I love abstract art.

trojanpony · 26/07/2018 22:43

Honestly at 2.5 feet x 4 feet I’d expect to pay around £400-500

SubtitlesOn · 26/07/2018 22:43

Please could you do a link to the original landscape that inspired it?

Coco2891 · 26/07/2018 22:43

Whoever mentioned copyright or something. , there's no harm being inspired by paintings and other artists. It wasn't a straight copy

StarUtopia · 26/07/2018 22:43

I would be insulted at £100!

Minimum £250. That's what you'd pay a decorator day rate round here.

I would be thinking more like £500 (and I say that as someone skint!)

SubtitlesOn · 26/07/2018 22:45

I asked about the original just cos I wanted to compare the two pictures

BewareOfDragons · 26/07/2018 22:45

Can't see it. boo.

rushhourtraffic · 26/07/2018 22:47

I absolutely love it. I would pay £500 for that (but would tell my dh it was half that and use my birthday to pay the other half) and still think it's an amazing deal. You are ever so lucky op to have a bil so talented. Enjoy.

Coco2891 · 26/07/2018 22:47

Yeah I'd like to see the original too

TheSpottedZebra · 26/07/2018 22:47

Is it a magic eye picture?

(I can't see it)

Zintox · 26/07/2018 22:47

I commissioned a watercolour smaller than that and paid £250. I can't see the pic but I'd say at least £500.

LemonysSnicket · 26/07/2018 22:49

£120

Someoneelsee · 26/07/2018 22:49

I want to seeeeee

LemonysSnicket · 26/07/2018 22:49

£350 from an adult artist

arethereanyleftatall · 26/07/2018 22:50

Looks like a splodge to me.
But I don't 'get' art like this.

kimber83 · 26/07/2018 22:51

for starters, this was work you commissioned

so you need to ensure it covers materials and his time from a basic obligation stand point

then add on top what you think it's worth from a creative POV.

i see a lot of posters on here whose creative talents aren't appreciated, but worse than that - the basic business costs involved in producing their work isn't even understood! (e.g. special occasion, intricately designed and delicately handmade cakes selling for less than it would cost to produce the most basic cake on a commercial basis).

this isn't any help with pricing it, but more of a point about posters pulling numbers out of thin air about what they think it would be worth - does it take into account the canvas, oils, paint, whatever was used? A chunk above THAT is the absolute bare minimum you could offer, surely.

EmmaSwann · 26/07/2018 22:52

Sorry I think it looks like my plate after I've eaten a lasagne!

arethereanyleftatall · 26/07/2018 22:52

Surely if you just pour some brown, orange and dark green paint on a canvas and swirl it around a bit, people would 'see' stuff in it? I acknowledge I don't have a clue btw.

speakout · 26/07/2018 22:53

Where is the pic?

LeighaJ · 26/07/2018 22:53

Can someone take a screenshot, I can't see it either.

HollowTalk · 26/07/2018 22:53

Has the pic been withdrawn?

GravyMilkshake · 26/07/2018 22:54

Want to see!!!

speakout · 26/07/2018 22:54

OOO pic please

4cheekymonkeys · 26/07/2018 22:54

Tried to post picture again for those who can't see it. Hope it works 🤞

To ask how much you'd pay for this painting?
MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 26/07/2018 22:54

I can't see it either - unless it's 'Polar bear in a snowstorm'? Hmm
